A most unexpected reaction to the speech tonight (TX)
I live in the heart of the district where Bush* made his once-upon-a-time Congressional run---90+% in 2004 for Bush*.

I was dreading being at my office during the speech knowing that someone in the building would be watching (miss God's own special friend with a message? hah, they wouldn't dare). I managed to follow it on DU and stay out of the halls and the conference room.

Imagine my surprise a little while ago when two Bushbots were arguing about what "pissed" them off most:
Bushbot 1: "socialist agenda and give aways"
Bushbot 2: HIGHLY indignant about "reimbursing churches" for charity work---if them, why not him? (!)
They argued about which was worse and then decided that it was an INSULT to THEM (and I guess the rest of us) that "after they donated their hard earned money" Bush* is going to pay states, churches, and "the poor" but the "rest of us got stuck for contributions"

They left bitching mightily about his call for Red Cross contributions---what that was precisely about was not clear but it seems one of the two has a major interest in one of the other major charities working on relief and has decided that Bush* is "pushing" the RC and "no one else!"

Basically, I never thought I would see these two SO majorly and insanely angry at God's own gift to America. They thought the list lame and ....."like Teddy Kennedy wrote it!!!!" But, they really, oddly for two outspoken fundamentalists who want *more* "faith based" aid from the government were NOT happy about the *idea* that charity should be reimbursed---and, of course, if it is, THEY should have been "warned" before they donated.

I just don't think this speech really went over terribly well in many unexpected quarters.

1. Well, Bush's work is done.
Couldn't have done a better job pissing off Republicans myself.

4. Check earlier threads, Bush jumped the shark according to those
people. The conservatives, moderates, the fundies, etc, are all over the place. There are too many good, threads, have fun!

8. marvelous! I was afraid to check
I was delighted with the train wreck I heard on campus but feared that it might be a peculiar abberation. The reimbursement surprisingly pissed of the most religious of the two! Interesting.

Well, I'll visit the other threads and calm my nerves

5. The other "Major Charities" "on the ground" are all "Faith based"
They left bitching mightily about his call for Red Cross contributions---what that was precisely about was not clear but it seems one of the two has a major interest in one of the other major charities working on relief and has decided that Bush* is "pushing" the RC and "no one else!"

While the American Red Cross was founded by the (horror of horrors) Unitarians.

6. You should REALLY fuck their shit up tomorrow and tell them
that in 2003, bush okayed giving THREE BILLION DOLLARS TO CHURCHES.

Now what the hell was THAT money being used for?

Who knows, no accountability whatsoever.

7. KKKarl has lost his touch.
More's the pity. **cough** He's so busy worrying about the indictments he's about to face that he can't focus on pacifying the very people who already blindly worshipped the little twit. That's just pathetic.

Works for me!

9. Holy cow! 90+% in 2004 for Bush*
First you get a hug for not having killed anyone yet. Now I understand why your perspective is so different than mine when it comes to the locals. Your's are almost 30% worse. You should be getting hazard pay from the DNC. :)

I told the people I was with that bush* was going to tick off some people with that money going back to churches stuff. Conservative Texans may love their churches, but they love their money way more.

I plan on taking my local pulse on this tomorrow. I can't wait to see how many of them are having fits.

14. I think he's distracted
It's being rumored that Judith Miller is going to testify. That may well be taking the better part of his attention away.

Even if he's 100% this isn't the kind of thing Rove is good at. He can do rumors and spin things that Americans can't really see (ie Iraq war), but he can't deal with the in your face reality that has been shown since Katrina.

13. Xanax baby, xanax
that's what makes some days possible. What people openly say is just bizarre to me. Opinions are one thing but hey, when is the last time you heard someone *politely* and formally using the term "colored people?" Its like 1950 sometimes out here in red, red west Texas.

And, yes, my neighbors and colleagues ALL want money for their churches to run "social services that are faith based" but they:
1. don't want the sort of churches they *don't* like to get it too
2. reimbursing churches when their members donated to relief seemed to flip a switch in my gang this evening---seemed to be both insulted and being cheap at the same time

but, contradictory opinions being held at the same time? Hah, they are masters at it.

15. I get the same thing, just not as much of it
Many of my locals are true conservatives and some have had second thoughts prior to this. Where I live a large block of the population are retired and his plans for SS was a major turn off.

He just can't win for losing this year. I wonder if he could be persuaded to do a weekly prime time TV address? As much as I hate to listen to him I've grown fond of the results. :D

10. They're right about one thing: churches should not be reimbursed
How is it charity if you get reimbursed? More faith-based bullshit.
