dick cheney goes under the knife - then what..??
So dick will have surgery for an aneurysm in the area of his knee. What is the next move? Will he have a full recovery and be a more visible part of this administration?

Or will he opt out and open the door for the next one to inherit the throne to move into his spot?

7. With his prior problems...
any surgical anesthesia could bring about a life-threatening problem.

There is nothing routine about operating on a man who has had as many heart issues as he has.

I would wager there is about a 30% chance that he will either not make it or will suffer complications that will take him out of public life for good.

Why do you think he has been buying property? It is estate planning.

20. It's an aneurysm, meaning artery. Presumably the popliteal artery, which
is the main one going through the back of the knee.

Cheney has severe atherosclerosis, or blockages of the arteries. The blockages in the arteries to his heart, causing his heart attacks, are only one manifestation of a system wide disease of the arteries.

Blockages and aneurysms could occur in many different arteries, including the carotids (supplying the brain), the aorta (the main artery running through the chest and abdomen, and arteries at various levels in the legs.

An aneurysm is a weakening of the artery wall causing a ballooning of the vessel at some point. If it were the aorta, this could lead to a catastrophic rupture and hemorrhage.

In the knee it would be unlikely to cause major bleeding, but an aneurysm could disrupt blood supply to the lower leg, causing a cold, numb or painful leg/foot and eventually gangrene in severe instances.

Surgery would be most likely directed at repairing or bypassing the aneurysm area, sometimes with a synthetic piece of tubing to replace the damaged portion of the artery.

Given the severity of the VP's heart disease, he'd represent a relatively poor surgical risk, a common problem among patients with vascular disease. But the nature of popliteal aneurysm surgery is usually less strenous compared with heart surgery or surgery on the major arteries of the chest or abdomen.
