I Can't Bear To Watch The Roberts Hearings! Dem Appeasement Run Amok!
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 07:56 AM by DistressedAmerican
The Dem's have been lining up to roll over and appoint this dedicated pro-lifer. If there is anything I find more disheartening than Bush screwing this country it is our own leadership's willingness to consent when Bush advises.

I called for a filibuster on Rice. I was told, "We need to hold off and save it for the SCOTUS nomination."

I called for a filibuster on Gonzalez and was told over and over, "We have to hold onto the filibuster for the SCOTUS nomination."

Now the SCOTUS nomination is here.

I said that we should filibuster Roberts for the Associate Justice position. I was told, "We have to save it for the replacement for Rehnquist."

Now, Roberts IS the replacement for Rehnquist. What do we see? People lining up to confirm the guy even in the absence of the documents that the Congress has demanded to clarify his positions.

What should we save the filibuster for now? Have we run out of excuses for not standing firm against this administration yet?

Is anyone else out there ready to use the filibuster again? Ever?

1. You have to talk to the "group of 14". Only they can decide.

3. Roberts is in like Flynt
He's going to sail through ... like a dove in blue skies... There doesn't seem to be enough meat there to pounce on.

5. Maybe If We INSISTED On Getting The Docs That We Asked For
before we just roll over and confirm him, we may find the missing meat. Right now they are keeping it in the deep freeze!

Of course if we do not stand up and stick to our guns on those docs, we will never see them. We will simply confirm a guy that we do not know...

18. Which really says a lot about the Bush and this guy
If he's going to be on the Surpreme Court he'll be making decisions that effect me, so I damn well want to see these documents. He shouldn't be voted on until those papers come out.

27. Yes but he is being voted on without the docs.
The hearings have begun. Who is stopping the process?

4. i've said the same things...
and was given the same answers.
some people don't want to throw a rock because it's too pretty and they might lose it...
the rest of us see that rock as our only weapon against a monster that is barreling down on us.

7. They Excercised "The Nuclear Option" Just By Threatening To Do So!
If we refuse to use it for fear of losing it, we have ALREADY lost it!

Sad...

6. Yep. Time to fight, and it ain't happening.
I am one of those who often posts that a certain battle would be a waste of resources. For example, I belittle all the "Impeach Now" threads, because that just isn't going to happen.

But the Roberts nomination is critical. Even if we loose, and at present it looks like we will, we have to put up the maximum fight here. If we don't, then W will feel free to reach even further right for the other vacancy. And given the age and health of two of our justices, he may get a chance to replace one, or even both, of them.

If he wins Roberts easily, then the next appointment will make Rush look moderate by comparison.

Sometime, even a losing battle has to be fought hard. This is one of them.

9. Politics as usual by the usual politicians.
Their idea of opposition is to throw up their hands and shake their heads sadly. Then, tell us that they're saving the fight for a more propitious time.

But, they'll inundate us with fundraising requests and more promises of fighting.

I don't think we have an opposition party anymore with the exception of few politicians.

11. Oh, Watch for the Intellect Gap
The contrast in quality of the two sides is striking. LEAHY, KENNEDY, FEINGOLD, KOHL, FEINSTEIN were breathtaking in their eloquence and highmindedness. (I realize that staff put things together to different extents.) Then there was the wingnut side---HATCH, GRASSLEY, CORNYN...petty, regressive, defensive. The Dems attempted to appeal to whatever shred of decency the A-hole might have, literally begging him to be decent. The Repukes only ordered him not to answer questions.

Gotta go to the store early to lay up supplies to get to the good part--the questioning--today. The last time I approached this level of interest was for the Watergate hearings, which I fit between classes at school. I only wish these were for Shrub.

12. I tend to agree with you, but news from Poppa Malta Blue
is that unfortunately Roberts is the best candidate we are going to get, and perhaps they are holding back on the fillibuster for the associate position that * is going to announce once Roberts is confirmed. The next appointee will be far more conservative in Poppa's opinion. I think he knows far more on this subject than I do, with his legal background, so I will have to defer my opinion to that.

Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 08:47 AM by DistressedAmerican
We have lost the filibuster. We do not even have it anymore.

You know I trust Poppa Blue's opinions on most things legal. But, where was he on filibustering the torture apologist Gonzalez? Or the others? Was he in favor of holding fire then as well?

I just do not understand not using the one tool in our arsenal. What do we have to lose? The filibuster that we never use?

15. Oh no, we was all for taking down Gonzalez. His opinion is
that Roe v Wade will not be overturned regardless of Roberts' position as a straight up pro-lifer. I am not too sure, but like I said, not being as well-versed in all things legal, I am going to hope he is right. (We actually had this conversation at dinner last night).

Sadly, this one is done deal. When they nominate the next guy, I expect Poppa to be standing beside me calling for a filibister!

20. Spector held up a big poster board with 30 something
times that Roe was called into question. Roberts didn't really answer completely, but the question was not asked straight up whether he would try to overturn or not.
Dog and pony show.
Leahy who was cheneyed is asking questions now.
