Fundie Freeps Go Wild in Response To Passage Of Gay Hate Crimes Bill
Edited on Wed Sep-14-05 09:52 PM by ruggerson
Lest any rational straight people forget what kind of insane attitude their gay brethren (and sisthren :)) have to confront on a daily basis, read some of this for a reality shock.

This thread is actually sad evidence of exactly why a hate crimes bill is needed.

"If the House passed it, then those fa**oty-assed swishes in the Senate will just float this butt-pirate piece of legislation through."

"I had better get this off my chest now.
Against nature, queer, fa*, abomination!"

"Homosexuality is a fetish, not a lifestyle."

Hate crimes??? Isn't EVERY crime a hate crime, I am soooooo sick of every minority having their own set of rules.

9. I don't support thought crime laws
Which is really what hate crime enhancements are.

IIRC the elements of the crime of murder in California are:
1) A human being died
2) They died unlawfully
3) There was malice aforethought

If you kill someone, you should go to jail or die for it (not going to get into the right/wrong of the death penalty). It should not matter if you did it to rob them, because you hated the color of their skin, or their sexual orientation. Same should go with assault etc.

When the state can change the charges based on what they say I am thinking, can sedition enhancements be far away? We should be free to think our own thoughts and be judged (literally) on our actions.

11. They're about MOTIVES
Criminal law examines motive all the time. Sentencing is often reduced or lengthened due to motive.

The fiction that hate crimes has to do with "thought" policing criminals is a rightwing talking point.

And primarily, hate crime laws merely give a judge leeway to impose harsher penalties. Thus if I rob you, I am subject to five years in prison. If I rob you and terrorize your family by shouting "filthy jews!" while I am doing it, I am subject to ten.

How you can object to that is beyond me.

16. i agree, targeting and killing a person or persons specifically
because of their race, sexual orientation or nationality is a hate crime and should be treated as such.

17. Suppose you shoot and kill someone. Was it a crime?
Not if it was self-defense.
What you were thinking makes ALL the difference.

2. They Must Be So Isolated from the Real World
Not much you can do, Freepers. This is the real world, so suck it up!

3. I figure the freepers are a lost cause.
But at least they are upfront about how they feel.

What disturbs me even more are the far more subtle sorts of homophobia that go on daily here on DU.

Frankly, I think the difference between the freepers and the DUers who post things here like "well, you are just a fringe group" or "it's just not the right time for your issues" is only a matter of degree.

4. We are the last acceptable prejudice
It's unacceptable to be racist, sexist, religiously bigoted, anti semitic, etc.

But the media is still populated with idiots who try to maintain the legitimacy of homophobia by presenting it as "mainstream."

7. W went far right in the last election (behind the scenes)
Now the GOP know if they don't knock off the fundamentalist crap and prejudice against anyone who isn't like they think they should be, they've lost even playing in the game next election.

The silly freepers will have to live with it.

8. Plenty of 'em
In one of the threads about the pledge of allegiance ruling someone made the comment that the party was being harmed by supporting "fringe issues" like the pledge and gay rights.

Or here's this not-so-subtle gem from today: http://tinyurl.com/9sj3b

Then there was a thread about LGBT charities and Hurricane Katrina relief that made one person irate that were only looking after our own kind ... but yet she had posted supportively about relief efforts geared to save pets. (So I guess we know we rate lower than animals with her.)

Those have only been in the past few days and doesn't even begin to get into all the "it's your fault Kerry lost because you wanted gay marriage" posts that still pop up from time to time even almost two years after the election.

Frankly, any time LGBT members of the DU venture out beyond the LGBT forum, we run the risk of encountering some form of homophobia on the DU. Most of the time it's subtle, but it very definitely comes across in some of the posts.

10. I'm sorry to hear that
Very sorry. I guess we ran into a little of that type thinking when posters said we should let loose of the pro choice stand.

12. So true, Erika
I've heard those kind of comments about pro-choice Democrats as well.

Oh well ... I am glad the Democrats truly offer a "big tent" to accommodate so many points of view, but I start to get nervous when some take it upon themselves to tell the rest of us we should abandon our long-held beliefs "for the good of the party." That kind of thinking seems more like how those "other folks" run their party.

5. It really is sick
I seriously think people like that have serious problem they can't deal with and say things like this. They can't have an intelligent discussion without using that kind of language.
