WP: 70% Of Teens Are Having Oral Sex
Study Looks at Teen Sex Levels

By Laura Sessions Stepp
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, September 15, 2005; 10:54 AM

Slightly more than half of American teenagers, ages 15 to 19, have engaged in oral sex, with females and males reporting similar levels of experience, according to the most comprehensive national survey of sexual behaviors ever released by the federal government. The report today by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that the figure increases to about 70 percent of 18- and 19-year-olds.

"This is a point of major social transition," James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a reproductive health organization, said yesterday. "The data are now coming out and roiling the idea that boys are the hunters and young girls are the prey. It absolutely defies the stereotype."

The newly released data, gathered in 2002, are sure to stir debate over abstinence-only sex education. Supporters of such programs say they have resulted in young people delaying intercourse, but opponents say they simply have led young people to substitute other risky behaviors, especially fellatio and cunnilingus. The new data tend to support the latter view, showing that nearly one in four virgin teens has engaged in oral sex.

60. This is NOT good news. There is a high risk of STDs with oral sex
and kids that young don't have the emotional capacity to handle sex. We're going to see a generation of screwed up people if this trend continues.

STDs are nothing to laugh about. And oral sex is still sex, which young teenagers are not equipped to handle.

Geez, why do you people have such a problem understanding this? I'm upset by 11, 12, 13, 14, and even 15 year olds thinking that oral sex is no big deal.

141. Gotcha.
Personally, I lost my virginity at age 16, which I don't think is (or was) a terribly uncommon age for such things to happen.

As far as my own kids go, I would prefer they wait until they're 18, but I want them to have information and access to contraception and STD prevention just in case.

136. No, oral sex is NOT quite real sex.
And what do you mean by "young teens"? 18- and 19-year olds? Sounds like they're the ones who're doing most of it.

This is nothing new; it's only the talking about it so adults can "view with alarm" that's new.

The point is that these kids think oral sex is a perfectly safe, perfectly acceptable alternative to vaginal sex. AND IT ISN'T. STDs happen to be a real threat with oral sex too.

128. I refer you to the article: "Ages 15-19"
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 01:12 PM by impeachdubya
Are STDs an issue? Certainly. Which is why kids need REAL sex education, as opposed to this "just say no" abstinence crap, which, when it fails, (as it statistically, usually, does) tends to fail BIG and lead to kids using NO protection whatsoever.

But I refer you to your earlier post. If, as you say, "kids that young can't handle sex", and "we're going to see a generation of screwed up kids because of this", then it stands to reason that we are already seeing a LOT of generations of screwed up kids. (Oh, wait.. maybe "kids" isn't even really the right word, since, as another poster pointed out, 18 and 19 year olds are legally ADULTS.)

I don't know how old YOU are, but I "grew up" a long time ago TYVM, and BELIEVE ME people were having plenty of sex from ages 15-19 back in my day as well.

But if you really want to convince yourself that this is new, or some kind of crisis, be my guest.

135. I don't know how old YOU are, but I grew up in the 60s and 70s.
And of course people were having sex, and plenty of it, from the teens onward. Don't insult me by thinking that I think this is new.

What's new is that oral sex is taken so casually by these teens and PRETEENS. THAT is what upsets me. And the fact that STDs are easily spread by oral sex.

But if you really want to convince yourself that 11 and 12 year old kids having oral sex is okay, and that transmission of more STDs is okay, be my guest.

140. Did I say that?
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 03:05 PM by impeachdubya
Because, um, I don't think that I said anything even remotely resembling "11 and 12 year olds having oral sex is okay".

What I said was, the excerpt from the article refers to ages 15-19. The 70% figure has to do specifically with ages 18 and 19. Now, maybe you're one of those people who loves to conflate and confuse arguments by dragging "protecting the children" into debates about behaviors involving consenting adults, which 18 and 19 year olds clearly are, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you don't do that.

If I "insulted" you, I apologize- it was not intentional. But it was only through echoing back sentiments you yourself seemed to be raising. Read your posts. There's nothing in there about "11 and 12 year olds".

6. Thank you Republicans.
Since insisting an investigation into a president's private life be on TV 24/7 the whole world got educated about oral sex. I know teenagers are going to be sexually active and this is preferable to getting pregnant but I don't think it would be 70% of teenagers if every detail had not been blasted at us for a year or two. I know they were desperate to embarrass Clinton but should have considered some family values consequences.

They'll say that Clinton classifying oral sex as "not having sexual relations with that woman" led to all of this. Just watch.

It's always the Clenis.

Forget that when you are a teen, you think about sex more or less every waking moment. (Okay, at least if you are a male teen - I can't speak for the other side.)

When I was that age, back in the early '70s, there was a definite practice of "everything but..." among classmates. The understanding was that "having sex" meant genital intercourse. Anything less than that was "fooling around," and certainly not "having sex." You could do anything short of genital penetration and still be considered a virgin.

This is what amused me so much about Monicagate -- the talking heads attacking Bill for "obviously" lying when he said he hadn't had sex with her. It made me wonder what sort of youth they lived through -- by the standards of my contemporaries, they clearly hadn't had sex, merely "fooled around." (Which is not saying that it was all right for a married man to fool around with another woman, but his semantic distinction would have been in keeping with the times in which I -- and probably Clinton himself -- grew up.)

In muslim countries, where virginity until marriage is considered a requirement for women, oral sex is an accepted though not publicized alternative. Accept it folks, sex is gonna happen. Any normal person needs an outlet, so whatever floats your boat.

"Many teenagers have fully accepted the idea that postponing intercourse is a good thing to do, Brindis said. When they weigh the advantages and disadvantages of intercourse versus other forms of sex, they decide that they are far more at risk with intercourse, both because of pregnancy and the greater risk of disease."

While some STD's can be transmitted orally, a major shift away from penetrative to oral sex should do wonders to reduce the spread of the worst of them among teens. Plus, nobody ever got pregnant from a hummer.

On the other hand, my wife overheard my 11 year old daughter talking to one of her friends about oral sex recently. My wife listened in for a moment and was relieved to hear that the discussion was about one of the OTHER girls in her school who had done it, and they were debating whether or not it would be icky (the decision was a resouding yes, so I can breathe easily for the moment). When my wife talked to my daughter about it later though, we were kind of shocked when she told us that kids in her age group don't consider it to be sex at all. From the perspective of girls her age, it ranks right up there with kissing with your tongue.

The danger, of course, is that by making oral sex "not sex", you open the door for younger and younger children to experiment with it. What happens when a 9 year old hears her older sister talking about hummers, and describes it as "not really sex"? What happens when one of these girls has some pervert climb into bed with them and give them that "special kiss"? Mentally, will they even realize they're being raped?

Overall, I'm glad the trend is moving away from penetrative sex, but some of the implications here are a bit problematic.

I kid you not.:( I didn't read this article. Is the pre-teen info in it? It's like the new "in" thing to do. I have a 12 year old son and he HATES it when I talk to him about NOT having sex, of any kind, until he's emotionally mature enough to handle it. He said, "Mom, I'm ONLY 12 years old!" WHEW! That was the reaction I was hoping for. :) At any rate, times have changed since I was a kid. When I was 12, sex never entered my mind.....from what I can remember. ;)

Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 02:19 PM by BullGooseLoony
So, what I was doing there was clarifying that I was talking about women having anal sex with men, and that it is on the rise.

Otherwise, people might have thought that I was referring to "butt sex" between men. And, in this specific instance, I was not.

HOWEVER, I do believe that butt sex between men happens in high school, as well. I'm just not sure whether or not that practice is increasing.

So, thanks for wasting two minutes of my time with that idiotic question.

75. The STD part concerns me
Oral sex was more common than intercourse at my rural Ohio high school and I graduated in 1996. It was considered less bad/serious than intercourse so many couples who were "going together" for a while were doing it. I don't know if 70% of seniors at my school had engaged in oral sex or not.
As far as I knew, most teens who had intercourse, used condomns during the act. No one who I knew ever used condomns for oral sex. While STD transmission may be less virualant for oral sex than intercourse, having oral sex be considered as no less serious than kissing would not be a good thing in terms of teens contracting STDS if most teens do not use protection for such acts.

77. It isn't less virulent
My sister the nurse sees ALOT of kids coming in with STDs in their throat and mouth, and it's damn hard to get rid of via antibiotics, much harder than genital STDs in most cases. Most of thees idiot kids don't even know you can get STDs via oral sex (see what abstinence only classes get you).

Also, per some articles I've read, most girls do this for guys because they "have to." They're expected to do this on dates. Crazy. In my day (I'm 40), oral sex was something you did that was MORE intimate than regular sex, something you did with your BF or GF....I have a big problem with this. Kids might not eb getting pregnant, but 12 and 13 year olds re doing this, and that's too young to be sexually active. They aren't emotionally mature yet.

For the record, I am soooo not a prude. Too x-rated for here, though....

139. ahhh....what is the margin of error?
what about the "wish factor"? what about the "ya i`ll i`m in favor of oral sex"... when i was a teenager i`d certinly mark yes! and if we would have had the same survey back in my day it wouldn`t be to far from this one....i hate to tell the kids but their moms and dads probaly did the same thing...

144. Question - is it mostly the boys who are receiving this, or are the girls
getting some oral sex too??

(I'm highly suspicious that the first one is the case, but it would ssem only fair that the girls should receive as well as give...)

146. About even...
... or so I heard on an interview on PBS. The old stats were more heavily weighted toward boys getting and girls giving, but apparently young women have come a long way.

The interview indicated that the kids probably weren't exaggerating, since their answers were consistent, and the kids answer taped questions, not face-to-face with an interviewer.

I taught High School from 1970 to 1998, and I noticed the change to oral sex in the late 1980's. They said it had been common in Junior High. (Kids talk, believe me. If you think your kid doesn't blab about his personal life - and his family's - you're wrong.)

We told them that oral doesn't make you safe from AIDS or STD's because of tiny lesions in just about everybody's mouth, but they felt it was safer than intercourse, and no pregnancy.

The thing I found interesting is that they felt that oral sex wasn't as "intimate" as intercourse. That's kinda strange to me, and I told them so.

The Freepoids are saying Clinton started all this oral sex stuff. Shows just how backward those people are. They probably think "clitoris" is an allergy medication.

152. Back in the mid to late 70's
We were all having intercourse, and the boys were going down on the girls, but most girls didn't return the favor - it was "gross"

It was our manly duty to bring our ladies to climax.

151. Can you be gay if you don't have "real" sex?
If oral sex isn't "really" sex then there are a HELL of lot of gay men and lesbians who are still virgins.

In fact, this almost negates the very concept of gay sex. If it doesn't count for them, why should it count for us?
