Poll question: How long have you been a registered Democrat?
I've been one since '96, when I was old enough to register. I'm in the 6-10 year range.

7. Since 1988
I hadn't voted before, simply because I didn't know or care enough to. I saw the major patyies as mild deviations of each other, and the minor parties as ineffectual at best.

Once I started paying attention, I registered Democrat, and nothing I've seen since then has made me regret it.

Although I have mostly voted Democrat since 1988, I've never registered as a Democrat. It's not required in my state and, to be honest, sometimes I vote in Republican primaries to vote AGAINST some of the idiots the Repubs seem to always put up.

27. I can't blame you there...
Hobson's choice: You can have a political party of any stripe but "honest." Including MOST Dems. There are some notable exceptions to this rule. Dr. Dean comes to mind, as does RCB. And then you got your Conyers, of course. But as for the rest of the prominent Dems, fuck 'em. What the hell good have they done for America lately?

Capitulated and acquiesced to the rape of our Republic? Ooh, how about letting Republicans destroy the transparency and legitimacy of the electoral process? And then there's the ever-popular, "Letting the Right define the terms of political discussion for the last decade, and not serving as a vigorous opposition?" I could go on and on, but the longer I rant, the more people I'll piss off, so I'll shut up now.

You can call me MojoXN.

always an independent, never voted a straight party ticket in my life..but in 2000 registered Dem so I could vote for Bill Bradley in the primaries, went back to independent, but been Dem again since 2002. If the progressive elements in our party don't eventually win out and build a solid platform, might just vote w/ my heart, and go socialist all the way.

26. I've been a democrat all my life :)
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 08:04 PM by soliddemocrat
Hello Everyone, Even before i was too old to vote i've been a democrat all my life. But when politics did sink into my life and i learned about the liberal left wing party and the messed up republican right wing party i've taken to the liberty of always voting democratic. Though i will confess i have a hard time voting on a solid democratic ticket whenever i vote in the primaries but i do vote for John Kerry :). So i've been rooting for democracy all my life and my Grandma Gumina (pronounced guh-mean-uh)is a solid democrat as well and she voted for Kerry as well and i like to inform her on the latest things that are going on as of late whenever i see her up north in Shelby,Michigan on their property. I'm a very down to earth guy aside from a few brash breakouts on the boards because sometimes i'm just shocked at what happens on here. But other than that i'd do anything for liberty and justice to get the ball rolling again in the next election. I know it's another 3 years down the road but i'm hoping that by then the votes won't get hacked. And i'll be sure to do everything i can to prevent the votes from getting hacked. I hope to hear from you soon, good luck in all you do.

Signed,
Greg

where's the dem party representation of the people? where is the outrage about bushole suspending the davis-bacon act? john kerry? i worked my ass off him and he quits and leaves it up to the 3rd parties to file lawsuits about the ohio vote count. it wasn't easy leaving the democratic party. i volunteered my time for mcgovern in '72 before i was voting age, but it was the democratic party that abandoned me, not the other way around. did you know that the environment isn't even part of the dem party platform? WTF is up with that?

My first election as a registered Democrat was for Pres. Kennedy in 1960. Got to see him "up close and personal" when he visited our state twice!! God !!, it seems like yesterday!! I had just turned 18! I worked for my dad who ran for State Rep. in my early teens. He candidated on a shoestring! "Me", going door to door, giving out flyers in our small town. I guess you could say I was born a Dem.! Dad was STRONG on unions. For a kid I got to meet many exciting people. Like Adlai Stevenson, Chris Dodds' dad Tom Dodd, Senator Benson, and the Gov. of CT. at the time, Chester Bowles. Wow, what a blast from the past!

They did registrations at our High School (1989) in your senior year. So, I was 17 when I registered and then received my voter registration card on my 18th birthday. I was a Democrat that day and stayed one ever since.

As a side note, my dad came to this country in 1961. When he finally became a citizen in 1965, he was a registered Democrat. He has never changed it since then and I am proud to say that.

And it's not that I didn't explore other possibilities along the way. I have voted for Greens, Independents and so on, although I can proudly say I've never voted for a single Republican in my life. Even when the choices weren't that great, it always came down to the fact that Republicans are basically against the everyday working people in favor of their corporate sponsors. What's a girl to do?

I don't know how other younger people felt when they turned 18, but I was excited to be able to vote. To me, it was my first step toward becoming an adult. I graduated High School in 1976 and was able to vote in my first big election that year--for the Presidency.

63. Voted for the first time on my 18th birthday for George McGovern
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 08:14 AM by Douglas Carpenter
I suppose I registered when I was still only 17 about three months before that.

I always think about how the Republicans lost in a humilating defeat in 64 -- but that was the birth of the modern American rightwing.

We never hear the Republicans saying that we can't win with a REAL conservative because Goldwater lost so badly in 64

From secrecy, and deception in high places, come home, America.
From a conflict in Indochina which maims our ideals as well as our soldiers, come home, America.
From military spending so wasteful that it weakens our nation, come home, America.
From the entrenchment of special privilege and tax favoritism-
From the waste of idle hands to the joy of useful labor-
From the prejudice of race and sex-
From the loneliness of the aging poor and the despair of the neglected sick, come home, America.
Come home to the affirmation that we have a dream.
Come home to the conviction that we can move our country forward.
Come home to the belief that we can seek a newer world.
...
This is the time."

64. Since '65. But, I consider the Dem Party the lesser of two evils.
As an Anarchist/Socialist I've always considered the DP a vehicle to slow the progress of this country becoming what it has become. An oligarchy with a facade of democracy.

My nose has been worn out voting for politicians posing as progressives while being slaves to the bosses.

I've voted for 2 candidates for president that I actually supported (McGovern and Dukakis)rather than as "not as bad".

I've finally had it with the politics as usual that keeps this country in the hands of the plutocrats. I'll be voting Green in '06.

My maternal grandmother, who told me "our family doesn't vote for Republicans. They're for the rich."

Richard Nixon (no explanation necessary), and

Jack Herrity, a former Board of Supervisors Chairman (Republican), who just destroyed Fairfax County, Virginia, through his too-chummy relationships with developers.

Enough said.

68. Proudly voted for "Acid, Abortion and Amnesty" in 1972
and voted Democrat ever since. Only time I can ever remember doing otherwise was the election in the 1980s when that scumbag Ed Koch ran for NYC mayor as a Republican, a Conservative, a Liberal and a Democrat.

Off & on for maybe 3-4 years
I initially registered as a Democrat when first registering at 18... then I stopped a few years later because I didn't like the annoying GOTV phone calls... I changed to independent. Last year, after we moved, I registered as a Democrat in my new town.
