According to DailyKOS, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-Ny., said at a fundraiser that Hackett is "definitely running" for Senate and that he believes he will oust DeWine.

27. By that time though.....
The machines could be out and the entire thing overhauled.

Remember the federal lawsuits? There's a trial starting in December, and the counties are getting the option of throwing out the Diebold machines. (Remember its those pesky fraud based scanners/TSx tabulators which caused the Hackett loss)

Hackett had the balls to stand up to Bush when no other Dems would...

That's precisely why he nearly won (if he didn't actually). And it's precisely why George Galloway, Jon Stewart and Cindy Sheehan are "winning"--each in their own way not only excited, but EMPOWERED the Dem base by finding the courage to stand up to the Bush empire and shout, "ENOUGH of your crap!"

Hackett came within 3.5 points of winning a congressional district that has the second largest number of Republicans in the the Ohio, and the 56th largest number of Republicans in the entire country (out of a possible 435). If we can get candidates to do what Hackett did in all fifty states next year, we'll win a LOT more often than we'll lose.

26. Hackett is a no-compromises progressive.
He can be as centrist as anyone and still has the fire and spirit to beat anybody. He's definitely a take-no prisoners Howard Dean candidate.

If every candidate has that fire in them they will do great things in the senate.

34. Hackett got 70% in District 02 (whcih went supposedly 70% for *) so there
is not way they could pull this one off! (even with Blackwell at the helm).

NOTE TO OHIOANS: there is all the more reason we must get out and work to get the RON initiatives (election reform) passed this November, it will enable us to kick some royal GOP sorry butt in '06!

Who is the challenger? They're working on getting rid of the voting machines right now and upholding a law for verified paper.

23. It's currently 55-44-1.
Really more like 55-45.

If we can pick up Santorum's and DeWine's seats (and assuming that we keep all of our own), that would be 53-46-1, or 53-47. We'd need at least three more seats, preferably four or more.

Charles Schumer knows a bit about this voting issue I guess, but who in the senate can take this thing by the bullhorns?

Ohio needs to completely get rid of its Diebold machines (tabulator) or there will never be anyone elected except some corporate crony.

46. Very good article
SNIP.....Democrats will need a mighty good reason to go back to the polls. Many believe that our elections are rigged. And they have good reason. Republicans own the voting machine companies that count 80% of the votes. Congress and the courts are unlikely to change that. And the Democratic leadership has hardly made it an issue.

Hes got that right!

55. Reporting back from Columbus on Hackett.
This was not a fund raiser as I previously mentioned, but just a friendly neighborhood party, to introduce Hackett. The party was hosted by two wonderful Democrats in my neighborhood that I meet last year during the Kerry campaign.

There were probably about two hundred people there total. Senator Ted Strickland and a few representatives were there along with some local politicians including the Mayor of Columbus Mike Coleman.

Paul Hackett was the guest of honor and the only speaker. He spoke for about a half hour. He spoke mainly about how and why he decided to go into politics. He touched on abortion, guy rights and gun control and made his position know on all three, but stressed that he wants to concentrate on things that really matter such as the economy and jobs.

This is the first time I have meet him, and he is a very likable guy. He is very down to earth and my impression is that he is one of us, and not your typical politician. He is a man for the people.

One statement he made that really stuck out was how he felt that the Republican party had been taken over by a bunch of religious fanatics and that religion had no place in politics. If people want government to be ran by religious leaders then they can move to Afghanistan or Iran. You do not elect a politician based on their religious belief, you go to church for your spiritual leader ship.

He hinted that he would be running in a political race soon, but made no formal announcements. Others at the event informed me that he can not announce until he files certain legal paper work.

57. Thats Awesome
Dewine is one of the worst senators up there and Im glad to see that he is being opposed.

Like the Ohio governor Taft, Dewine is hated by Republicans and Democrats.

Also Hackett will scoop up the gun vote in ohio, as gun voters have had to choose from either a Democrat (usually anti-gun), or Dewine (VERY anti-gun). (Hacket is quite progun and has his own CCW)

Hacket will likely pickup an NRA endorsement and I suspect beat Dewine handily.
