the guy. We all know the fix is in. Move on. Nothing to see. Fact is, he may not be all that bad (Just My Completely Personal Opinion).

the fact that Bush appointed him and now is pushing him down everyone's throat as Chief does make me wonder what promises and backyard deals were mad in privacy, he becomes swarmy to me in that light.

5. I agree. No one is going to make a stand on Roberts, so why
waste the time and capital on something that almost all of the Dems are going to "go along" with anyway? At this point it is only a distraction...

sorry.. feeling very down about everything. this world is fucked up.

7. tips to get through hearings
Wonkette's Tips to Make John Roberts's Confirmation More Interesting
• Figure out which senators aren't wearing make-up.
• Go through box of crayons trying to approximate the exact shade of Roberts dreamy blue eyes.
• Turn off sound, do voice over giving senators funny voices or accents.
• Turn off sound, start "Dark Side of the Moon." Freaky, huh?
• Miniputt!
• Put ten glasses of water on your coffee table, one containing poison: close your eyes and re-arrange them. Every time Specter says, "let him finish," drink one.
• Translate the hearings for your cat ("And then the senator asked 'meow meow meeeow meow meoooow.'").
• Count your yawns per hour; now, can you double that the next hour?
• Assfuck -- while you still can.
• Prank call the committee members' offices, asking "Is your democracy running?"
• Watch them with a gerbil in your trousers.

So these shitheads can sit and talk about nothing for hour after hour after hour?

He does talk a good game.. but that is all he just talks. I want actions to back up your words Biden! Be the raving Liberal you come off as.

Instead of just criticizing. Biden and Kennedy did a great job hammering him with questions. At this point in time (the question period) what would you recommend, not question him?

The general sentiment is "just confirm him already". You complain about how the dems appease the repubs and then you want the dems to not ask questions?

35. I listened to him
Biden talks a good game, he's grandstanding. But at the end of the day he doesn't mean anything. He'll still vote him through. It's called principles, if you don't stand for something you stand for nothing.

Quite frankly, it's a fresh slap in the face every time he does it.

26. Yes I'm watching. I'm wondering on what grounds the Dems
that vote against him will vote against him - he's not really giving anything away. I suppose they can vote against him just on the basis of being a conservative and what that means.

Did you hear what he said about one of the justices he most admired who I think used to be Atty General?

30. I agree. Ain't nothing' going to change until we have...
1. Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least

2. Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% automatic recount, very strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

-------

Thereis bipartisan corruption in the new electronic voting boondoggle. Dem election officials signed contracts with Bush buds at Diebold and ES&S including "trade secret" vote tabulation code. Bad, bad. But the best hope for getting back our right to vote is these state/local venues where the power over election systems still resides, and where ordinary people still have potential influence.

Diebold and ES&S election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' NOW!

-------

The bad guys did this back in the 1920s. While they destroyed the U.S. ecomony (resulting in the Great Crash of '29), they put their dinosauric, robber baron appointees on the Supreme Court, and FDR had to struggle against them to get his New Deal program going, with half the country unemployed and starving.

But history does not repeat itself. It is a gyre--a spiral--on which certain themes keep recurring at somewhat predictable intervals, but with human beings always having the opportunity to see them differently, and to improve, change, grow and evolve. Perhaps out of this debacle will come an improved economic system that is produced not by bloody revolution (the old way) but, rather, peacefully, with a new recognition of the necessity for peace (war and bloodshed usually hurt the poor the most), and a new understanding of what is equitable and right, as has occurred in Venezuela, Europe, Scandinavia, Ireland, Canada, India, South Africa, South Korea, and other places.

Historical models such as the Roman Empire, the Third Reich and the Great Depression can teach us many lessons, but they cannot predict what we, some of whom know those lessons, will do, or how the creative human spirit, ever evolving, will meet new crises.

What we see dying may not be our democracy, but rather the wedding of our democracy with predatory capitalism, never a comfortable fit, in the best of times, and highly destructive now. Predatory capitalism is destroying its host (our democratic country). It is a parasite, and by no means essential to democracy. You can have capitalism without the predatory. And you can have healthy trade, business and individualism, without exploitation and a huge divide between rich and poor. And you can achieve this peacefully, provided that we are able to vote (and have our votes counted accurately in transparent elections).

Into 'Boston Harbor' NOW!

(We will deal with Judge Roberts later. If we restore our right to vote, while we still have time, we will be able to do many things, including invalidating the 2004 election and all its works!)
