main things I remember:

--she's from the former East Germany and was a protegee of Helmut Kohl

--male CDU/CSU leaders expected an election in a year, when they would decide among themselves who would be the candidate

--very ironic she's the leader in a party which has been a party run by male Roman Catholics (she's protestant)
