I pledge allegiance
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 05:45 PM by Tom Yossarian Joad
To the world

And the people which inhabit it.

To help my fellow man.

To love my neighbor.

To protect the weak.

To temper the strong.

To do good.

I pledge Allegiance.

To humility.

To peace.

To understanding,

To acceptance.

To the dream that is America.

1. I love that except the
verb tense in that last phrase... I would prefer that it be present tense. We are still here. We just have a "little" problem with some fascist ass****s running our government.

21. My first reaction was to change "is" to "was". I didn't know at first
that it was originally "was".

We've lost the America we knew.

The America that "was" is what I'd pledge my allegiance to. What "is" America today is not worth the gas that emenates from slime molds.

6. First thing is kick it once and see if many others agree with us
and try to get it on the front page.

We live in a global village today. It's time for change.

14. I just heard "Mercy Now" by Mary Gauthier, and then saw your post -
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 08:40 PM by wildflower
A wonderful respite. Thank you.

...My church and my country could use a little mercy now
As they sink into a poisoned pit
That's going to take forever to climb out
They carry the weight of the faithful
Who follow them down
I love my church and country, and they could use some mercy now

Every living thing could use a little mercy now
Only the hand of grace can end the race
Towards another mushroom cloud
People in power, well
They'll do anything to keep their crown
I love life, and life itself could use some mercy now

Yeah, we all could use a little mercy now
I know we don't deserve it
But we need it anyhow
We hang in the balance
Dangle 'tween hell and hallowed ground
Every single one of us could use some mercy now
Every single one of us could use some mercy now
Every single one of us could use some mercy now

-from "Mercy Now" by Mary Gauthier, from the album Mercy Now; I just heard the song on Laura Flanders' show.

(ON EDIT: For those who are interested, her Web site is http://www.marygauthier.com/ .)

17. Such nice words
but I can't PLEDGE to love my neighbor. I mean I can TRY to love my neighbor, but I'm not going to put my hand over my heart and lie about it.

But the Seminoles are losing and I'm feeling cranky.

22. Attended a few meetings lately where they recited the pledge
and I just couldn't do it. I was amazed when I realized I wasn't the only one. Many had joined me in quietness, or added comments

I pledge allegience to the old flag we had,
of the old united states of america,
for which it stood,
a nation under seige,
divisible..........

25. I'd rather have my kid reciting this....
On Friday, our homework assignment for my 5 year old in Kindergarten was to recite the pledge of allegiance and for us parents to sign a slip that we acknowledge having discussed with our child what the pledge means and why its an important civic duty etc...

My husband and I did so, and yet, because of my issues around the nationalistic fury from the neo-cons....would much rather have this one, and yet I look forward to someday that my child understands the meanings, the true meanings and what's most important...the constitution and kindness to fellow humans and peace.

Why is it an "important civic duty"?
