DU Group Proposal - Sexuality and Public Policy
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 09:05 AM by benburch
Based on polling data acquired recently here on DU; http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4729829 (I have this thread as a PDF if anybody needs a copy.)

I believe that there is sufficient interest to propose a DU Group, "Sexuality and Public Policy" to be categorized under Politics, Issues & Media.

With the Right of Privacy under attack in the attempts to repeal Roe v. Wade, and the constant drumbeat from the "religious right" to repress sexual freedoms, it becomes imperative that Liberals and Progressives unite to discuss these matters as they relate to proposed legislation, judicial nominees, and planks in the Democratic Platform.

I propose the following charter for this group;

"The Sexuality and Public Policy group exists to discuss the impact of public policy on the freedom of adult Americans to seek their Pursuit Of Happiness with other consenting adults."

I here solicit discussion of this group, and ask those who would support the creation of such a group sign here with a reply titled "I support the creation of this group."

Thank you!

(Please also keep this topic kicked.)

3. Sounds like a great idea
I have some good friends who would fall under the category of minority sexual groups (poly and kink), and I want to do what I can to keep them safe from the Religious Reich now controlling our government.

5. With the right to privacy on shaky ground, this is an important topic.

7. In so far as it's a discussion of public-policy it has my support.
Though why does it have to be about adult Americans only?

There are plenty of non-Americans around here, and there are plenty of countries which have severe restrictions on sexual behaviour - as well as others which have very few. Contrasting different cases would be a fascinating aspect of such a group.

9. Well, I was relating this to the charter of DU itself...
And as the Democratic Party is an American political institution, that is how I couched the language. Personally, I would welcome discussion of these matters from anywhere in the world where these human rights are suppressed.

The neoComstocks are feeling their oats, so we need to help plan the politics to counter them and preserve the gains of the last 40 years.
