DU stands on its own. I found it in 2002. Anybody remember that year? Bush: Get Saddam. Tax cuts for the rich. Get Saddam. Tax cuts for the rich. You get the picture. Osama bin who? I was disgusted. I am bald now from tearing my hair out for reading the rah rah Washington Post in 2002 (okay, genetics, too). I found DU, thank God, and the folks here who knew it was all a lie. As it remains.

4. Hi, GreenPartyVoter! As I stated in another thread, I found DU...

while trying to find information about Glenn Beck after he discussed killing Michael Moore on the air. I was so enraged that I decided to try to find information about him and to contact his advertisers to complain. (By the way, DirecTV actually stopped advertising with him because of this stunt.) During my search, I found DU -- I found my home! I have Glenn Beck to thank for this! I've never listened to his show (I had just heard about the incident from some progressive site), but he's why I'm here. Isn't it ironic?

I read all the archives of the hate mailbag before I ever even came into the forums. I had no idea about discussion boards or anything. I think it was 'toons on the front page that sucked me in first, then during the debates last year I started posting like crazy.

12. I was in denial for a few years

Now don't get me wrong, I've always been a liberal. But Limpballs and Hannmity got me thinking, these guys aren't bad, they have a point.

Then I heard about Bartcop. Now, Bartcop isn't exactly your 'deep thinking man's' website, but it had an immediate impression.

From there, the links, and further explorations (Buzzflash, Conason, Krugman, etc.) made me the man I am today.

Although I'm from another country, I believe that stopping fascism at it's source is vital before it spreads. I see the echoes of it today, in my country.

So, keep on truckin', DU, may you always be the light at the end of the deep, dark tunnel.

13. Yes - I trolled RW Sites for a while

I posted on a Bigot's site. This guy is an Adjunct with the Free Congress Foundation. When I noted the connections between the FCF and Nazis, I immediately got banned.

While I was there, this guy kept mentioning 'Democratic Underground'.

After I was banned, I said to myself "This 'Democratic Underground' seems pretty cool", I joined a couple days later.

14. google saved my sanity

after the rwers on my orchid forum made me doubt it. i still get into heated discussions there because of 3 or 4 diehard rwers. they make me nuts . . . you guys bring me back. they will NOT be persuaded.

i learned at 17 that you can't argue politics or religion but i just can't help myself nowadays. fortunately, except for my bosses (wealthy attorneys), my co-workers share my politics . . . mostly.

right after the 2000 thievery of the election, I was searching for info to counter some RW bullshit from a freeper on another board and I came across a link to DU. I've never left! This place has saved my sanity.

The first time I ran across DU was when I googled Cheney and Halliburton, and there were several excellent articles that I downloaded that were from DU. But I really found DU when a post debate poll DU link was included in an e-mail from either the DNC or Kerry HQ. I went to that link after voting in all of the other major polls that were listed in the original e-mail, and followed the Skinner Trail not knowing WHAT I was doing! But it was so well organized, and I honestly believed that I'd accomplished some small good, that I returned, and slowly found out about the layout, how to post (I was that ignorant), and the wonderful content of DU that has saved me from insanity! It was later when I downloaded other DU threads/articles that I discovered I had visited DU about 8 months prior to the post debate polls, when I had copied the articles on Halliburton and Dickface. I've been coming back ever since.

I've told this story a billion times on DU, but what the hell, I'll tell it again :). When I lived in Georgia I had been forced to listen to Bootzie while riding to work every day (I worked in the same place as my father, who worshipped him). At first I thought he was a pretty intelligent, reasonable guy, but it didn't take me long to notice the sophistry in some of his arguments. Eventually I would listen (or visit his site once I moved to TN) just to see if I could predict his reaction to a particular event.

Thus, my visit to his site when Reagan died; I figured it wouldn't be enough for him to pay his own respects, he'd have to show how the horrible liberals were crass and unfeeling and disrespectful (this from the self-proclaimed king of insensitivity). Sure enough, he had a couple of less-than-reverant quotes from some Democratic discussion board :7 on his site, and was using them exactly like a predicted he would. I figured "it's a discussion board--it's bound to have a few assholes. I'm gonna check it out for myself to see what it's really like." And that's exactly what I did. :kick:

So, in one fell swoop, I realized that Bootzie was a useless gas-bag and DU was a pretty cool place...and I've been addicted ever since.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
