3. That does seem "prudent at this juncture"
As much as it pains pains pains ( and I do mean Pains) me to say this, I actually agree with the Shrub- it isn't smart to rush the return, despite people' s anxiousness to return home, especially with another storm approaching.

5. I think there are other reasons as well........
I don't think Nagin thought this out very well. NOLA remains too toxic to re-inhabit at this point and the basic services for sustaining habitation aren't in place. I can understand his position, but I think he's rushing things a bit.

9. I was thinkin he probably jumped the gun lettin people back in
any part of that mess, for exactly the reasons you say, plus the likelihhod of another hurricane. I also agree with the post that Rita does look like another monster. Pretty darn big and growing fast.

10. Just read that Rita may hit LA
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9399175/#050919b

Ridge over Texas that would have pushed it south is breaking up, making it more likely for a western Louisiana landfall.

Too early to tell as yet, but we all need to keep an eye on this one

11. I'm sorry to hear it,
but I understand, as Rita may end up in the vicinity of New Orleans according to projections. I like Nagin's idea of re-opening the city as soon as possible. Security ninnies will always have some reason why it's "too soon." The longer people are excluded from the city the fewer people will return in the end, and the more chance the city will not get back on its feet.

I'm also thinking about the WTC situation. The site was cleaned up much more quickly than predicted, just as in New Orleans, the Corps of Engineers have de-watered the city faster than expected. But at this point, FOUR YEARS LATER, the WTC site is STILL just a hole in the ground. Those towers could have easily been rebuilt by now. I hope and pray that New Orleans doesn't fall prey to the same kind of do-nothing stagnation that the WTC site has suffered from.
