Clinton, Blair slap BBC for Katrina coverage...
snip:
Bill Clinton, the former US president, and Sir Howard Stringer, chief executive of Sony Corporation, also criticised the tone of the BBC's coverage during a seminar on the media at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York.

Mr Murdoch said Mr Blair was in New Delhi when he turned on the BBC coverage of New Orleans: "He said it was just full of hatred of America and gloating at our troubles."

Mr Clinton said the corporation's coverage had been "stacked up" to criticise the federal government's slow response.

Sir Howard, a former head of CBS News, said he had been "nervous about the slight level of gloating" in the BBC coverage.

Mr Clinton invited Sir Howard and Mr Murdoch to discuss the media in a global economy as part of a three-day gathering.

Mr Murdoch referred to Mr Blair's remarks during a discussion of US foreign aid. The tycoon chuckled: "I probably shouldn't be telling you this" before recounting his conversation with Mr Blair.

4. I have to ask Mr. Clinton if the BBC should have been praising..
the federal governments slow response. What has happened to him. Having Murdoch to discuss the media in a global economy, what is that all about.

Nothing bothers these guys more than the truth.

"Weapons expert Dr David Kelly was thrust into the media spotlight after being identified in newspapers as the man the government believed was the source for a BBC report on Iraq.

The scientist was used to talking to journalists behind the scenes - but he became a key figure in the row between the government and the BBC over claims that Downing Street "sexed up" a dossier on Iraq's weapons capability.

After being publicly named the 59-year-old told MPs he did not believe he was the story's main source - after admitting to his managers he had met the Today programme's Andrew Gilligan.

Two days after facing MPs he was found dead, after apparently taking his own life. The BBC confirmed on 20 July 2002 that the scientist was their principal contact. "

Now, THAT's American.

Clinton might take note that our government - even now - is not doing that.

the feds. That has nothing to do with HIS taking of notes or of his care for people.

possible a reporter shoved a mike in his face and asked him about it? Reporters often do things like that.

18. Oh, how it pains me to agree with you,
but, yes, he is.

I can never get past his rapid retreat on his promise about gays in the military and his signing the Defense of Marriage Act, a complete slap in the face to the gay and lesbian community which had so wholeheartedly supported him on the basis of his campaign promises.

And I'm not gay.

Betrayal is betrayal. Clinton betrayed everyone, and continues to pose as a caring, compassionate ex-President, even as he's trying to grease the way for his wife, who's also turned out to be a collaborating harpy of the first order.

23. I'm in my Mid 40s. :)
Yes I remember that one-Mrs Robinson-great song!

Though what's been running through my head is the 80s song "Holding out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler (had to look her name up on Google-lol!)

Cause we do need a hero-like yesterday!

At one point, I had thought it might be Kerry...but no more.

Now I turn towards Conyers...

AND

More importantly to

Fitzgerald and the grand jury....

....with fingers and toes crossed! :)

24. This month's Vanity Fair
It has a really good article by Carl Bernstein, about the outing of Mark Felt as "Deep Throat," and how journalism and politics - at least in Washington - have changed since the Watergate days.

He comments on how Novak, instead of "carrying the White House's water" and outing Valerie Plame should have, instead, reported that someone at the White House was trying to get him to write a story her. THAT was the story.

He, like all of us, awaits Fitzgerald's conclusion. But, be ready, because I - and Bernstein - don't think Karl Rove broke any laws.

20. there WERE a few pieces that fairly reeked of bigotry toward us
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 01:05 PM by melody
But on whole, I thought the BBC coverage was balanced. There are the usual suspects, always, who have serious issues of prejudice against Americans, and they no doubt enjoyed watching us all suffer, but that's their individual problem.

22. Here is a link to the BBC coverage page for Katrina.
Perhaps Mr. Clinton is so used to the simpering coverage of this administration in our country that he does not know real news when it hits him in the face. Perhaps he needs to make some new buddies, and distance himself from the Bush family.

25. Sometimes I wish Bill wouldn't play his passive-aggressive game.
He sang a different tune on Larry King Live.

It pains me to say this, but in some ways he is quite the flip-flopper. On one hand, he defends * and his cronies and then on the other, he criticizes them.

Which is it, Bill?

***Sigh*** If he's not going to advance our cause, then he should just shut up.

26. clinton + murdoch
I'm not sure if the analysis in this article is right, but it would explain why Clinton is cosying up to Murdoch.

http://www.newstatesman.com/200508290004

"Yet, to me, perhaps the most telling bell-wether of the Hillary bandwagon is Rupert Murdoch, who snuggled up to Tony Blair (and vice versa, of course) when he realised in the mid-Nineties that the Tories were going down the chute and that Blair was going to become prime minister. Now, perhaps still seeing the future more cannily than most at 74, he is doing the same with Hillary. Not so long ago his New York Post depicted her as the most loathsome Beelzebub imaginable - not only a "liberal" demon, but female to boot. Last month, however, it switched course and hailed her as "the unlikely warrior" after she called for troop levels in Iraq to be stepped up."

27. It's the Administration Stupid
We live in a country where the media is controlled by huge corporation's like that of Mr. Murdoch. What happened to an independent press? If we had an Independent media they would be SLAMMING the Bush Administration every day on their BULSHIT POLICIES.(Clear Skies initiative,Clean water act.,healthy forest act,Iraq war lies.......just too many to name). We are the most un-imformed country in the world. If you poll the general public, you will find that many of them are clueless about whats going on. (however you will find that they know a lot about Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, and Natalee Holloway........). The U.S. needs a outlet like the BBC to stand up against the worst administration in U.S. History. Mr Clinton, Asking Murdoch to discuss the Global Media is like asking Hitler to talk about human rights. Why did the BBC take a negative outlook on the Katrina response? IT'S THE ADMINISTRATION STUPID!

32. The BBC reporters are heroes, they had one of the saddest reports
I have ever seen on the news. They were boating through the flooded streets of New Orleans when they saw two children sitting outside, the asked the children why they were there and outside of their house. The children said that their mother needed oxygen, her supply had run out and she died in her bed, they couldn't be inside of the house because of the smell. They didn't know what to do they didn't want to leave their mother. The children didn't have food and water but the crew took the children with them back out of the city. The sight of the children seeing their dead mother for the last time still tears me up.
