Imus just said "drinking the kool-aid".
In reference to J. Severin previously supporting the war. Is this a common phrase beyond DU?

1. It's actually a reference to cult mentality in general.
I.e. Jim Jomes and his poisoined Flavor-Aide.

2. Yes. It's been common since the Jim Jones incident.
Or, at least, I've heard it most all my life.

5. I tell ya what. I have only heard it outside of DU years ago by a
comedian. So I think when he used the phrase, it may be that he got it from paying a visit here. just my opinion.Of course I have no hard evidence to back this up.Just wishful thinking on my part I guess.:D

6. "Kool-Aid" itself was sort of a twist though
Since it was actually grape "Flavor-Aid" that was used in that horrific incident in Jonestown, Guyana

In popular culture -
The idiom drink the Kool-Aid, defined by Wordspy as "To become a firm believer in something; to accept an argument or philosophy wholeheartedly or blindly," is a product of the Jonestown massacre, despite the fact that the beverage consumed by the Jonestowners was not actually Kool-Aid.
.

As was mentioned it's a fairly commonly used idiom now.

9. So is Imus saying that it is wrong to be

against the war or right?

I ask the question because I know of nothing that Imus feels passion about except his tax deduction for his "Kid's Camp."

11. Not having the complete quote available, it's hard to say.

drinking the cool aid = brainwashed. Did Imus say the guy drunk the kool aid when he supported the war, or when he turned against the war?
