"Roberts dodges specifics on abortion"
WASHINGTON - Supreme Court nominee John Roberts jousted with Democratic senators Tuesday at his confirmation hearing to be chief justice, dodging their attempts to pin down his opinions on abortion, voting rights and other legal issues.

Roberts said he felt the landmark 1973 ruling legalizing abortion was "settled as a precedent" and that the Constitution provides a right to privacy.

But when senators pressed for details on his opinions — even to the point of interrupting his answers — Roberts said repeatedly that he shouldn't address some issues that could come before the Supreme Court with him as chief justice.

At one point, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., who has indicated he may run for president in 2008, accused Roberts of "filibustering."

1. Abortion issue is a smokescreen
I think repubs use the threat of a Roe v Wade rollback to their advantage.

Our country's been lulled into a sense of false security for so long just by these kinds of "litmus" questions. In this particular case, the courts and activists have been successfully chipping away at the basic right to an abortion for years. Before you know it there'll only be one clinic in the entire US performing abortions, and only on the third Tuesday of only those months beginning with the letter J, and ONLY if the terror threat level is lower than orange. And THEN ONLY if the patient has 27 notarized consent forms, including one from their local Homeland Security Office, and one from their neighborhood mail carrier.

There's no way any sitting Supreme Court will ever flat out reverse Roe v Wade. It would mass mobilize far too many civil rights groups (from women to gays to people of color to God knows how many people) to a degree that would be overwhelming.

Sadly, the right has fostered this notion on us that as long as (insert a basic right) is legal, we're okay.

The left could only HOPE the Supremes would reverse Roe v Wade.
