Most N.O. property records can be salvaged
http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_Times-Picayune/archives/2005_09_12.html#079128

5 p.m., Monday

By Greg Thomas
Real Estate writer

Most of the property records in the basement of Orleans Parish Civil District Court are salvageable from flood waters and may be ready to use within the next few weeks, Custodian of Notorial Records Stephen Bruno said Monday.

Stored in the courthouse basement, which took on nearly a foot of water during Hurricane Katrina, moisture was the biggest enemy to property records. Abstractors -- those who conduct the title searches that must take place before a real estate transaction closes -- should have access to them within the next few weeks, Bruno said.

The records include titles, mortgages, conveyances, liens, wills and other documents.

1. Do you believe this will hinder the NeoCon property grab?
I doubt it.

2. so what happened to the criminal records from the local hoosgow?
How could they have 1,000 prisoners, unidentified and unidentifiable?

did no one consider the possibility of burning a disk or e-mailing the records to a remote location BEFORE the storm?

3. Oh that's fantastic because I was worried about those people
that they left in town being able to get paid properly for their property once, you know they became "evacuees" and were given "evacuee status."

4. Re. Eminent Domain...can any legal minds help us out here?
Could this prevent the Bush bastards from seizing these properties under the Eminent Domain ruling?

Could the fact that the NOLA Custodian of Notorial Records are managing to salvage these property records, could this mean that the Louisiana State government in Baton Rouge could do the Eminent Domain thing instead? I'd trust Baton Rouge to do the right thing by the displaced folks from the Crescent City. It's of paramount importance that the Bush bastards be prevented from screwing NOLA over, like they will given the chance.

So, to cut a long story short. Does the fact that the property records can be salvaged mean that Governor Blanco and her people can take charge of those NOLA properties?

5. Well . . .
the recent SCOTUS decision means the gov't (federal or state) can take private property for pretty much any reason, absent legislation prohibiting such taking. I don't know if Louisiana has enacted such legislation, but I expect there will be pressure to do so, and I expect there will be pressure on Congress to enact legislation at the Federal level.

The records are important, however, because in the event property is taken by E.D., there will at least be no question who needs to get paid for the taking.
