What is it with Fundies "Praying ON" things? |
|
Just had a conversation with my Fundie neighbor. She was telling me about how her house foundation, made of brick, is crumbling and will be too expensive for her to fix. Her solution....she and her Pastor are "PRAYING ON AN EARTHQUAKE" to take down her house so that she can get the insurance.
First off - how demented is it that so called Christians are calling for their God to bust out an earthquake in Portland, OR - one of the most earthquake vulnerable cities in the country, not to mention on my fucking street!
But most importantly, what's with all of the Fundies "Praying ON" things. Don't they get the implication of praying on/preying on? Are they really that stupid, or is there something I'm not getting here?
Well...these are the same people who say that they live in "Amurrika", so maybe I've answered my own question.
Has * ever busted out with this phraseology? I do feel like he is "Preying On Amurrika", but I don't think I've ever heard him say it that way.
They can pray on whatever they want, I guess, but just leave me and my house the hell out of it. I don't have earthquake insurance, and I doubt she does either. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

but it is pretty much a southern/western colloquialism.
Maybe akin to "sleep on it?"
But I will have to admit.. I love words and I never saw the "pray/prey" connection until you pointed it out!

So it's not specifically a Fundie thing? I've lived primarily in the West all my life, and I've only heard super conservative fundies say it that way. Is it a southern/rural thing?

2. They pray for earthquakes, Pat Robertson prays for the death of a judge |
|
Its disgusting, but it really reveals who self-absorbed the supposed "Christian" right is...

3. It's because their somewhat insane interpretation is that they are |
|
not supposed to pray 'for' things to happen -- what happens is god's will, and they don't want to pray in opposition to god's will, so instead they pray 'on' things.
Kind of like what the definition of 'is' is.
No matter how you cut it, it's bad theology, and it comes, I believe, straight from Pat Robertson.

10. Funny story about my dad |
|
While at work a lady told my father her son had an upset stomach and she was praying for her son to get better. My dad asked if she really thought god cared if her son has an upset stomach? Don't you think god has better things to take care of? About a month later she tells my father "you know what I think you are right".

"Praying on it" is also a good way to duck responsibility. My MIL, when confronted about her vote for * by my husband, said that she knew * was making bad decisions, and she was praying on it, but she was voting for him anyway. Meanwhile her grandkids are going to be saddled with astronomical debt and this stupid war because she and others like her could not deal with voting for Kerry, even thought they knew he was a better choice.
Also, anytime something goes halfway right, it is "thank you Jesus". Again, taking no responsibility for actions and results.

13. They think god is an ignorant fool |
|
think about it. They think god is so dumb, and unaware, that if they go to church and mumble a few words they can fool him into thinking they are "god fearin" people. On the other hand they think if aunt mabel prays for an earthquake, he will create it because he is so insecure and needy of worship, and adoration, that he only aims to please. I have heard we percieve god as we see ourselves. It doesn't say much for 'murca does it?

15. I think they are just plain afraid. |
|
Fear seems to rule this woman's life, and she seems completely trapped by it. I honestly think that she just wishes that God would just take her now - she can't be older than 60. It's really sad. I just wish she wouldn't bring my uninsured ass into it! Not that I think that any God would answer those kinds of prayers.

|
and pretty damned stupid too. What if God grants her prayer request and she in the darned house when the earthquake happens and it like an 8.5? That one stooopid lady and one stoooopid preacher.
