Oh my! A Freeper almost hit me
When I was in Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Florida and I was in walking in hall. I saw a freeper looked my Dem logo pin on my clothes and he said "Dumb Democrats" and saw his fists were going hit me, but I ran from him quickly. I left because I did not want in trouble.

I am not very happy here because I know there are lot GOP supporters around here including my parents. My mom suggested me don't wear Dem pin so I won't be in trouble.

I am sad right now. Oh well.

Edited on Wed Sep-14-05 02:49 PM by MissMarple
Oops, the title is a spoiler. Hoo boy.

Rachel McAdams stabs the creep right in the windpipe with a pen. That made the movie for me. And was a natural release of some pent up hostility. If she hadn't have done something like that, that movie was going to drive me up the wall. :)

emergency tracheotomy

Just the elbow or heel of hand in the windpipe with great force (hard to do, people usually defend against it)

Try a stiff knee in the groin, then when his head goes down, drive the bone in his node into his brain with your other knee.

:hi:

that will wake him up!

Damn, I'm evil!

105. He also has the right to say "dumb Democrats"
Edited on Wed Sep-14-05 02:54 PM by livefrom
It is un-popular speech that needs protection the most. If free speech only applied to popular speech, or people saying nice things or saying things everyone agreed with, it wouldn't be necessary.

So the school needs to tolerate the "dumb Democrats" comment as much as it has to tolerate the Democratic logo pin, or vice-versa depending on which side they favor.

As Steve Martin said in My Blue Heaven, "I'm exactly the guy Thomas Jefferson put that in for."

btw, if it was a private school with no Federal funding (hard to find), they wouldn't be required to tolerate either expressions of speech, free speech only applies to restriction of speech by the government, not by private individuals or organizations.

Also btw, the assault with the fists could, of course be reported, but the comment addressed the individual expression aspect of the incident.

18. Don't run away
I don't really know if it's the best way or not, but when growing up I was told that you should stand up to bullies. I'm not saying to assault him and get yourself in trouble, but you should have turned around, with an enraged look on your face, and got into his face and yelled, "WHAT DID YOU SAY, MOTHERFUCKER?!?!?!" A bit of spittle coming out of your mouth helps too.

Of course, standing up to bullies also requires that you are willing to defend yourself too. Perhaps it's time to take a juijitsu class? It would help you get into good shape, make friends, and not feel the need to run away from bullies.

174. He sounds like a Deaf person to me.
I am "deaf," not "Deaf," because I still have enough hearing to follow some conversation, especially with my hearing aids in, and also because I don't belong to the Deaf culture. I was hearing impaired as a child, but not enough to inhibit my learning to read and write. But my condition is progressive, and though I don't know ASL, I wish I did. (Most deaf people who know ASL are congenitally deaf and learned it by way of immersion at a school for the Deaf.)

ASL has its own grammar and syntax, and its inflections are visual, not written. English is not the same language at all, though there is a signed version of English that is actually called Signed English. Trying to translate ASL into written English is, in a way, like trying to translate an animated drawing into English. It is far more difficult than trying to translate another foreign language into English (and, yes, ASL is a separate language).

And, Gregory1230, I'd like to invite you to visit my Deaf/HoH website, I'm Listening as Hard as I Can! at http://www.deafnotdumb.homestead.com/index.html

Because I didn't become this severely hearing impaired all at once, I read and write quite well. In fact, I teach college English and write hundreds of articles for the Net on many different topics--including deafness. But those who are congenitally Deaf often have a harder time learning to read and write, and certainly they are likely to have trouble translating from their first language (ASL) into written English.

The rest of you should back off a bit. I believe Gregory 1230 is a Deaf person and a Democrat, not a Freeper troll. I see nothing in his post that would make me suspect otherwise. Of course, I could be wrong, but then again, any one of you could be one of those Freeper trolls who go over there and brag about having racked up over 1000 posts without getting caught here on DU. In fact, I could be a Freeper troll. We have nothing to go on but one another's posts, and I don't see anything in the OP that suggests he is not being honest.

47. Okay, I've just got to ask
What does grammar have to do with being deaf? My aunt is deaf, she was born that way, yet she has perfect grammar. I suppose it's because her grammar came from reading and writing. It certainly had nothing to do with hearing.

66. Not legitimizing this OP quite yet, but
my brother-in-law has been deaf since birth, and even though he speaks well enough to be understood his grammar is similar to what I am reading here.

For example, he has problems knowing when to use 'them' vs. 'those', for example (i.e. "those girls" become "them girls" when writing about his daughters).

In his writing? That's interesting. I would've thought that was a completely different area of the brain. I wonder what makes our relatives so different, then? A different system of education, maybe? My aunt is in her 70s. I have no idea how her school handled her deafness, but I do know that she was expected to succeed in a 'regular' school in a 'regular' class. That must've been very hard.

and I agree. American Sign Language doesn't translate directly. If that's a person's first language, their written English can sound like a second language.

122. If you don't grow up hearing a language,
you don't learn its grammar either. Think about all the grammar someone learns even before they can read. Quite a bit. A deaf person would have none of that until he/she began learning to read. Sign language is a different language with totally different grammar than English. Also, how often do you spell depending on what you hear? The OP (I think) recently got his implant, so there is a lot of time to make up here in learning aurally.

132. It depends on how they first learned to speak.
If Sign Language came first, and English later, their English grammar might be wonky for a long time. Sign language doesn't have the same grammar as English.

But some deaf people learn to lip read and read words from the beginning, and their English skills are usually just like a hearing person's.

They're on the run right now, and really desperate as they see their chickenhawk heroes totally exposed as the cowards they are. Don't ever forget to remind them that their hero was AWOL, too chicken to do what he expects others to do for him. They really, really hate to be reminded of that.

Wish one of them would threaten me, but so far, no such luck (except online of course, where they can talk tough) maybe because I'm usually accompanied by a big, fierce and definitely short-fused ex-military Liberal guy who leaves no doubt in the minds of little fweeps what might happen to them were they to even have bad thoughts about me!

Edited on Wed Sep-14-05 03:16 PM by Gregory1230
It is hard to explain, ok?

Here I go: Before this year, I grew up as deaf person, had lot of problems about English grammar because it was too hard for me to learn. I never learned anything about English grammar. I use hearing aid but did not help me very well. I was not able to understand people and how to speak people.

And now: I have Cochlear Implant (which in my left ear) that allow me to hear everything including birds, cars, etc (that I never hear things before). I am learning about how to speak act like an hearing person and understanding with people. I am intelligent person because I am smart about computers. In fact, I want to become computer programmer (after I can graduate for BA for computer science from Univ. of Central Florida, but I must earn AA first from Central Florida Community College).

So that's why I said I "was" deaf person. I am now almost hearing person but still need learn how to speech and English grammar. I hope you understand me very well.

I understand your problem with spoken/signed-to-written language.

My grandparents raised me, and my grandfather was quite deaf from permanent nerve damage. He contracted the measels while posted in England during WWI. All they could do was quarentine the ill. The diease damaged his hearing and he was forced to wear hearing aids for the rest of his life.

He missed so much because he had difficulty understanding people's speach. His hearing loss also isolated him because of the problem with background noise and the hearing aid quality of the day. He, of course, had normal hearing before the illness, but I noticed the difference in the way he related to language.

I am so glad you can hear birds now. Welcome to the world of sound.

There is a very good Deaf school not far from where I live. (It's in Olathe, KS.) Because of the Deaf school, there is also a theater in Olathe that shows closed captioned movies. Otherwise, when I want to see a movie, I wait for it to come out on DVD so I can view it with captions.

118. I know the bully stories seem cliche, but they are absolutely true.
I grew up poor and had some older kids that would follow our school bus and try to beat us up for fun. One day, one caught up with me and I was surrounded by him and his friends. He hit me and I was shocked that it was no big deal -- my drunken stepdad hit much harder. I nailed him back. The entire group got in and pulled us apart, but they knew from then on that at the very least, they would be hurting just like I was if we got into it.

From that moment on in my life, no one but no one f***ed with me, ever. Even in a very bad neighborhood. My rule was that you might take me down, but I'll hurt you on the way out. And that rule was enough to not have trouble... The best part was I never had to act like a tough guy or be a jerk. I got to be me. I just took no s**t.

Don't back down. Worst case is you report him and he is expelled and brought up on charges.

Best case is you call his bluff and he leaves you alone for good.

I know it's easier said than done, but once you've done it, you will be seriously liberated in a way that you have to experience to appreciate.

123. Good example...
I grew up in a poor neighborhood as well where you had to defend yourself or be a punching bag. As a kid I could usually work it out, but in middle school I had the bullies waiting for me after school (walking from an unsafe area to your home turf can suck). At first I ran, but they caught me eventually. Then I fought them off - that was more satisfying :D After that I decided that bullies are mostly pussies trying to make up for a poor ego. Eventually I started to challenge people immediately if they were talking trash - amazing how fast they back down if you don't fall for their bullshit. 125. Um.. we aren't talking about kids or family members
we are talking about a total stranger walking up and attempting to assault someone over a pin on their shirt. This reeks of bullshit. This person claims to be in college but can't compose a complete sentence. He claims to be deaf, not stupid. The story, the "oh my" the bad grammar, the amazing coincidence that the poster happens to be deaf, all smell of troll to me. I'll be the first one to apologize if I'm wrong, but I took a wall of shit over not believing Mr Stinky Bushes a few days ago and I turned out to be right.

okay - i'll take back what i'm saying about grammar, on the chance that you are in fact disabled as you say you are.

but still - what type of freeper tries to beat up on someone that's disabled?

that's even more pathetic.

i think you need to take some sort "fuck with me, and i will fuck you the fuck up" martial art. If for no other reason but to be better prepared to stand your own ground when people try to bully you.

The attacks are a waste of valueable time and it is wrong in the first place.
Administration is capable of figuring out who is a troll or not.
The attacks and abuse on posters are ugly.
Help Frances Newton, her execution is in less than 35 minutes from now.

183. So you were right once.
Good for you. Don't believe his story? That's no reason for insults. Just because you haven't seen something of the sort happen, doesn't mean that it couldn't happen. Perhaps there was more to it then his Dem pin, maybe it's because of his disablity, too. Maybe, just maybe, there are assholes out there that hit people for no reason. This isn't some happy world where people don't feel the need to hurt others. Regardless, I don't care whether you, personally, believe the story. What bothers me are the amount of insults directed at his grammar. I see plenty of insults directed at his grammar and spelling, so yeah, I think it's about the grammar too. Whether it's about that to you doesn't matter. You weren't the only one responding in this thread. And I certainly wasn't directing my response at you personally.

Won't be the first time. Won't be the last. I will tell you that if you read all my posts from the beginning I was never rude and I never called anyone jerk or asshole, I just said I didn't trust the story and gave my reasons. The best arguement anyone can come up with is Freepers do sometimes punch out total strangers. Doesn't convince me. I've had enough of defending my position, if you don't like it the ignore button is a click away.
