"The Passion of the Penguins": Neocons adopt "March of the Penguins" as
their proof of "intelligent design", "a statement on monogamy", and (get THIS shit) a "condemnation of gay marriage". :wtf:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/13/science/13peng.html?incamp=article_popular

Medved opens his maw to spew this rediculous statement:

"March of the Penguins," the conservative film critic and radio host Michael Medved said in an interview, is "the motion picture this summer that most passionately affirms traditional norms like monogamy, sacrifice and child rearing." :puke:

Then THIS idiot:

To Andrew Coffin, writing in the widely circulated Christian publication World Magazine, that is a winning argument for the theory that life is too complex to have arisen through random selection.

"That any one of these eggs survives is a remarkable feat - and, some might suppose, a strong case for intelligent design," he wrote. "It's sad that acknowledgment of a creator is absent in the examination of such strange and wonderful animals. But it's also a gap easily filled by family discussion after the film."
:puke:

(an aside: Hey Jackasses! Since you're adopting the Emperor Penguin as a posterchild to promote your little "theories", maybe you oughta do something to preserve their habitat which is being ERADICATED BY THAT GLOBAL WARNING STUFF YOU GUYS KEEP IGNORING. Just a thought. Morans.)

But my favorite quote--the one that kept my head from exploding:

....as Laura Kim, a vice president of Warner Independent, put it: "You know what? They're just birds."

1. Too bad when the water warms up and these eggs have no place
to hatch.

2. What about the gay penguins of the Central Park Zoo?
Ummm ... they're choosing PENGUINS as a condemnation of gay marriage? Have they forgotten the famous gay penguins at the Central Park Zoo?

Central Park Zoo's gay penguins ignite debate
Dinitia Smith, New York Times

Saturday, February 7, 2004

"New York -- Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo in Manhattan, are completely devoted to each other. For nearly six years now, they have been inseparable. They exhibit what in penguin parlance is called "ecstatic behavior": That is, they entwine their necks, they vocalize to each other, they have sex. Silo and Roy are, to anthropomorphize a bit, gay penguins.

When offered female companionship, they have adamantly refused it. And the females aren't interested in them, either.

At one time, the two seemed so desperate to incubate an egg together that they put a rock in their nest and sat on it, keeping it warm in the folds of their abdomens, said their chief keeper, Rob Gramzay. Finally, he gave them a fertile egg that needed care to hatch. Things went perfectly, and a chick, Tango, was born.

"... Roy and Silo are hardly unusual. Indeed, scientists have found homosexual behavior throughout the animal world. "

3. No intelligent designer would subject creatures to such torture
There are so many examples like this that make intelligent design so obviously a crock.

For example, consider the panda. Who would intelligently design a mammal that eats bamboo, which is not very nutritious at all, and a large mammal that has a tiny 3 ounce baby.

17. The movie was mostly torturous to watch. Most of their lives are enduring
hardship to make sure that the species survives, only to start the cycle all over again. I found it a very depressing film.

their continent drifted further & further away from survivability

all species died except theirs

even the mosquitoes & cockroaches

it touched my heart

god did not care

he could have put down a finger & moved the continent a bit to the north

god didn't care

i don't even want to hear anymore abt god, he abandoned them, he has abandoned us

if there is a god, what has he done for us

4. What about the lesbian swans of Boston?
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/08/12/thou_art_no_romeo?mode=PF

Thou art no Romeo
Famed swan couple is all-female
By Donovan Slack, Globe Staff | August 12, 2005

"Boston's beloved pair of swans -- feted by city leaders, residents, and tourists alike as one of the Hub's most celebrated summer attractions -- are a same-sex couple. Yes, scientific tests have shown that the pair, named Romeo and Juliet, are really Juliet and Juliet.

"This year and last, the swans have laid eggs in the spring and then stood guard at the nest as visitors and nearby residents made regular pilgrimages, hoping to see the eggs hatch. Neither batch did. Turns out, that's because they were never fertilized by a male swan.

''If these two swans are happy together, they shouldn't have to have a guy," said Emma Stokien, a 15-year-old from New York. ''It's good to have the swans as a symbol of the acceptance in Massachusetts."

5. From your heading
I thought they were remaking the Passion movie with penguins. And I could just picture the Jesus penguin with his wings stretched out on a cross.

Oh, I'd better go to bed before I go to hell...

Emperor penguins are seasonally monogamous. THAT'S what the Fundies want to promote?

And I'm assuming--since there were no little penguin ceremonies with little penguin judges holding little penguin bibles in front of little penguin couples and witnesses depicted in the documentary--I'm just assuming that whole marriage thing is now optional for them as well.

8. Will this make the Linux fanatics shut up?
They put penguins everywhere. They claim it to be a symbol of independent thinking and refusal to cave in to corporate evil. Now the biggest promoters of corporate evil have swiped the penguin out from under them.

Which proves that, if you don't consciously oppose them, the megacorps types will swipe everything out from under you, including your symbols.

12. Grasping at straws
To fundies, the crux of Christianity is this: "on the third day Jesus rose from the dead." (I'm paraphrasing)

If evolution is true, if homosexuality is biological and not a choice, if pre-marital sex is not punished by pregnancy (hence the obsession with abortion), then God is not all powerful. If God is not all powerful, then He may not actually be able to raise people from the dead. And there might not be an afterlife. And death might be final. And that scares the shit out of a fundie.

So they believe (accept as true without evidence) that the universe is 5,000 years old, the Grand Canyon was formed by the Great Flood, and penguins prove that God hates fags. They know that God is a mean f*cker who will send them to Hell if their faith waivers the slightest, so they have to eliminate anyone and anything that may challenge their narrow view of the world. Only if they can force everyone else to see it their way do they know they'll go to Heaven when the Rapture comes. Non-believers will get stuck reading the "Left Behind" books.

To me, science explores the "how" and spirituality examines the "why", and one does not invalidate the other. In fact, taken together (but not in the same class!) the two provide a window through which to view the wonder of the Universe.

There doesn't seem to be any stopping them, however. Fundies are Bozo the Clown Bop Bags that won't stay down when they're knocked over by the facts. They just change memes ("Creationism" becomes "Intelligent Design") and pop back up for another round of b.s.

re: "March of the Penguins"...Leave it to a fundie (the American Taliban) to take a wonderful movie and f*ck it up.

And this, too (which basically sums up this whole farce):

I wonder if lady penguins follow the example of their sisters in other bird species, choosing a stolidly reliable mate to nest with but getting fertilised by their favourite Casanova?

16. They didn't see the movie. Penguins are only monogamous until the babies
can fend for themselves, and when a new mating season begins, they can then mate with a different penguin.

23. It's a FRENCH movie
Penguins 'top' French films in US

A documentary about penguins has become the most successful French film at the US box office, reports have said.
The March of the Penguins has sold $66.8m (£36.6m) in tickets since its June release overtaking Luc Besson thriller The Fifth Element.

The documentary is favourite to be named as France's entry for the best foreign language film at the Oscars, according to Screen International.

It follows Emperor penguins walking to their breeding ground in Antarctica.
