40. I discovered PILON about 2 years ago...
The local markets hide it in the "mexican foods" aisle.

It's really good, and very cheap.(Espresso grind is $2.59/ 10 oz)

I imagine the price will eventually go up as more people discover it,
but for now I can drink coffee like a king!

66. Bingo -- That's all we drink!
especialmente porque me mami chula es boricua!

It is basically espresso coffee in a can. I think it's a Puerto Rican or Dominican brand. I used to buy coffee beans and grind them, but after finding bustelo, what's the point of all that trouble.

78. 100% Arabica beans?
I think they make the best espresso. I have the feeling that Folgers and most major American brands are a blend of Robusta and Arabica beans. Robusta beans cost much less to grow because the coffee plant has a greater yield and is more pest resistant. But the flavor difference is really telling. 100% Arabica makes a big difference in my opinion.

19. GREAT coffee, but at $$25-30+ per pound it's a tad expensive.
We brought home Blue Mountain from Jamaica and swore we'd never drink anything else until we had to pay HUGE $$$$$ here for it. It's great coffee, but DAMN, the price! Can it be purchased directly from Jamaica? What does COSTCO charge for it? Does COSTCO sell it online? Do you know? We have no COSTCO here. :(

My sisters buys it at Cosco. I don't know what she pays for it.
She mixes it with cheaper blends but it still tastes great. Buy beans.

4. Procter & Gamble Warns Of Possible Coffee Shortage
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 10:54 AM by mcscajun
Procter and Gamble is warning consumers about a possible Folgers coffee shortage -- or at the very least it may come in unfamiliar packaging.

P&G's New Orleans coffee plant was affected by Hurricane Katrina, but the company hopes to restore operations there soon.

http://www.wcpo.com/news/2005/local/09/14/coffee.html

Banana supplies also are expected to be impacted. Roughly 25 percent of the banana imports made by Chiquita Brands International last year passed through its Gulfport, Miss., facility, which is too damaged now to receive shipments.

Louisiana oysters also will be in short supply. Oyster beds, boats, docks and warehouses were destroyed by the storm. Louisiana supplied 40 percent of the country’s oysters.

41. Actually it's roots were formed in Baton Rouge......
http://www.communitycoffee.com/ccc/Default/AboutUsBody/

Community Coffee Company is steeped in tradition as rich as our coffee. As the largest family-owned retail coffee brand in the U.S., our company’s roots grew from a small country store in Baton Rouge where more than 80 years ago, founder Henry Norman 'Cap' Saurage brewed his popular coffee.

The coffee became so popular that he named it Community in honor of his loyal friends and customers. Cap eventually turned his attention away from the grocery store and devoted all of his time and energy to making great coffee.

Today, Community Coffee Company is so much a part of people’s lives and spans so many generations that it has been dubbed the State Coffee of Louisiana. We invite you to enjoy this family tradition and experience a little bit of Louisiana in every cup.

I picked up the Community habit when I lived in Lafayette. We had to depend on friends to supply it to us after we moved to San Antonio, but now it's just down the street at Central Market HEB. We even found it in the IGA in Port Aransas!

Dark Roast definitely floats my boat!

14. Yes
all of the Folgers coffee including all the flavored and instant coffees are gone - with a sign posted saying that supply has been diverted to Katrina relief organizations. Availability of other brands seems unaffected.

I don't drink coffee except during the winter - and I bought some just after the storm in anticipation of shortages and price increases.

52. LOL!
trof, I love you!

My friend here in B'ham who manages a grocery store says that it's not a shortage per se, but a distribution problem. They can't get the Folger's coffee to distribution centers and retailers the way they did before the storm, and there is a surcharge on it because of the additional transportation costs. Some retailers are declining to pay the surcharge, so they won't have it for a while.

Same thing is true with Domino's Sugar.

60. Forget the Folgers
Edited on Mon Sep-19-05 09:36 AM by Neecy
Most of the canned commercial coffees, such as Folgers, are made from nasty bulk coffee from Vietnam - stuff that they purchase for about twenty cents a pound and then mark up four thousand percent for this swill.

If you don't buy from a local roaster, consider roasting your own coffee. You can buy unroasted coffee from a national green coffee coop (http://www.greencoffee.coop) for about two dollars a pound, and this stuff is all excellent estate coffee - far better quality than Starbucks offers. You can buy an inexpensive roaster from http://sweetmarias.com or http://coffeebeancorral.com. It takes very little time to roast your own coffee, and with the small home roasting appliances available you don't need a lot of skill. The savings from roasting your own coffee will quickly pay for the cost of the roaster, and the quality of your coffee will be superb, since freshly-roasted coffee will always have a better taste and aroma than stuff that was preground a year ago or even the Starbucks beans that you might buy, since you have no idea what the actual roasting date of their beans are - and from my experience with Starbucks, their coffee beans taste OLD.

Coffee prices will indeed skyrocket in the next few months, since New Orleans was a major coffee port and warehousing facility. Load up on green coffee and roast your own and save a ton of money.

73. I don't know - I buy Taster's Choice for instant....however....
my local Popeye's Chicken franchise is shut down today.

they had a sign last week saying that since there base of operations is NO they were out of certain items, and i have to admit that the meal i got there didn't taste like popeye's usual. I'm wonderign what that's all about.

74. We saw this coming
and stocked up at Costco over Labor Day. Glad we did. Everyone come to my house for a coffee-clutch!

75. Try Sweet Unity Farms
I'm sorry, I know you're asking about Folgers, but just in case you, or any other DUer is interested, try Sweet Unity Farms brand coffee (http://www.sweetunityfarms.com/)

Sweet Unity Farms is a cooperative of over 300 small-scale farmers founded by David Robinson, the son of baseball great Jackie Robinson. It's located in Tanzania. Great way to enjoy good coffee and give money directly to the farmers rather than a faceless corp.

76. I do drink Folger's flavored coffees sometimes ... many cheap flavored
coffees you can buy in the grocery store suck ... but Folger's flavors are relatively cheap and pretty tasty. French Vanilla especially.

So, it's back to the more expensive grind my local coffee purveyor makes just for me -- half swiss chocolate almond, half coconut macaroon ... that equals ALMOND JOY coffee, and it is yummy!

More than 50 percent of Folgers coffee is roasted in New Orleans.

Folgers has started heavy relief and rebuilding efforts, but in the meantime, customers may experience some inconvenience when trying to find Folgers products.

Folgers is committed to staying in New Orleans.

79. Don't forget stores like Marshalls and Ross; coffee is
usually sold in these stores. I've bought Kona, Sumatra and Blue Mountain, a full pound of beans for $4-6.99.

80. Sorry, I'm too much of a coffee snob
so I don't exactly track the Folgers scene. :)

However, I've heard rumblings of coffee prices increasing, across the board, due to the impact of Katrina. I guess Time will tell...
Jeez...Gas...Coffee...what else?
