On Roberts, let him on, but NOT as chief justice
I'm wondering if a seemingly reasonable route for Dems to go is to say they'll let Roberts on if Bush picks someone already on the bench for Chief Justice.

Because Bush will clearly be remembered as our worst and most corrupt president, having his nominee as chief justice will be an embarrassment to our country for decades to come. Therefore, he should choose from among those already onthe bench.

This is something probably even republicans could get behind--just ask them if they want to lash themselves to Bush's sinking ship.

1. The Dems have already voted him on as CJ. They just haven't
signed the paper yet. Anyone who doesn't think this is a done deal hasn't een paying attention. Didn't you see Shumer on any talk show yesterday? It is a done deal.

5. Even Cheney is scared of Judge Scarface.
Scalia would be very very very bad for the judicary as CJ, but then again he is scary as a SCOTUS judge all the time.

6. Thomas or Scalia as Chief Justice?
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 10:20 PM by VADem11
Heck no. The chief justice doesn't wield an enormous amount of power and I'd rather see Roberts replace a rock solid conservative than Sandra Day O'Conner. It's inevitable that Bush will get 2 conservative justices. Just let Roberts become Chief Justice with some solid opposition and save the fight in order to force Bush to get a less wacko conservative to replace O'Conner. Either way, we're going to get two conservative justices no matter what.

9. "save the fight" the dumb fucking idea that is killing dems & democracy
"fight" is not a finite quantity you are going to run out of--in fact, if you use it, like a muscle, you get more. You definitely get more than if you are publicly seen as only working the angles rather than standing for principle.

Ironically, the things Dems seem to fear the most, being seen as partisan, is precisely what the public wants--we want someone to be partisan for US.

7. I would much rather see Roberts as Chief
Rather than Scalia--Roberts seems polite and personable in public.

Scalia foams at the mouth and has to be restrained regularly.
Thomas? --you want long dong running the farm?

and he aint't gonna pick one of the others... Just remember there is in this pick as chief, going to be a festering seething hate from Scalia that he was not picked---I am looking forward to them fighting each other while we can be quiet in the corner and watch the Rightwing explode from inside.

10. 'We' have no choice in the matter. he will get enough votes
The best that could happen would be for kenedy or someone to just call a press conference and say..enough dog and pony show. He;s not talking or telling us anything we need to know, and the repuves will vote hin in over our minority objections anyway..and then all the dems just get up and leave,, let the repubes have their little lovefest..and of course NO dem should vote for his approval in the senate..someone may have to sit on Lieberman's pointy little head..
