To anyone who is sick of Nagin being compared to Gigglyannie: |
|
Some people might tell you Gigglyannie handled the aftermath of 9/11 much better than Nagin but consider this: only a small part of New York was directly affected by the disaster. Fire stations and police departments were unaffected and able to respond immediately. The PD and FD in New Orleans were UNDER WATER. Electricity and phone lines were destroyed in NO. There was basically no communication possible. Kind of hard to direct the relief effort with no communication. Rudi was not handicapped by any of these things. Comparing these two disasters is comparing apples to bowling balls. This seems very obvious to me, but I have not seen anyone say this yet.

1. And 9-11 was over by noon. By noon the next day, Nagin was still |
|
trying to stop the catastrophe from getting worse, and that stretched on for a week. Nagin would have traded places with Guiliani without a moment's hesistation.
Oh yeah, and the feds responded a lot quicker on 9-11. Not quickly enough, but still a lot quicker.
And for the record, I'm not belittling Guiliani. He was a genuine leader and hero on the day America most needed one, even when our president had gone AWOL, again. I don't like much else about the man, but I respect him for that. Nagin never had the chance, though, to stand at the podium after the disaster and reassure the nation that things were all right. He had no podium, no electricity, no communications lines, and things were definitely NOT alright, and still are not alright.

9. And the WTC was practically within walking distance |
|
of some very effective rescue systems. Likewise, safe asylums were within walking distance to the survivors.
If Bush picks Guliani over far more qualified people, he'll be just sucking up to his core supporters. The rest of the nation, and the rest of the world, will take due note.

13. Not to mention that no one losts their homes in the WTC attacks |
|
The residents of New Orleans had to find shelter, food, water, dry land. The WTC survivors had to find a way back to their houses. And once in their houses, they had to find work, but mostly in the same city. In New Orleans, all jobs were lost.
Very different situations. On the other hand, Guiliani responded well that day, and while he's far from the most qualified to handle FEMA or Homeland Security, at least he proved he has the ability to handle the stress and not collapse into petty beauracratic excuses. He can get things done under catastrophic conditions. That would be a vast improvement over Brown or Chertoff. Or Bush. Not the best choice, but a better choice.
But I'd still rather see them get someone Albaugh drove away, or someone Gore put in charge. Instead of appointing Clinton to do fundraising, why not appoint Gore to fix FEMA and Homeland Security. Or better yet, fire Cheney, appoint Gore as VP, then force Bush to resign. Bingo, instant fix to every problem facing America now.
Excuse me, I have to go wake up from a fantasy...

2. Exactly. I've been thinking the same thing. |
|
Much less overall devastation in the 9/11 disaster; and a whole lot less homelessness.
Granted, many New Yorkers *should* have been homeless for a while, had Bush not forced the EPA to lie to them about the air quality.

African-American men have always made convenient targets. Mayors in other affected localities aren't being held responsible for people not leaving. The mayor of Biloxi, MS (Mike Longo?) said that there were about 30 families who couldn't/wouldn't leave. When the reporter asked what happened to them, Longo said that they're probably dead. There are lots of poor people who lived along the Gulf Coast who couldn't afford to leave and probably paid with their lives. Why is Naygin getting all the flack?

5. easy: New Orleans was the biggest disaster |

possibly a little off topic but I have to share, my uncle was saying that New Orleans tends to elect the "flashy" candidate and not the best qualified candidate and now they are paying for it. - this from a guy who plans on voting for the ex-Husker football coach for governor!

6. What a useless diversionary argument. So typical |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 11:37 PM by Strawman
One would think that Rudy would have required assistance from FEMA, the organization whose sole purpose is to manage massive emergencies like Katrina, and he would have been fucked just like Nagin. But that's useless speculation. We can entertain all sorts of counterfactuals, but the actual facts remain: FEMA fucked up royally. It was their job and they fucked it up and this bozo we call the President is an absolute fucking dipshit. There's no denying it. Period.

7. No comparison. Nagin's job was far, far more difficult. NO CONTEST. |
|
That is all such nonsense.... a totally different set of circumstances. Only freepers and the uninformed would compare the two.

St. Rudy was not a hero. HE DID HIS FUCKING JOB. That's ALL he did.
Ye Gods, ChimpCo. has lowered the bar for public officials so much, all they need to be considered heroes is show up for work and say something coherent.

10. No comparison in scope, duration, or numerous jurisdictions affected |
|
This is exactly WHY FEMA was necessary. Communications were down, there was no power, and things kept getting worse by the minute. Not to mention that nobody could DO anything with all the water, so even transportation was affected. This lies solely in the laps of the feds.

How many people lost their homes due to 9-11? Not many I'll wager.
