From the edge...
...Two items from the 9-18-05 Mobile Register.

The first is an article lauding faith-based initiatives and the wonderful new role they need to play in our nation. I notice it has little mention of opposing viewpoints, nary a comment from those who feel increasing government subsidy of church programs is a bad idea.

The other is a local poll that shows not only how partisan Americans have become, but also reveals some abhorrent attitudes among its respondents. This should make us ask, "Why just evacuees from New Orleans and not elsewhere?"

1. Why you wanna bum me out? lemme get this straight: give tax
money from the poor and middle class to churches, and require background checks on NO evacues before allowing them in shelters. Is that about it? Wow.

2. I find it especially apalling...
...that people in a community that has experienced a devastating hurricane before (Frederick, 1979) and missed really widespread damage from this one by mere miles could have that attitude toward people fleeing the aftermath of the storm.

There were some evacuees moved from a Red Cross shelter in a white flight suburb on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay because the residents complained about "people like that being near one of the wealthiest neighborhoods." Those people mentioned security checks for evacuees also. That was only two days after Katrina struck.

3. Do these kindhearted people even know how long a check takes?
