Who else thinks that New Orleans is going to become Mc Orleans? |
|
I have a feeling that once the rebuilding is done all the local culture that New Orleans is famous for will be washed away to be replaced by a TGIFridays/Applebees faux culture that some corporation tries to create.
Anyone else have the same idea?

It really blows, in case you haven't had your wallet drained there.
We get our dope and hookers a few streets over. That's all.

7. You mean BroadwayLand? |

I don't particularly miss the dope pushers and hookers, but it reeked of a certain hypocrisy the way the champions of "the free market" used Big Government (in the form of zoning changes) to break the contracts of the previous tenants and clear the way for the present tourist trap.

Good for photo-ops and not much else. We'll see the same kind of accountability that rebuilding Iraq has brought. They'll piss through $60 billion and have very little to show for it.

There will be some cosmetic changes to the historic areas but the culture in New Orleans is not FAUX and the locals won't cotton to much change. A Starbucks opened a couple of years ago a block from Cafe Dumonde. Cafe Dumonde is still in business (and will be open again for business very soon) on Decatur; Starbucks ain't nowhere to be found. The Eating Places you refer to can be found 30 minutes in any direction from New Orleans but the city will come back greatly as is. My optimism is bubbling to the surface, but I strongly believe it.

DOUBLE GOSH! There's NOTHING on the planet like spending some time at Cafe Du Monde and having some of their Cafe au Lait (Chicory) and a big plate of beignets *sigh*

The crowd isn't too big and the view of Jackson Square is awesome. Its where the not so drunk cap off their evening of partying. The real drunks are either still sucking down handgrenades on Bourbon or lying in a gutter somewhere. There will be no mcdrinking in the Big Easy.

I've never been found lying in the gutter! Although I have bared my breasts...BUT it was for a bet I SWEAR! ;)
I was very happy to see that Antoine's and Broussard's are okay and will soon open. Oh heck *sigh* Shrimp cardinal in white wine sauce, Crawfish etouffee, poached trout in white wine sauce on a bed of fine spinach with Hollandaise sauce, Salmon Jean Lafitte and Creole cream cheesecake...I'm really hungry now :(
Antoine's make the BEST Bearnaise sauce in the WORLD.
The Quarter will be back to normal in no time, and I bet there'll be a Mardi Gras next year too.
I'm taking off for Dallas, Texas on Tuesday. But I'll be heading over to Lake Charles and my Aunt Kay has promised me on the spot Gumbo Creole *sigh*

Hey, "I'm goin' to DisNOLAnd"..(formerly known as N'Awlins)
(under new management)
So much to see..so much to do.. Your family will remember the trip for years ...
Toxicland...(exciting display..ride in your own hazmat-mobile)
Petro-Village...(an amazing amalgamation of pipes and intricate maze of oil tanks)
Pirates of the French Quarter..(must be "this tall" to enter)
The USS FEMA (fun for the kiddies....must bring own provisions)
Georgie's Fishin' Hole..EVERYBODY catches a fish..no poles necessary..just scoop one up (they're specially trained to float and to be very still for the kiddies)..then run on down to the Fry Shack, and they'll cook it right up for you.. (sponsored by Mobil/Chevron)
Dubya Gump's Wild Shrimp Ride..(fun for young and old..just don't eat the shellfish)
W's Dumbo Gumbo House...featuring glow in the dark oysters, oiled pelican,Texaco Tea, and the house specialty.."all the better to see you" 3-eyed snapper..
Carpetbagger Cafe....featuring a fabulous $10 mini-burger..(freedom fries are only $5 extra) Bottled Iridescent Bayou Water only $4.50..(don't ask for the recipe..it's a secret)
Bab's Oatmeal Hut...Everyone always said she looked like the Quaker Oats guy..Grab up a bowl of steaming hot cajun oatmeal...then Make a RUN for the porta potties..
Beads R Us....Authentic BK beads (before Katrina)..Buy 'em by the handful, or string 'em together for your own souvenir..(Keep away from children..a choking and poison hazard)
Sign up for the GrayLine Tour of "Old N'Awlins"..Respirator and protective clothing included..... Includes a side trip to the Nature preserve (waders included also)..Camera not necessary ...the animals are still "evacuated").. Picture postcards of the former wildlife are available in the gift shoppe at the end of the tour.
And for the finale...don't miss the moonlight cruise across lake Ponchartrain at dusk.....But..be sure to Pick a speedy boat.. the trick is to make it to the other side before the boat disintegrates.. Don't quite make it?? Don't worry..Just grab on to one of the many simulated roofs in the lake, and hang on until the USS FEMA comes to get you..
(changed name from Dieseland, thanks to an astute poster)

Gov't has no money Business will have little interest Insurance will be ghastly expensive They might try over the next couple years until the next hurricane with sea levels starting out a foot higher... Then they'll give up.
Global warming and all that.
New Orleans will not be rebuilt Period.

anchor to what we think about NO. In my visits to NO, when you get beyond the historic district, it pretty much looks like many southern cities. There are of course many older buildings as the city is one of the oldest in North America. And of course the dikes need to be fixed so this will never happen again.
However I worry about where the poor will do. It would be wonderful if they could turn Habitat For Humanity loose replacing their houses.

13. Look at what they're doing: |
|
Mostly, they're just "securing" it with lots of military and trying to keep people away.
This makes no sense if they wanted it rebuilt by and for the people it belonged to before.
