Is Bush having his "Carter and the Rabbit" moment?

Remember the media feeding frenzy when this incident was reported?

On a fishing trip in Plains, Georgia, President Carter had an encounter with a "swamp rabbit". This seemingly trivial event was seized upon by the press and became a sort of Rorschach test of the Carter presidency: reporters and commentators saw in this story whatever they wanted to see in Carter's administration.

Although being "attacked" by what could have been a rabid "swamp rabbit" is no where near as demeaning as having the President of the United States ask permission to go to the "little president's room."

1. I was just a kid, but I remember that rabbit thing clearly...

I was a big Carter fan even then and it pissed me off that people were making a big deal out of nothing.

Bush's note is more like Ford falling down the airplane steps, remember that?

Or maybe the Nixon Republican Cloth Coat speech.

4. Or Reagan's "we begin bombing in five minutes..."
"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

During a microphone check, unaware that he was being broadcast. (August 11, 1984)

No doubt this kind of statement pleased the NeoCons/future BushBots but it's hardly the kind of statement the POTUS should make, even in jest.

It seems GOP presidents say (and write) the "darnedest things."

11. my very republican father
got furious with anyone who made fun of carter for "running from a bunny." he laid them out flat "if you're in the wild & you see a wild animal coming TOWARDS you, RUN...it's RABID." even though he didn't like jimmy carter, he stuck up for him on this one.

2. No. If anything, this note bullshit is helping * -- after all, the more
time the press etc. spend on this trivia, the less time on N.O., the recent wave of suicide bombers in Iraq, gas prices, etc. etc.

9. Don't worry, those other things aren't going away anytime soon.
There's nothing wrong with showing evidence of what kind of dimwit the president is. Some people need proof that he ain't walking on water...

7. Katrina was his Carter hostage rescue moment.
Too bad he's not running for reelection. I mean election. Aww, I don't know what I mean.

Stuff like the 'bathroom break' makes him more endearing to his minions. "He's just a regular guy! I could have a beer with him!"

8. the hostage rescue was a failure for sure, but it certainly
doesn't compare with Katrina especially in terms of lives lost.

12. Has this photo appeared on television or print news?
I missed it if it was in the NYT or NYDN. Haven't seen any television today.

I've gotten a few emails, but I'm sure many believe it was fake--I had to convince my husband; he's certain he saw it several years ago as an Onion-type parody.

Has there been mass commentary, like that which followed Carter's encounter with the rabbit? Don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyone see anything in the MSM yet? (editor & publisher doesn't count).
