***Aurora Potential HIGH tonight!!!****
Latest Alert: September 14 1555 UTC EXTENDED WARNING: Proton 10MeV Integral Flux above 10pfu expected

Last Advisory Bulletin MORE MAJOR SOLAR FLARES EXPECTED FROM ACTIVE NOAA REGION 808 ,
issued September 14, 2005

AURORA ALERT!
A coronal mass ejection (CME) is racing toward Earth and it could spark a severe geomagnetic storm when it arrives--perhaps tonight (Sept. 14th and 15th). People everywhere should be alert for auroras.

If this incoming CME does hit Earth's magnetic field as hard as forecasters expect, auroras could appear in places where they are seldom seen: California, Arizona, Texas and elsewhere. Stay tuned for updates.

5. Is there any way to tell if there WILL be auroras that I can see?
Can they predict if the light will get to a certain latitude, f'rinstance?

9. ALL Aurora Forecasts are qualified....
...with "MIGHT", "POSSIBLE", "CONDITIONS GOOD".
The forecasters cannot predict when Auroras will DEFINITELY be visible and for which areas.

They CAN tell you with 100% certainty when Auroras will NOT appear.
Sometimes the conditions are PERFECT, but NO SHOW.
The BEST you can do is go outside around mid-night, and LOOK UP. :)

(from OP)"If this incoming CME does hit Earth's magnetic field as hard as forecasters expect, auroras could appear in places where they are seldom seen: California, Arizona, Texas and elsewhere."

Here is a link to a network where observers log in Aurora Sightings.
You can check here to see if there are any reports from your Latitude.

10. it's easy
they end just before you go to look,
and start right after you go inside.

In this chart, the green line is predicted, the blus line is observed by USAF. The higher it goes, the brighter the auroras are.
http://sec.noaa.gov/rpc/costello/index.html

There is a mailing list which predicts when and where it will be visible, but sometimes they are way off.
