40. Or to New York, or Calfironia
If Roe v. Wade is gone, states will still be free to have their own abortion laws - the way it was before 1973.

Won't help, of course, poor people in the backwards states. But then, we really do not care about the poor, right?

(Actually this speech is from anti-choice Repuke women. They think legal abortions should be forbidden for everyone else, but "I really NEED an abortion." Amazing doublethink.)

4. They'll say that contraception is wrong.
I really don't believe that they'll stop at doing away with abortion rights. The people who support the "pro-life" movement are fanatics who will not rest until a woman has no other role in life but to have babies.

The way I hear it, young people who vow to remain virgins until they marry engage in oral sex as a substitute. That way, they can remain, technically, virgins. Am I way off course here?

15. Some republicans are pro-choice
Just like some Democrats believe abortion should be out lawed.

However, I thing there are more REpublicans who are for it, then Democrats that are against it.

Republican Pro-choice women don't think the right to chose would ever be taken away.

As soon as * gets the court packed, there will be a rush from the red states to get a test case before the court. It may take more than one to completely dismantle Roe, but it will come down. Any repug who is pro choice is delusional to think otherwise.

41. They are already doing so. Make no mistake where the issue is.
Here's Jill Stanek, a commentator at the Wingnut Daily, explaining that the fight against abortion really is a fight against contraception:

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=45948

Here's the money quote: "Restoring the culture of life involves restoring the culture of sexual morality. This involves discussing not only that prescription contraceptives and the IUD likely abort, but further that the contraceptive mentality, in general, is anti-life and has opened a Pandora's box of woes on America that stem from the sexual immorality it attracts."

This board doesn't have an emoticon of someone puking, so you'll just have to imagine my reaction to that.

Other states will not be as lucky.

An underground railway will start to bring women in no choice states to those with laws that allow abortions.

13. "Well, it was worth it to keep the majority...
gather up the clothes hangers girls."

The abortion 'debate' keeps a percentage of voters stirred up and loyal to the party so overturning Roe might not be a wise thing. Once that's done many would finally be able to base their votes on other issues without betraying their consciences.

are expensive. Doctors who perform them locally want a fortune, and going out-of-country is both expensive and time-consuming. Thank god we can afford it."

It's called hypocrisy.

...

And just so that it's clear, the (primary) arguments that we are being fed for not worrying about Roe are: first, that Roe will never be overturned (the pugs "need" it, etc); second, that if it is, then the issue would revert to the states (which, of course, would depend on the actual SC ruling).

There is a certain plausibility to these arguments (of course, if there wasn't, they probably wouldn't be used). And if those who make these arguments are willing to commit seppuku if they are proven wrong (and seem likely to be alive at the time), then I might be (grudgingly) willing to accept that Roe is not at risk... provided that skeptics (of these arguments) get to choose the seconds.

(I would want a very fast second myself.)

You have to remember that many people see abortion as murder -- and see it as their "religious" duty to end abortions (along with making America a theo-fascist state generally). A large of group of people who think this way are the core of the republican party (the controlling core in many places) -- and most other republicans (regardless of registration) just go along with whatever the party does.

And just because W or some other neocons fall into disgrace, this, of itself, won't necessarily change the dynamic.

21. They'll pay their doctors to write up the operation as a simple D&C
Didn't Dan Quayle one time blunder big time about that-he was asked what he would do if his teenaged daughter was raped and ended up pregnant, and he responded "I'd take her for a D&C". I don't know if he really said it or if it's just an urban legend thing.

Anyways, rich women will be able to get their doctors to write it up as something else. Poor women will go to illegal abortionists who will butcher them. There will be some states with legal abortion-CA, NY, Massachussetts probably. There is also Canada, although then you would get cases in which someone (like the impregnator of the woman, or her religious zealot parents) files an injunction against a woman to prevent her from leaving the state/country to get an abortion.

I don't think that the court will overturn Roe anytime soon. The american people overwhelmingly support the pro-choice side of the issue, although the "exceptions for rape and incest" crowd need to understand that there is no way to make legal exceptions for rape or incest without creating a legal mess. Who decides what is rape? What time frames are utilized in making that decision? It's by necessity an all or nothing situation.

49. Those who believe abortion is murder can't make exceptions.
Rape was probably the fault of the woman, anyway. Why should an innocent "baby" pay? As for incest--hey, that little tart made him do it!

The old "discreet D&C" is something I remember from the 60's. Abortion would still remain legal in some states, so those with money & time to spare will be OK.

24. Depends on the part of the country.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, it doesn't mean abortion becomes illegal in the United States, it simply means there is no federal protection.

Red state women will have to go to blue states to have abortions - it's that simple - because those states will enact anti-choice laws.

So, Republican anti-choicers simply will say, "Get me a ticket to New York."

35. True, but it depends on the make-up of their state
legislative body, too.

So, while only 13 states (sadly, my state included) have the majority of PEOPLE who are anti-choice, if the state legislature is 51 percent Republican fundie, well, it matters not what the people of the state think until it's too late.

28. Republican pro-choice women tend to be wealthier women
So they have the means to travel to blue states where abortion will remain legal, or if need be, to other countries.

So I suspect that they won't much mind, as long as they get to keep their Bush taxcuts.

And if they do mind, that's tough shit. They had their chance to vote the right way, and I have better things to do with my time.

Hell, the Busheviks may not even fully exposed what their Final Solution is until enough of us who were born in Old American Freedom, grow old and die.

Not enough of us are willing to become Soviets or Nazis yet.

But when the last generations who remember freedom are weak, old, or dead, THEN the poor bastards left alive, who were too young to understand what they had or what was lost, will be ready to accept the Final Solution.

Just a hunch, but I think it will be Emperor George P. Bush who brings it to them.

And maybe it is still possible. I just don't see it. How can the Busheviks be stopped when, even at this late date, our Democratic Leadership STILL REFUSES to see things for what they are?

STILL REFUSES to bring up the fact that our voting system is broken, perhaps purposefully.

Without the vote, nothing can change.

I am sorry I come off as being a doomsayer. Certainly there is room for me to be wrong. It wouldn't be the first nor the last time.

We will see in 2006 and 2008 if their is any trustworthiness left in our voting system.

And it kills me to see the Democrats failing time and again to speak out for this fundamental right, and to try to clean up what is corrupt.

Every single goddamn time. I swear, they're all overjoyed when their favorite Republican candidate is elected and not more than a month later they're shocked, outraged, disappointed and surprised when said candidate tries to eliminate domestic partner benefits, endorses an anti-marriage ammendement, etc., etc. I've seen this again and again and I just have to laugh. Our local (now-defunct) gay republican free weekly lobbied hard for Pete Wilson. After the usual, they published an enormous half page headline that said "FUCK YOU!" I laughed and laughed. I still have that issue someplace.
