Tempers flare between Houston, Louisiana students and their mothers
Security will be increased Wednesday at a southeast Houston high school where a fight broke Tuesday between Louisiana and Houston students.

"Man, they were just going at it," said Larry Citizen, a student. "Man, that's all it was -- Louisiana versus Jessie Jones."

When it was over, three Jones High School students were in the hospital and five were in police custody.

The scene got even uglier when parents arrived.

A loud verbal confrontation broke out between mothers of some of the students involved in the first fight.

"They jumped on my nephew inside this school, busted him in the head. They're sending him to the hospital," yelled one woman.

2. Quote from that article
"You have ladies that have been trying to get on welfare and food stamps, trying to get government assistance, housing. And then evacuees coming here and getting it instantly," said Lewis.

These people also lost their homes.

The article makes it appear as if the Houston kids are picking on the NOLA kids, and the Houston parents think it is justified?

Is this going to spread through the country?

4. How is it working out for them now BABS?
I hope it's not going to be like that in all the places that they are sending these people. Who knew brotherly love had a use by date?

7. Not that I think it is justified,
but I have been wondering how the disparity would affect people. I was thinking about my own hypocrisy today. I have been volunteering with our local evacuees, donating money, donating stuff, offering to put people up in my home. But we had plenty of homeless before. Why was I not as concerned about them? I am sure some of them would have preferred my guest room to the local shelter.

I have an idea. Let's completely eliminate extreme poverty and homelessness in this country. Then we won't have this kind of frustration anymore.

5. That my friends is the definition of GHETTO.
What those mothers were doing was totally unnecessary and quite embarassing. Sigh!

6. Sounds to me like they're loading already overloaded schools.
Why would I think it'd be any different? Did I think they'd actually send the poorest evacuees into Sugarland schools? Nawww.

8. Three things struck me:
The first fight started around 9 a.m. when a bus rolled up carrying Katrina evacuees enrolled at the school.

According to police, someone threw a can at one of the evacuees and that set off a fight involving several students.

So, kids who have lost everything are being picked on? I wonder if this is happening all over. What are the ids hearing at home that would make them target the NO kids?

Parents say tensions had been strained since the evacuees started school here last week.

"We need to go home. We need to go home because ya'll don't want us here anyway," said another evacuee.

Tell it to Babs, since you're better off now, lady. :eyes:

Extra police officers and a group of ministers will try to help keep the peace at the school beginning Wednesday.

Oh good. Bring the ministers into it. Let's make sure we can inject God as often as possible. I tell you, I'm a Christian and all, but I'll take my God at church and my education at school, thank you very much. Here we go...

9. I find the title of the clip rather offensive actually...
http://www.khou.com/perl/common/video/wmPlayer.pl?title=www.khou.com/wendell5_091305.wmv

while it's playing, and buffering, or whatever, it comes up as "catfight".

First of all - there's yelling and screaming, but not really much physical stuff during the clip. Seems to me, most of the physical stuff was between the boy students earlier. Anyway - it seemed kinda sexist and condescending to me. As a parent, I'm sure I would be yelling too if my kid was getting picked on and assaulted at a new school after such a horrendous experience.
