God Hates Fags and their "Thank God for Katrina" signs (puke alert)
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/FEMA_chief_shopping_his_re_0918.html

A smattering of anti-gay activists celebrated oustide the headquarters of gay rights lobby Human Rights Campaign on the eve of former Chief Justice William Rehnquist's funeral Sept. 7.

Photographs of the event were obtained by RAW STORY.

The protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas -- more or less all relevatives of anti-gay activist Fred Phelps -- attacked Rehnquist while celebrating hurricane Katrina, which they believe purged New Orleans of unsavory homosexual elements. Similar charges resounded among more right-wing Christian groups, who noted that the gay pride festival Southern Decadence was scheduled right around the time the hurricane hit.

1. When Phelps wsa in Cambridge ...
Edited on Mon Sep-19-05 07:16 AM by Onlooker
When Cambridge City Hall (MA) became the first in the nation to give out marriage licenses on May 17, 2004 at 12:01 a.m., there were 1000s of people gathered. Across the street was Fred Phelps group, a group of about 20 people holding very strange signs. Two of the signs I'll never forget:

- Thank God for 9/11
- God blew up the space shuttle

They're just a bizarre fringe group that I don't think has an equal on the left.

2. Really more of a bizarre family than a group
Phelps and his family constitute the bulk of this group. They subsist on sueing people as most of them are lawyers as well as nuts.

3. that just warms my heart...
oh wait, that's the bile in my throat...

I cannot fathom the minds of these people. Where do they get such a message of hate? Christ surely didn't preach hate...and yet these people are what is seen as the face of Christianity today...

Well, I for one hope there is a God...and that He is watching these people very closely...

6. They have their own church
Fred Phelps is a lawyer and a minister. His family constitutes the bulk of his congregation. He sits in the family compound and issues his fatwas and law suits and calls himself a pious man.

9. Yes, I have seen a website
of his and it is sick... so sick... I would never become a Christian if THAT was the criteria.... and guess what? Neither would Jesus Himself! Unless Phelps and his ilk change, there IS a special sapider hole in hell prepared....

17. I'm more concerned with the here and now
I believe him to be a sick man in need of help. But the situation is rather difficult and instead he spreads his poison.

26. I am a Christian as well, and I can tell you these 'people' have
nothing to do w/Christ.

Strange how the Beatitudes are suddenly lost on these individuals. Phelps is an idiot, and the more he spouts off, the better it is for the rest of us.

I have often found it strange that the basic tenets taught by Jesus are lost in the rhetoric of hate and division of the "churches" that are supposed to 'enlighten' those whom the actually drive away.

11. You should probably edit out "gay"
I think pedophile is enough, unless you think gay makes him worse.

At any rate, I've long thought Phelps was guilty of child abuse for the way he is teaching his children and grandchildren a truly sick view of the world. It's just a matter of time before his children come to believe they can commit mass murder in the name of God.

13. I think the use of "gay" is essential here
Edited on Mon Sep-19-05 08:21 AM by Rabrrrrrr
Since that's his whole jihad, against gays, AND to differentiate him from the average pedophile, who isn't gay.

16. Being a pedophile does not make one gay
Being a pedophile means that you're a sick fuck who takes advantage of underage children.

Being Gay means that you are open and acceptable to a consensual relationship with another person like yourself

32. Phelps literally is a child abuser and wife beater ...
... according to an unpublished biography of him. The book was the subject of a lawsuit and as such became part of the public record. The entire book, "Addicted to Hate," can be found on line at:
http://www.qrd.org/qrd/usa/kansas/phelps/1994/addicted.to.hate-06.02.94

Phelps and his "klan" of inbred followers are truly sick people. That they are allowed to raise kids in such an environment is an assault on everything "family" should mean.

The good news is that Freddie is getting up in years and not in the best of health (there have been rumors that he has Parkinson's disease for several years). ... The bad news is that he'll pass his empire on to equally demented family members, most likely his daughter Shirly Phelps-Roper who is pretty much the family spokesasshole and/or his grandson Benji Phelps who is in charge of all their sick "god hates (fill in the blank)" web sites.

21. It'll eventually happen. Count on it.
Phelps will send his family/cult to the wrong place at the wrong time and piss off the wrong person or persons (who won't give a shit about the inevitable lawsuits) -- who will then proceed to go medieval on as many of their sorry asses as they can get to.

Then the lawsuits will start flying at every level, while Phelps & Cult whine about "persecution" and how their civil rights were violated.

I've got a bag of popcorn with Phelps' name on it in anticipation of that day.

But then, it would just make him more vocal, as you say, about persecution and how evil this country is and blah blah blah.

28. He did one 'protest' in Iowa I believe, and the Townspeople...
drove him out of town. I read where they were seriously threatening to beat him senseless, and he left the cemetery very quickly.

While the mental picture of him being driven from the cemetery by people w/pitchforks and torches is very alluring, I just wish they would have caught him, tarred and feathered him, and made the national news.

Phelps is satan's little minion....:(

25. What percentage of the people who died due to Katrina were gay?
almost none I'm betting. Why on earth would any divine being kill a bunch of straight people to punish gay people? There isn't even any logic here.

What stupid stupid stupid people.
