"Rove's dirty tricks on behalf of Nixon's 1972 campaign catapulted Rove onto the national stage. From his Eagle's Nest in the West Wing of the White House, Rove now directs a formidable political dirty tricks operation and disinformation mill."

"Rove is more than a master manipulator of the news media. He's a stealthy smear artist who does whatever he can get away with. And Rove has gotten away with plenty. That's how George W. Bush became governor of Texas ... and president of the United States. What remains to be seen is whether Rove's techniques will again prove successful when this country votes on Nov. 2."

"In its last days, the 1994 campaign also turned nasty. Texan voters began receiving calls from "pollsters" asking questions such as: "Would you be more or less likely to vote for Governor Richards if you knew her staff is dominated by lesbians?" In the business, it is called "push-polling" and Shipley has no doubt who was behind it."Rove has used this kind of dirty tricks in every campaign he's ever run.""

Only circumstantial evidence links Rove to the push-polling. In fact, his fingerprints have not been found on any dirty tricks since his College Republican days

"Nasty campaigning has been a hallmark of the Rove-inspired campaigns orchestrated for George W. Bush: the weird 1994 "whispering" campaign that the Democratic Texas Governor Ann Richards was a lesbian (she lost to Bush) and the scurrilous slandering of John McCain's mental health and family history in the 2000 South Carolina Republican presidential primary (it is amazing that McCain can remain civil to the Bush White House, given its miserable tactics to ensure the senator's defeat in that race). The film goes further into the Bush White House, pointing out Rove's role in issuing the phony data which was used to justify the invasion of Iraq and virtually accusing Rove of leaking the identity of Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife as a CIA operative when the ambassador blew the whistle on the White House's lies."

Re: Immigration Meeting

Because of a Steering Committee meeting this afternoon to pick the next Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I cannot attend today’s discussion on immigration. I hope there will be another time soon when we can get together to talk about this issue and several others.

Immigration needs to be considered in the context of (1) media bias, (2) animosity toward the President, and (3) feelings of the Republican base. All three should be considered when deciding how to proceed on immigration legislation.

You read polls better than anyone so you know that the majority of American people (including Democrats and Hispanics) feel illegal immigration is a serious problem. A two to one majority also opposes guest worker program that would allow illegal immigrants to “stay” in the United States (CBS News poll).

Enforcement of immigration laws, current and new, should come first to satisfy the increasing public demand for border security. It will not be enough to pass enforcement bills this fall that will take a year or two to produce results. Current laws need to be better enforced so the American people see results immediately. (Liberals can easily and accurately be painted as opposing enforcement).

Only then, as enforcement begins to gain traction, should the twin subjects of guestworkers and long-time illegal residents be addressed. Either involves a huge new bureaucracy that would have to process perhaps millions of applications, enforce hundreds of new regulations, and monitor thousands of employers. Extensive hearings should be held to evaluate the impact of any new immigration programs on American workers, the economy, and taxpayers.

32. Just went to Lamar's site
http://lamarsmith.house.gov/

Wanted to see if I could catch him a fumble or something. It's clean far as I could see or the articles I read. Thing is he's not going to get Rove or BushINC on board with illegal immigration. So yes it's a topic of much contention and dissension between BushINC and the rest of the republican party. As proof, Freepers hate Bush's immigration policy almost as much as they hate his new pet project NO.

34. Key line: Enforcement and Liberals
The key line from the transcript is "Liberals can easily and accurately be painted as opposing enforcement". Watch out for more big brother / police state power grabs and watch out for the meme / frame "opposing enforcement", which is a lie.

Rep. Smith forgets that Bush has proposed a guest worker program in the past.

Reframe the issue as "DHS power grab" or "guest workers do jobs nobody else wants" or "the levees are leakier than the borders".

his rich friends want illegal immingrants...and more of them. Thye do not want to see it go away, so they are going to control it and turn it around on the Dems.

we have laws on the books that penalize the employers of ilegal aliens, heavily... how bout we START enforcing those and send in the enforcement teams to oh I don't know Walmart, the California Central Valley? As they say, round up the usual suspect and ahem levy the federally mandated fines. I believe they run at 1000 a head... so how bout that for well ENFORCEMENT?
