Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) says Bush should resign
http://www.fresnobee.com/lifestyle/story/11226908p-11977607c.html

By Mike Osegueda / The Fresno Bee

... The enigmatic Reznor, who rarely gives interviews, took some time Wednesday morning to talk about the tour, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and his relationship with his fans.

... Q: Let's talk about New Orleans real quick. You lived and recorded there for a long time, so how did you react when you first heard about the hurricane?

A: ... I don't mean to get on my soapbox. I honestly don't know how many more glaring, crystal clear examples of incompetence and criminal negligence and greed and inhumanity and racism we can see from this administration before we do something about it.

I just saw Bush, "I take responsibility." Well, resign then. Hundreds of people's lives, you killed them, and you killed a city because you put your friends in office. Your transparent agenda is crystal-clear.

You can hide behind your homophobia and round people up behind your Bible, which is just a ploy to get your corporate buddies richer and the poor poorer. Then you see people dying on the rooftops.

Then what was "Bite the Hand that Feeds" about?

Love NIN and Trent...but I have taken (perhaps misplaced) political insight into his music (as well as insight into other subjects that are all too human as well.)

and yes I agree with him.

3. God bless that man.
One of the undisputed musical geniuses of our time.

4. Undisputed?
The man's a bloated egomaniac.
OK,OK. He's a musical genius despite that. I guess that is indisputable. Just wish it wasn't.

As for the recent crisis, the man's a sometime-resident of the Crecent City, so he's got more right to speak out than most people.

7. Ever met any "Rock God's"?
Bloated egomaniac could describe many. At least he isn't so self-absorbed that he has become a sociopath.

9. Um... actually, yes.
I'm a music journalist and a former venue roadie. I've met quite a few of them. And, admittedly, you're right about that describing a lot of them.

For the record, though, you can't "become" a sociopath. You're born that way. It's a personality disorder. Though, certainly, one's upbringing can influence the extent of the sociopathic behavior.

15. Former music journalist/photographer/music news editor here
You'd think they might wear a little humility when they know their words will end up in print, but, erm, no.

There are, as you said, varying degrees or extent to sociopathic behavior. It is all rooted in a very childish view of being the center of the universe and nothing or no one else matters but them. Very Bush-like:)

20. I met Trent - was on the tour bus with him and Ministry.
You can describe Al Jourgenon as an egomaniac, well probably just a guy who's always high and likes to talk about himself a lot. Trent was rather quiet and polite. I didn't see anything egomaniacal about him. I think he's actually a self-loathing perfectionist - hence the trip to rehab. Nice guy though.

6. Unfortunately, and this is my opinion, only when he's strung out
It's been downhill since The Downward Spiral

8. Isn't it ironic
That the man's personal life gets better but his music gets worse.

Just the opposite of Brian Wilson.

11. Pretty standard, I think.
The best music is usually created by:

a) people whose lives are very screwed up.
AND/OR
b) people who are on multiple extremely dangerous drugs.

17. Many of the very best die very young for that reason.
You know the list.

There is a very thin line between genius and insanity. It's hard to be different; I think the drugs take that edge off.

Some of the best music of any genre has come from pain. The empathy it creates in listeners can make stars out of those experiencing mental anguish.

Sorry.

10. I wouldn't say "blows", but it's not his best work.
Then again, he did say he was trying to get closer to his work on "Pretty Hate Machine", which you have to admit he did accomplish pretty well.

12. I'd say it's NIN's second-worst album...
It doesn't top Things Falling Apart for general suckitude. In fact, NIN's albums have been getting progrssively worse since the first album.
These days, it's all Reznor can do to maintain some semblance of relevance in a music scene that has mostly forgotten aggro-industrial. The whirls and clanks and hammer-on-anvil sounds seem rather quaint.

14. Nah, the Fragile was much worse.
It sounded like The Downward Spiral Pt. 2, only twice as long and half as compelling.

I rather like With Teeth, though the second half is patchy.

18. I have to agree
the fragile was the bottom. I actually really like the new album. Hated it at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. It's just that you have to listen to the lyrics as well on this album. Lyrically I quite like it. More adult themes, phrased beautifully and ironically, and unfortuanatly very true to some of us.

21. If you go back and listen to The Fragile you'll find it pretty darned good
much better than the new one. You could get rid of about 6 songs on the new one and you'd have half a good album. The Collector? What kind of crap is that?

22. Every day is exactly the same
has some great lyrics. I do agree the Collector sucks, along with Getting Smaller. He's always had stinky bombs on his albums though, IMHO. The only albums I like through and through are the remix albums Closer and Further Down the Spiral.

23. The Collector rocks.
One of the best songs on the album.

I liked We're In This Together, but the Fragile was slow and boring. The atmosphere outweighed the worthwhile songs.

I defy you to listen to the whole thing through in one sitting.
