So does he really have proof that they're trying to kill him? It wouldn't surprise me (see Saddam Hussein).

point that Chavez is the ELECTED president, was in my mind a major improvement over the general corporate media line of b.s. about Chavez.

I expect the SCLM to distort and lie and shovel snark and disinfo about him. They have not disappointed so far, but they AT LEAST made the point that Chavez has won two elections as president.

Implied that he is just like Castro.

Yes. The hit piece has begun.

5. First MAJOR distortion: "Venezuelan army ousted him in 2002 coup"
BULLSHIT! The regular army protected him and brought him back. The white elites and *some* officers fomented the coup.

8. The setup compared Chavez to Castro
and called him the "Leftist Strongman."

For those who don't remember, Noiega's middle name was "Strongman." Been there, done that. Same language from the same tools.

It's horrible, and it makes him seem weak. Why couldn't they just add subtitles and let him articulate and show his passion?

By the way, is Koppel sweating? =P

21. Ted Hairpiece confirms it
paraphrasing ...

if the US does not attack Venuzeula, will you continue to provide oil for our greedy appetite?

reminds me of Koppel's comments to Kucinich during the debates.. 'why are you here?"

as often as ted shoots his own feet, i'm suprised he even walks anymore.

22. Well, at least Nightline gave Chavez a platform.
Goddess knows how heavily edited this interview was, of course. But it was really a treat to see Chavez on TV -- I especially love how he chuckled about the ridiculous "harboring Al Qaeda" horseshit.

He gave an excellent, imho, explanation of "revolution" too. I really admire his mind.

24. ABC edited Hugo's last comments
KOPPEL: Mr. President, on that happy note, let me thank you. You've been most generous with your time and it's been a pleasure talking to you.

Thank you very much indeed.

CHAVEZ (THROUGH TRANSLATOR):Let me thank you.

I would like to greet you, and I hope you can come to Venezuela. Let me invite you and let us greet the entire people of the United States.

Tomorrow I'm going to take a walk through some of the neighborhoods of New York. We're going to a church to see Jesse Jackson (inaudible). And then I'm going to play a baseball game on the field with some Yankees (ph).

We love the people of the United States, and our desire is to have a world of brothers in peace. God grant that that be the case.

Thank you.

KOPPEL: Thank you, sir.

END

27. Chavez wanted to play professional baseball.
IIRC, he joined the army because it would pay for him to go to a school where he thought he could play baseball and then go pro.

I might have that story mixed up. It's in the book that's available at Amazon.com.

30. Thanks for posting that!
The local station here cut it off right after Koppel said thank you -- no coverage of Chavez' reply -- before they went to a commercial. They didn't even cut back for the final announcement about upcoming shows.
