So my Dad's now a liberal. |
|
My father, whom I learned politics from, has always been a libertarian republican, and often has been very right wing (supported Buchanan's Bid in '88, Perot in '92). He's donated to numerous R candidates in the past, including Roger Wicker and David Vitter.
My Dad is currently living in my town with his girlfriend's family and my sister and grandparents, all of whom lived in NOLA until Katrina. So I've been spending a good deal of time over at his rented house, and have noticed something....
He thinks * is the single worst president of his lifetime. He actually TURNED OFF FOX NEWS because he couldn't stand O'Lielly.
Best of all, his favorite news show, is THE DAILY SHOW. He got cable so he could watch THE DAILY SHOW and football. Tonight he was singing the praises of Jon Stewarts smearing of Tom Coburn, and actually made the comment that the put "under G-d" in the pledge when he was a kid, and they could take it out now.
Note... All this probably started when my sister came out a few years ago, but its accelerated.
My world is slowly righting itself.
:woohoo: :woohoo:

1. That is truly awesome. |
|
I have two RW co-workers who are coming around. One had the rude awakening of a lifetime over how * and his cabal handled Katrina. The other is starting to display some doubt as I slowly try to chip away at his talking points.
The harder we work at it, the more success we'll have at helping most Americans see the horror of *.

she used to be the liberal one... spent her whole career providing medical care for a rural community w/o caring if she got paid or not (much to the consternation of my dad). Now she's worse than ever, just gave $1,000 to the NRCC.

9. how bout your dad talk to my dad |
|
and knock some sense into him?
i actually haven't talked to my dad since Katrina, only because we've both been busy. if i talk to him soon and he is still defending Bush, then i truly give up on him ever changing.

11. I've seen maybe a half-dozen people make the same transition: |
|
libertarian (lower-case "l"), "conservative" primarily in their suspicion of the present-day Democratic party (invariably on defense, paycheck issues and guns), but poignantly Democratic in their yearning for another FDR, another JFK, another RFK, even (though only in terms of domestic policies) another LBJ. Every one of these folks -- all of them my age (65) or close to it -- have always been very thoughtful about their politics, and every one has returned to the Democratic fold, motivated by deep anger at the economic war Bush is waging against elderly people, disabled, the poor in general (and indeed anyone who has to work for a living).
I applaud your father! It is precisely because so many are awakening that we stand such a huge chance of taking Congress back next year -- that is, if John Edwards' brave willingness to at last speak the ugly socioeconomic truth isn't somehow suppressed.

14. Sounds like he's catching up to where Goldwater was before he died. |
|
Goldwater said then that HE would be considered a liberal by the crowd controlling the GOP the last two decades.
