"When he finally stopped, he got ... the loudest applause of the summit."
UNITED NATIONS - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took President Bush to task in front of a global summit for waging war in Iraq without U.N. consent and won rousing applause for his critique. The leftist leader told a U.N. summit on Thursday that fighting the war without U.N. authorization showed Washington did not respect the world body. He recommended moving U.N. headquarters to a country that has more regard for the organization.

<clip>

World leaders at the summit had been asked to speak for five minutes but Chavez ran long and when the presiding diplomat passed him a note saying his time was up, he threw it on the floor. He said if Bush could speak for 20 minutes, so could he.

<clip>

Chavez singled out the United States as the most wasteful country, saying he was shocked when a quarter of all the cars he counted Thursday morning on New York streets had one person in them. -- ((if he walked my route to work in Seattle the number would have been at least 60 % of all the vehicles having but one driver.))

"That's crazy, one person with a huge car ... that is using up gas and polluting the atmosphere," he said at a news conference. "The world cannot tolerate this model of development called the American way of life."

What President Chavez could also have noted is the fact that many of the non-commercial vehicles being driven in America would be luxury homes for billions of folk on the planet (including those living on the streets of the USA).

Wonder why our corporate media didn't carry this speech, live or otherwise. It certainly contains the messages and demonstrates the type of leadership this Nation needs.

I've written numerous letters in the past several years urging that the UN be located in Jerusalem. And, it is interesting to see the way the AP report is 'headlined' by some news organizations:

Peace.

2. Way to put Bush in his proper place in the world:
<snip>
"he threw it on the floor. He said if Bush could speak for 20 minutes, so could he."

If the world body is forced to listen to 20 minutes of the idiot son, then everyone else should get equal time as a reward for sitting through it.

was NOT sugar five years ago. This country has been working on the theme of "Empire" for many decades -- it has peaked during *'s reign, but the trajectory was set long ago.

" are perhaps not so much immoral as they are amoral. It's not that they take pleasure in causing so much death and suffering. It's that they just don't care ... the same that could be said about a sociopath. As long as the death and suffering advance the agenda of the empire, as long as the right people and the right corporations gain wealth and power and privilege and prestige, as long as the death and suffering aren't happening to them or people close to them ... then they just don't care about it happening to other people, including the American soldiers whom they throw into wars and who come home-the ones who make it back alive-with Agent Orange or Gulf War Syndrome eating away at their bodies. American leaders would not be in the positions they hold if they were bothered by such things."

I'm sure that all the stations here in No. Virginia are serviced by the same pipeline (Colonial), but Chavez has pledged money and cheap gas to those people devastated by Katrina. Ergo, CITGO gets my money.

Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 12:04 PM by understandinglife
In a speech to the U.N. world summit, he also said the United States had failed its own people in its response to Hurricane Katrina, accused Washington of fueling terrorism and faulted it for its doctrine of pre-emptive military strikes.

<clip>

Chavez branded the plan "illegal" for failing to respect anti-poverty goals set by a U.N. summit in 2000 and said the United Nations instead needed drastic overhaul. "The United Nations has outlived its model. It's not just a question of bringing about reform. The 21st century requires profound changes," he said.

Among changes he advocated were expansion of the 15-nation U.N. Security Council, which has global authority over matters of international peace and security; strengthening the role of the secretary-general, and eliminating the council veto granted the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France.

Chavez noted bitterly that U.S. television evangelist Pat Robertson, a strong supporter of President George W. Bush who called for Washington to assassinate him, remained a free man. .... "This is an international crime, terrorism," Chavez said.

42. Thanks so much for this report, understandinglife! Do we know of
any good web site that recorded it and will make it available?

-----

"The whole world does know ... and I think most Americans do, as well.// What we do about Bush and the neoconsters and about our profligate destruction of the environment, are all that will matter."

-----

What we do about it. Such an important statement! A lot people still don't realize that we CAN do something about it, and it's very simple, although not easy, given the corruption involved...

We need...

Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least...

Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% automatic recount, very strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

-----------

In Venezuela, they have electronic voting, but with OPEN SOURCE CODE! That's the critical difference.

Open source code = good president.
Secret, proprietary source code = bad president.

Simple.

But with Democrats involved in the corruption of the Diebold/ES&S electronic voting boondoggle (and who permitted "trade secret" vote tabulation under the control of Bushite companies to be written into the state contracts--often without even a "paper trail" for recounts and audits)--not easy.

We MUST fix this, though. We MUST. Our democracy depends upon it!

------------

I used to follow opinion polls on the environment. They were amazing. 80% to 90% of those polled wanted strong environmental protection--even as our environmental protections and regulations were being assaulted and dismantled by our Corporate Rulers.

Same with the war. 58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war before the invasion. Feb. 03. Before all the lies were exposed; before the full horror of it was known. Across the board in all polls. 58%!

That number dipped only once, during the few weeks of the invasion with U.S. troops at max risk, then went right back up to nearly 60%. Now it's over 70%.

The American people never supported this war. Never!

Same with torture. Same with Social Security. Same with the deficit. Same with women's rights. The great majority of Americans oppose every major Bush policy, foreign and domestic, way up in the 60% to 70% range.

The environment WOULD BE PROTECTED if the majority of Americans were being represented in our government. We would have long ago been on an accelerated program of conversion to alternative fuels, and all sorts of other conservation programs, if we had decent leadership. Just ask Americans ANYTHING for the common good, and they WILL do it! (I remember this from the drought crisis in California many years ago--the state asked us to conserve water; everybody got into it, draining swimming pools, converting lawns to native plants, putting bricks in toilets, and inventing water-conserving widgets and, within weeks, the water crisis was over! Over! It was incredible!)

We CAN and WILL elect good leaders, and we CAN and WILL gladly cooperate with good policies designed in the public interest--but first we have to recover our right to vote!

http://webcast.un.org/ramgen/ga/summit2005/worldsummit050915pm.rm?start=%2202:11:00%22&end=%2202:33:30%22

And, I agree that the one objective we must achieve is a voting system that provides equivalent access to cast a ballot to all our citizens and that those ballots must be counted as the voter intended. My mantra is simple -- "not one line of software between a voter and a valid election."

Peace.

36. I've toyed with this notion over the years.
I'm inclined, despite the obvious problems, to think that making Jerusalem an International City-State (very roughly akin to the Vatican) and placing the Headquarters of the United Nations and World Court there might create far more good than bad - if only in the elevation of such thinking. Continued "Eurocentrism" or "Americentrism" does not seem to be wise, given the global hegemonistic history of each. Continuing to "throw bones" to the G8 "have-more" countries is a corrupting influence, imho.

But going to Bangkok, Beijing, or Singapore, maybe.

Since Israel is a creation of Americo- and Euro-centrism, setting out a protected reservation for the Jews, a move to Jerusalem doesn't represent an escape from that centrism, as far as I'm concerned.

61. I think the main reason is to prevent another world war
With the exception of the United States, a country that spends more than all other countries combined on defense, there are no major countries at war right now. When people have health care and enough to eat, they are less likely to want to go to war.

So the UN has been a success so far.

I don't think putting the UN in China would enhance its mandate.

39. OK, everything about this was beautiful until the part about moving
the UN to Jerusalem. I'm not a fundamentalist by any stretch, but I do know my Bible. The UN in Jerusalem is about the scariest end times thing I've heard in a while.

and to some degree i am considered "fundamentalist" in my Christian beliefs

not to argue your point though
that could be part of things but im just struck with how the world seems to be hurtling towards a big fireball just based on this crime family

on edit: a big shout out of support for hugo chavez - from the little i know he does sound right on
