British servicemen held over Iraq 'shooting'

Two British servicemen have been arrested in Iraq amid reports that they fired on police in Basra, the Ministry of Defence confirmed today.

They were detained by police in the southern city earlier today following reports of a skirmish. snip

The Ministry of Defence refused to comment on reports that the men were working undercover and said it is not yet known exactly why they have been held.

A spokesman said: “We can confirm that two military personnel were detained by Iraqi authorities earlier today.”

Undercover UK soldiers arrested after Basra gunfight

Violence boiled over in Basra today when two British soldiers were arrested by Iraqi authorities after a lethal exchange of gunfire with Iraqi police.

The arrests prompted British troops to send a military patrol to the police station where the soldiers were being held which then led to a riot, during which two Iraqi civilians were killed and two British tanks were set on fire, according to witnesses.

An Iraqi official told the Reuters news agency that the two British soldiers, who were travelling in a civilian car, were detained this morning after clashing with Iraqi police. Reports said the soldiers killed one Iraqi policeman and wounded another.

The official said he had been informed by the British military that they were "undercover soldiers". It was not clear what unit the men were from - or whether they were regular soldiers or from the special forces.

"They were driving a civilian car and were dressed in civilian clothes...

2. It's not even the first time I've heard rumors
But I don't have a good link to share about it. Though I will say it was former military discussing another case. It was seen as a possibility that military forces were insiting violence, possibly. He'd read about soldiers being sited in an area minutes before an explosion, right by the explosion, and also a witness who was screaming the soldiers had set it... was taken away. I have no way of knowing if it's true. I can't draw any conclusions, and simply hope it's not true.

4. Well, journalists tend to be shot by SNIPERS.
I would say yes to your question. I also found the "terrorists" in the Nick Berg beheading video to look a bit "out of character" and didn't look like they were from the Mid-East. There was spmething]/b] about their stance that didn't 'fit' for me. JMCPO.

5. "undercover soldiers" killing police...
Too bad Iraq is a US puppet now;
otherwise, we might have gotten some useful
info from these 2 criminals
before they were tried and convicted.

6. Media blackout on soldiers arrested for planting bombs report
According to this article, from the Washington Post, these soldiers were arrested yesterday. From all the reports I have seen on the British media throughout the day, it has been reported here as if these arrests were only made today:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/19/AR2005091900572.html?nav=rss_world

From the article:

Monday's clashes stemmed from the arrest by Iraqi police on Sunday of two Britons, whom Iraqi police accused of planting bombs.

A Western military spokesman in Basra confirmed "an ongoing disturbance" in the city on Monday but said Iraqi and British force were working together to try to quell it.

There seems to be a media blackout here in Britain on why they have been arrested, and all the media are saying that the soldiers have been arrested because of the shooting incidents. Please spread this news, there is some blatent and obvious misinformation going on here, and the public deserve the truth.

The MoD continue to say no comment, and all media outlets continue to refuse to report on this.
