Time: GOP senators looking for a RICH KATRINA CORPSE for estate tax pitch
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 03:27 AM by Nothing Without Hope
This is apparently only in the online edition of Time Magazine, which is too bad - more people should see this. In this age of all spin all the time, I suppose it was inevitable, but this is uniquely shameless and bizarre. It also adds one more item to the long list of awful things GOP Congress people will do to get their way - now it's digging for weeks-old corpses to show that SOMEBODY needed that estate tax repeal for their pathetic, needy heirs.

Seems they haven't found EVEN ONE rich Katrina corpse yet. Too bad they can't do a negotiation that would reflect their true views of human value, say 10,000 poor black corpses equals one rich white corpse. Guess not - those rich GOP donors are priceless. They're still looking. I'm sure we'll hear about it if they finally find a ripe "volunteer character witness" for their estate tax cut pitch.

Looking for a Corpse to Make a Case

Senators look for a wealthy casualty of Katrina as evidence against the estate tax

By MASSIMO CALABRESI
Posted Saturday, Sep. 17, 2005

Federal troops aren't the only ones looking for bodies on the Gulf Coast. On Sept. 9, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions called his old law professor Harold Apolinsky, co-author of Sessions' legislation repealing the federal estate tax, which was encountering sudden resistance on the Hill. Sessions had an idea to revitalize their cause, which he left on Apolinsky's voice mail: " Jon Kyl and I were talking about the estate tax. If we knew anybody that owned a business that lost life in the storm, that would be something we could push back with."

If legislative ambulance chasing looks like a desperate measure, for the backers of repealing the estate tax, these are desperate times. Just three weeks ago, their long-sought goal of repeal seemed within reach, but Katrina dashed their hopes when Republican leaders put off an expected vote. After hearing from Sessions, Apolinsky, an estate tax lawyer who says his firm includes three multi-billionaires among its clients, mobilized the American Family Business Institute, a Washington-based group devoted to estate tax repeal. They reached out to members along the Gulf Coast to hunt for the dead.

It's been hard. Only a tiny percentage of people are affected by the estate tax—in 2001 only 534 Alabamans were subject to it. And for Hill backers of repeal, that's only part of the problem. Last year, the tax brought in $24.8 billion to the federal government. With Katrina's cost soaring, estate tax opponents need to find a way to make up the potential lost income. For now, getting repeal back on the agenda may depend on Apolinsky and his team of estate-sniffing sleuths, who are searching Internet obituaries among other places. Has he found any victims of both the hurricane and the estate tax? "Not yet," Apolinsky says. "But I'm still looking."

Now it seems to me that if they DON'T manage to find a live one - so to speak - this can be used as a nice talking point against them. And if they DO find one, well, I think most Americans would perceive the awfulness of searching for a rich white corpse as a "poster boy" to push a tax cut for the wealthy while thousands of poor black ones are lying there in plain sight rotting. Meanwhile, more poor are dying every day, but they don't care about that. So I think we should keep an eye on this and let people know about it. It really shows what the GOP truly are. I'll bet Conyers would appreciate this, and maybe Keith Olbermann would too. It's a truly revealing and sickening glimpse of the neocon "soul."

2. exactly. That's part of what makes this so bizarre.
Finding a corpse for a talking point. That's GOP politics today. I'm sure they'd fabricate one if they thought they could get away with it. If they get desperate enough, they may still try for that.

4. Hey that's my Senator
And I'm completely ashamed.

Right after the NO flooding happened and Gas shot up so fast, Sessions was on our local news giving an interview. The “reporter” asked him what people should do concerning gas prices and he said “just conserve, just use your smaller vehicle instead of your larger one”. At the time we were waiting in 5 hour gas lines and poorer people were just out of luck basically. I just thought it was so creepy with everything else going on at the time and he said to arrogantly. He’s such a creep.

booted out of office. In his retirement he could take up a hobby he'd always didn't have enough time to enjoy, like mugging little old ladies for their life's savings - oh wait, he gets to try to do that in Congress with the Social Security scam... The story should leave a lasting impression.

"Just use your smaller vehicle instead of your larger one." Geezus.

10. Well, I must say
I am utterly flabbergasted that they have been unable to find a member of the 'estate tax' group who passed up an opportunity to visit that quintessential uberwealthy vacation spot referred to as the post-Katrina Superdome/Convention Center Spa/Retreat.

Like Trent, they were in one of their other homes until the danger passed.

Think they'd go so far as to 'volunteer' one of their own for the cause and plant the body in the flood zone?

of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a corpse of course
That is, of course, unless the corpse is the wealthy Mr. Dead
Go right to the source and ask the corpse
He'll give you the answer that you endorse.
He also favours " Stay The Course".
Talk to Mr. Dead.

Po' folks yakkity yak a streak and waste your time of day
But Mister Dead will never speak unless you have something to say.

A corpse is a corpse, of course, of course,
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking corpse?

Well listen to this.

I am Mister Dead.

the gop would stoop to this. Never in a million years to go tolling through the corpses looking for someone with an estate. My guess is they won't find one since the people with money were able to get the hell out of dodge.

This is really should be something from a black comedy. Hell maybe they will end up faking a corpse "lady we have to drown you in order to make a case for the estate tax - it's for the cause"

47. they will absolutely find one and prob. several
i stand amazed that most ppl outside the region still remain completely unaware of the widespread devastation to the region

among the affected areas are the mississippi gulf coast, including wealthy areas of long beach, pass christian, etc.

they have put fencing up to prevent ppl from entering the debris field at long beach

the rich demand their privacy even in death

but you may sure that there are wealthy dead in that area

i'd also be checking lakeview area of new orleans as well

this storm killed rich & poor alike

i personally know a person with $30 million net worth who lost both his homes on the miss. gulf coast, he'd be dead now, if not for his wife putting the foot down on his plan to ride out the storm

many well-to-do in that area who rode out camille will have seen no reason to evac

cheap assumptions are just that, cheap

rich & poor alike have lost homes & peeps

my friend who died was a white christian business owner, prob. not rich enough to be worried abt estate tax tho

but they'll find their corpses

i just wonder what the hell these corpses are supposed to prove

if yr assumption is that only poor ppl were harmed by katrina, jeez, you should stop watching so much teevee

they would love you to believe that only the "undeserving" suffered

it makes it easier to forget abt us & put us all in a little box out of sight out of mind

62. I don't think that. Of course all kinds of people were harmed and many
died or lost family members and friends. I do think that if reporting really covered the breadth and depth of the damage to all these communities - deaths of poor, middle class, and whatever wealthy people insisted on staying; infrastructure destroyed; toxic mud everywhere - the rest of the country would have a clearer idea of how profound the devastation really is.

I do think it is hypocritical and shameless of these senators to be trying to locate for their own political purposes of pushing for tax cuts for the wealthy a rich dead person whose death deprived his/her heirs of the family business or some such situation.

56. I have never been so proud to be a Democrat
nor so utterly repulsed by Republicans. Next they'll be extracting the gold dental work from the cadavers of the Katrina dead.

60. Using the dead as a political rallying point is just, um, well
done all the time! Sheesh. Now I really feel bad. Someone explain why we have these vermin running the country again, I forgot why.

63. Because they stole the last two elections, that's why.
Vermin is right. Howard Dean in the better part of his Wolf Blitzer interview about a week ago pointed out that right after Frist had his endlessly rebroadcast little photo-op with the sick poor people in New Orleans, he flew right back to Washington to work on pushing through the estate tax cut. THeir priorities are nothing if not consistent.

61. Absolutely fucking disgusting.
I'm not sure what to be more disgusted at - Congress using the dead for political gain, the insane greed of the GOP, or both. Help me decide here!

64. OK, I must be stupid. Someone please explain to me the benefit???
Please be kind. What am I missing?

Okay, I give up.

I typically consider myself pretty smart, but I can't figure out for the life of me what "finding a rich victim" does to revive support for elimination of the estate tax.

Please explain dumb ol' me. (Or is it I'm just not evil enough to think of such a scheme?)

65. OK, here's the way I see it, though it's a stretch for a non-neocon:

They want to tap into the national pain and worry about the Katrina aftermath, the compassion for its victims, especially those who have lost family members.

They want to USE it for political spin.

They COULD have used just any rich dead person whose heirs were affected by the estate tax. But NOOOOO, they wanted to find a Katrina victim who was a rich dead person whose heirs were affected by the estate tax.

Then they could stage a presentation all about how there were many kinds of victims of the hurricane, and all of them left families who suffered. Then a quick cut to the punch line: To help the suffering family of the rich dead Katrina victim, let's give ALL THE SUPER-RICH PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY a tax cut.... Some smoke and mirrors and Bill Frist's lugubrious face - they could work in that endlessly rebroadcast little Fristian photo-op with sick people in Louisiana - would doubtless add a certain something to the performance.

It's supposed to drum up emotional support for their cause. There is no rational argument for it, so they are trying to manipulate people's feelings about the Katrina victims. That's the way I see it.

67. Shame is a function of having a conscience, an active sense of right and
wrong. These guys are either sociopaths (as I believe Bush is) or have so stranged their own conscience that it hardly makes a peep anymore when they do unspeakable things. In this situation they certainly do not seem to see the hypocrisy and falseness of what they are doing and they obviously do not care about the many non-rich victims. The level of callousness is appalling.

I hope this little escapade into the macabre backfires on them big time.

68. This is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard
I hope they find somebody and try to make their case.

We could counter-attack by pointing out that the money gained for the government from the inheritance tax on a single one of these individuals could have been used to prevent this whole catastrophe from occurring.
