2. I like this one better: |

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United Federation of Planets, and to the galaxy for which it stands, one universe, under everybody, with liberty and justice for all species. http://teletypeturtle.blogspot.com/2005/06/i-pledge-allegiance-to-united.html

5. The problem that I have is that... |

what is pushed on us ever since we were small children is the whole "god bless america" crap, and patriotism this and patriotism that. And I fell for it, hook line and sinker, for years.
Ya know what's wrong with that, in my opinion? It leads to a whole bunch of people who start thinking that God cares more about America than he does about other countries. It leads to an "us vs them" mentality. A feeling that we are somehow God's chosen country.
Ya know what? God doesn't care about America anymore than it does about any other country. For the people that believe, God loves all his children equally. God doesn't give a shit about these imaginary boundaries that we've made on the planet.
We are NOT special, America. We're just a bunch of people living over here. And there are a whole bunch of people living other places that are just as special as we are. We're all human first. We all deserve respect, dignity, and food and shelter. But as long as we keep on pushing this "God bless America" crap, we're going to keep on churning out mindless freeper flag-waving types who think turbin-heads and brown skinned people are the enemy.

Well Said...The pledge of allegience is essentially a tool used to indoctrinate the idea of American superiority on the young and naive

7. Surely the more vulnerable & truthful version of your country that was |
|
hidden is worthy of love & fighting for? As are all the people within.

10. I love my country, and all the ideals that it was founded upon. |
|
Don't get me wrong. This is a country that was born of great ideas and ideals. All of them worth defending and fighting for. It is why I hate Bush so much. Because he is destroying this country.
I just don't believe in the brainwashing of people, trying to convince them that we are better than everyone else. More worthy of God's love. God's chosen country. THAT is what I disagree with. We are a great country and have done a lot of wonderful things. But I also won't hide behind the fact that we have also done a lot of horrible things. The flag-waving freepers prefer to sweep those under the rug and pretend they never happened.
I love my country, and will defend the principles for which it was founded, but I won't blindly wave the flag anymore. I will be proud of my country when my country does things to be proud of. And I will criticize my country when it does things worthy of criticism. I do appreciate the fact that I live in a country that I can criticize the government, however even that right is being eroded.
Love of country must go hand in hand with skepticism of government.

11. Agreed. Patriotism is an old trick on conservatives to get the poor to |
|
vote with the elite classes. Disraeli wrote about it in England in the 19th Century.
