My letter to Sen. Landrieu |
|
I am writing from a different email address - writek7@yahoo.com - because Tulane's server is currently down. Also, that phone number will receive messages but I can't access it now. I am currently traveling through Texas.
I want to comment you for your actions and words in the aftermath of the hurricane, particularly how you initially stood up to Mr. Bush and chastised him for his dereliction of duty. He is responsible for the deaths and the destruction in the city, because of his decisions to cut funding for the levees and marshlands beforehand and his indifference during and after the storm.
I was very disappointed, therefore, to read of your reaction to his speech. You were quoted as follows: "The president picked a very inspiring spot to make this speech. The image is worth many words in terms of what Jackson Square and the cathedral mean to New Orleans and what New Orleans means to the nation. ... His three proposals are innovative and bold.'' -- Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.
Anyone can put together a dramatic performance - an appropriate setting, proper costume, focus-group honed words. The speech might have gotten decent reviews from the theater critics, but the hypocrisy was so blatant, it should have been trumpeted. Instead, there's a tone of kiss and make up. That does a disservice to the tens of thousands of displaced Louisianians, and is disrespectful of the dead.
As you have in the past proven yourself a capable representative of Louisiana, willing to stand up to those who would lie to us and cheat us and steal from us, I hope the above was but a momentary lapse and you will return to "fighting form."
Sincerely

2. Isn't she just doing what she has to do as a Senator from LA? |
|
First and foremost she represents the people of LA and if Bush is promising to give them everything they need, why would she criticize that? Now, if they don't deliver that would be an entirely different story, but for now she is trying to help the people of her own state, her number one job.

I know she has to do what she can for the citizens of the state. But she could have been cautious or skeptical, and not effusive. At least, non-committal.

I guess I should have looked for her entire statement before commenting.

The other Landrieu was fawning all over dubby too. I can understand that they need to suck up to receive consideration, but geez, the knuckster was a week late and in his speech condensed it to a few days.
