We NEED another Moveon.org
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 10:42 AM by Podface
I believe that a message of needed accountability is the biggest weapon we have. Moveon.org is a spectacular example of how the Internet can be utilized to raise funds and get the message across.

An internet mailing list and the ability of simple and small organizations to raise funds to broadcast ads is a powerful tool. There is room for more. Many more.

Like many have said here, it's hard to do enough. But, with small donations from many, a real impact can be achieved.

I work in entertainment, so I'll give you a run down.

Buying cable ads is a lot less expensive than you think when you do it regionally.

- Raleigh NC - 230,000 cable subscribers.
- 30 second ad (6pm - Midnight) on CNN- $60.
- 77,000 DU registers.
- 5% of subscribers - 3,850
- 3,850 X $10 = 38,500
- 38,500 / $60 = 641 Ads in markets of +200,000 people.
- Bonus ads usually add at least 50% to the ad buy.
- Around 1,000 ads can run if 5% of DUers donated 10 bucks.

Now consider this. If an organization were to slam a couple markets, how much national press could be achieved?

BTW - ad production cost is Zero. It would take about a week to get 100 submission. Today's technology rules.

Now, is this place all talk???

Will you vote this up to see if we DUers can make this happen ourselves?

2. I've often thought that our side could be running many more ads
on the teevee. It's such an effective way to reach people who aren't political information junkies.

4. The last thing we need is ANOTHER moveon.org
We have too many groups already (many of them single issue) that split the available money, and therefore limit their effectiveness. We need better organization among the groups, or one powerhouse that can raise money, and fill the airwaves with our message, and with information on what the Bush administration/Republicans are up to.

9. I disagree
An indie can accomplish a lot. One organization that does nothing but buy ads, collect a mailing list, and take donations.

Smart marketing and a single message.

We could use this forum to work out the details, find the people to make it happen.

10. Too many single issue DUers, IMO
not necessarily a negative thing. No one organization can represent all DUers. Hell, not even a single presidential candidate is supported by everyone here.

7. Good Luck On Herding Cats
The great thing about DU is how excited and electric this place is. No place is on top of so much that's going on in this place.

That's also it's biggest problem. The attention span in this place is like that of a fruitfly and add to that the personalities, cliques, trolls and other distractions and it's hard to do much more than read and follow threads here and take your shots where you can.

I like your idea, and from one with an extensive communications background, I've marveled at how MoveOn and AAR have been able to grow and prosper. Yes, there is a definite place to spread these messages, and for a long time I've hoped to see more of a local effort and people interested in taking back the airwaves on a local basis. DU just isn't the place to try to coordinate that.

I'd strong suggest you post this in the Media forum, then set up a seperate blog or website where people can come to away from DU. Good luck...here's hoping you have some success in reaching people with your idea.

11. Go to Takebackthemedia.com
and have a look, been making video/flash doing ads for years now on donations..

if MoveOn would just free me up with some loose change I could beat the shit out of the right wing..

But they aren't radical enough sadly and they get too many issues going at the same time..computer geeks (and I like them, don't get me wrong) and conservative in nature really..

I like to kick ass and put the right wing into a spin with what I call "Rovian Moments", like my ARMY OF ONE ad/flash that they couldn't deny without looking like they don't support the troops..

Got to show ARMY OF ONE on the Scarborough show before the Winner of the MoveOn Bush in 30 seconds went national :)

I've actually been BROKE for about a year now and may have to quit all this and get a freaking JOB, sorry to say.. and that's how they win..

Good ideas tho, I could tell you exactly how to beat them and unite the progressives but without money I guess I'll just have to sit back and watch the cats herd each other :)

14. They are NOT the green party
PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS does not equal green! Yes, they sometimes work across party lines on issues but that's a strength, not a weakness! The Utah Democratic Progressive Caucus has a donkey that is red and I can assure you they are no where close to republican.
