Remember the NOLA baby that wasn't waking up so easily? He died
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 04:34 PM by eleny
I believe that the lady was outside the convention center. She was holding her baby and saying he wasn't waking up so easily.

I'm just now watching MSNBC and they reported that the baby had died. This was the first I heard about him. One of many for sure. But they showed that lady several times over these weeks.

Sorry if this is a dupe.

I think it was some time after. But still.

I want to know about the little boy in the red tee shirt, too. He was in tears.

What happened to "suffer the little children"? Seems like this administration interprets that as "make the children suffer". What bastards.

I was hoping that someone would help her. She reminded me of the mother in the train yard scene from the movie, "The Pianist". In the movie, she kept going up to the other "evacuees" asking for a drop of water for her child who was dying of thirst. That image so closely aligned with that image from the movie for me, that I have not been able to forget it.

I hope that she can find peace some day, but I fear that she never will.

7. That's a sin, really it is. I hope some liberal lawyers, who don't
mind doing some pro bono work, start putting together these stories of deaths, that didn't have to happen, and that they file civil suits against everyone of these neo-cons so that they can't run away from this. I hope everyone of their waking moments are spent having to deal with these legal actions for years to come.

75. Be that as it may, unless you have a direct line to "God"
I doubt that a bolt of lightning is going to come down and put the "transgressor" in prison.

I am am anything but an Atheist (nor am I a Christian; in many ways, in fact, staunchly critical of the Judeo-Christian faith). Nevertheless, I firmly believe that the strong hand of Karma is going to come along and visit upon these thugs some horrific fate that makes a Cat 5 look like a cakewalk.

However, Karma takes more time than I think we have.

Therefore....the courts (be they national or international) are our best bet for getting rid of the problem so that this scourge cannot continue killing people in this way.

84. Sin, Karma, it's all the same
It's all a metaphor for what we hope happens to Bush. As for the courts, they are useless. Welcome to the new America. Rome, the Vatican, the Soviet Union... we are one of those empires now, where the government is beyond the people and rules only for its own power. We'll get no justice from them. The people at the Convention Center were waiting for that old government, too.

88. Sorry, but "sin" and "karma" are not the same.
(hate to be cranky here, but I really have a thing with respect for non-Christian religions and the differences between them).

On a purely "factual" level, the concepts aren't the same.

Again, the bigger point is, tho, the only kind of justice we have any "control" over (albeit very little and inceasingly less) is LEGAL.

It is a sin to WATCH people beg for help and not get up off your ass and just give it to them. The president's job - what we pay him for - is to lead and protect ALL of us, not just the wealthiest 2%, the loudest evangelists and largest industries.

Hers wasn't the only gut-wrenching plea I heard and what really, really is getting to me right now is that THEY saw what we did, heard what we did, and STILL they took the time to contemplate as if they had all the time in the world.

135. The thing is, the reporter had to report, or we wouldn't know about any of
any of this - if the reporters dropped their cameras to start rescuing people, the Nat'l Guard would have gotten there even later, the helicopters and the buses would have taken even longer. The reporters must have been devastated but if they didn't do the incredible reporting that they did things would have been even worse.

I did wonder why George Bush didn't fly some sick babies to safety in AF1. I think he had plenty of room.

there were gaggles of press in the french quarter with all sorts of provisions, and just to have asked one of the crew to get that mother and baby out of danger would have been a true blessing.

26. The "he's not waking up very easy" baby at the Convention Center died?
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 04:39 PM by Pirate Smile
Is that what they just said on MSNBC in David Shuster's taped piece?

It was a white woman with a baby at the convention center - they showed them repeatedly - she looked hot and worn out and said "look, he's not waking up very easy".

One time she was saying "this isn't about white people or black people or rich people or poor people, it is just about people".

Did anyone just see that? I thought that was what they said.

edit to add - I see another thread - Yes, the baby died.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4783334

32. I was hoping some other people were also watching MSNBC.
Tweety has an early show on and he was speaking to David Shuster and Shuster had a taped piece.

That was what I thought they said but I was also putting groceries away so I just wanted to confirm that they said what I thought they said.

There are truly no words. Right now I am going through having my grown adopted son (in his own words, "my big ol' used baby") dying, and my heart just weeps for desperate mothers who can do nothing to save their children.

That poor mother at the Convention Center was the epitome of desperation and despair. There is no reason on this earth why that baby had to die.

How is it a nation watched this mother beg for help and she not get it?? It's 2005 and the press flew down and sloshed their way about NO but the agency created to streamline the process of responding to a national crisis was too tangled up with bureaucratic bullshit to move decisively. If we saw it, they saw it - never forget that, no matter what the hell comes from their sham of an investigation.

90. I remember that poor mother
she was so hot, holding the baby and begging for help! A black man standing behind her, kindly straightened out her hat! I remember thinking how kind he was, to worry about her like that!!

And CNN is worried about this president's IMAGE?? Of what importance is he? He's a danger to humanity!!

There are no words to describe the anger I feel towards all of them. We know they murdered Iraqi children, and hid it from the American people, but I have never forgotten little Ali, whose arms and legs were blown off by Bush's bombs, and whose whole family, including his pregnant mom, were killed in their apartment when this criminal administration bombed their city!! And he kept crying from pain because there was no medicine in the hospital, and calling for his mom!!

Why is there not more outrage, here, from the world?

A baby was crushed to death in the Convention Center also, because people panicked when a building nearby blew up!! How many babies died while he and his vile administration partied and shopped?

I don't think I can stand to listen to him tonight ~ I'll wait for the lies to appear in a transcript.

Those poor parents, they will never, ever get over this ~

I haven't heard anything about those babies. They looked healthy compared to the baby who wouldn't wake up - who died.

I was just thinking of which people I specifically remember because I saw them on TV multiple times. I also thought of the black woman holding the triplets.

I also think of the elderly lady who kept dabbing her face with a rag or handkerchief.

I don't mean to take any blame from the idiot inhabiting the White house, but is there a reason why the reporters on the scene couldn't have given the baby a bottle of water and/or helped her? Sorry if this has been answered, but as a reporter and writer myself, I have little patience for those who stand by and report when they could be saving a life.

Poor baby, poor babies, poor mamas and dads - I don't know how Bush sleeps at night...but then, he's oblivious, I suppose.

170. By that point, the baby needed medical attention
I'm saying this as a parent, not a doctor, but if you can't rouse a child who is suffering from heat or dehydration it's not something you can treat at home -- just giving water isn't enough, you have to take the child to a hospital for IV fluids and other medical attention. For all we know, the reporters did try to give the baby water, but it just wasn't enough.

I hope this makes sense, it's hard to type while sobbing my eyes out.

104. Just when I think my heart can't break again.
What of the 3 wk old baby held up by that man?

"He doesn't have any formula!" And the tearful young woman, late teens early twenties, reaches out to touch the babe's hand hand.

What of him?

107. Those RWers love the fetus, hate the baby - as Randi would say.
I'm just absolutely disgusted and so sad for that mother. She tried the best that she could. She was waking the baby up at regular intervals, it seemed.

UGH!!!!!! I HATE THIS ADMINISTRATION!!!!!!! That baby did NOT have to die. Those people in NOLA who evacuated to shelters of last resort did not, SHOULD not have died.

There is blood on this administration's hands. It IS a sin to have the power to help someone and to withhold that help. These people were God's children. Bush should remember that when he meets his Maker.

I can't imagine.
What a contrast to Barbara Bush's insensitive quote about how "it's working out well for them".
I also saw (this morning) an update on that elderly man that MSNBC reporter Kerry Saunders fed in the airport (MRE food). He died as well.

118. Well that's very bad news. I wondered about that baby.
Who will take responsiblity for those babies and people who died because no one came to help them. If that couple in charge of the nursing home are being charged than so should those at the top of this disaster, and you all know the tip top people and it's not the mayor or governor.

This isn't supposed to happen here damn it!

Greatest Country my ass! We can't even save one baby, one little baby from dying from dehydration. This isn't the greatest country, this isn't even a great country anymore. It's a machine now. Something not alive but only runs because it's designed to do so. It runs the way those in charge want it to run. This is a machine, not a country.

125. from Keiths coverage
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Look how hot he is. He is not waking up very easy. I am not—this is not about low income, it‘s not about rich people, poor people. It is about people.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We need help, sir. We really do. We need help. They‘re not doing nothing, they‘re not telling us nothing, they‘re not doing nothing.

Look at all of these old people (INAUDIBLE) without their medication, their wheelchairs. We need help, sir. We really need help.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Look at these babies. These babies (INAUDIBLE).

This is not right. This is not right.

He's the little boy who looked right into the camera and said "how bad it is out here". The child spoke about how people were dying and how he didn't want to end up like that. KO is going to cover what happened to Charles. Let it be good news. Please!

143. Was that the little boy in the "Spongebob" shirt?
He was taken in by relatives along with his Gramma. But his great Aunt died. I gather he witnessed it.

His relatives found him at the computer writing her obituary. One line - "I will never forget the kindness of her face."

Oh what a dear sweet child that had to grow up too soon.

What about those 2000 postal workers?! I am so LIVID I can't see straight right now! :grr:

the government for a policy, but you can sue them if they were neglect in administering the policy. Especially after that pompous ass, Brown said that the federal Government did nothing wrong.

So incredibly sad...

This may be one happy ending!

I don't blame MSNBC for reporting wrong. They may have confused another baby that died with Lee B's little boy. After all, other children have perished. And so many children have been separated form their families.

She still looks wiped out. Two weeks in a shelter and it sounds like those are crazy too.

166. Thank you for posting that. I am so relieved!
I have been wondering what happened to them. I was so afraid the child might not make it because he seemed to be in rather dire straits when they were at the Convention Center. I was really worried about him. Whew! He made it! He and his mother fought back against Dubya's complete indifference and won. The kid really beat the odds there.

I'd also like to thank the OP for starting this thread. I had been thinking about starting a similar thread for the past few days but never got around to it because I guess would have felt bad if the post wound up informing everyone that the kid didn't make it. Yeah, we deserve to know but damn, that still would have been tough to hear. I'm soooo glad I was wrong about that.
