Oprah donates $10M to Katrina survivors...
She just announced on her show that she's set up a special Angel Network fund dedicated to rebuilding lives. The fund targets building and furnishing homes. She's set up a web site where people can donate cash, buy furnishings from a registry, or even sponsor a new house.

Visit Oprah's Katrina Home Registry.

4. I saw that too
What a woman. The plan for people to donate stuff over the net like a bridal registry is also a nice idea - like a Habitat for Humanity deal for those of us who are no good at building!

7. it is awesome, but I have to say
that I peeked through the registry seeing what I could do in my budget and the items are quite expensive (they couldn't find a vacuum cheaper than $200?)

9. $50,000 buys a new home.
$1750 buys a full kitchen.
$1600 buys a full living room (No TV. I suppose they assume survivors will be bringing their own Plasmas.)

17. It's like me giving $10
Every nickel helps, just the same. Hope some of those houses don't wind up in Carmel, Indiana, like those "Free Cars" did...

11. I am so glad to hear this
Oprah (her Angel Network) is giving to the survivors themselves, not an entity where some filthy gob-bot can get their hands on the $$.

The survivors are going to need so much assistance and this is a great contribution toward that by Oprah. Hopefully she can move her viewers to contribute to the fund :)

12. The registry is a GREAT idea. She rocks so hard.
The registry is such a great, great idea--because people never know what to send, and sometimes you get a whole bunch of diapers but need some other stuff...How great.

I have great respect for Oprah and what she has accomplished with her life. Very inspirational!

Now where's that spare $10 Million I have laying around so I could do the same thing?

are being donated to her, like those cars she gave away to her audience?

16. she has apart of the site devoted to corporate sponsors
but that stuff is different. I'm sure that she will do a show where she thanks people for donating items that weren't on the registry.

...in the past over lots, but I'll give her her due on this one.
She needs to start putting the squeeze on all her celeb friends who are so quick to answer phones and shoot PSAs.

19. $10 Million is a lot more that W gave from his own wallet!
She asked for people to give from the heart, and what they could afford. If only a toaster, than so be it...and to those who can give more like a house, great!!! Her angel network is great!

Great idea!! Actually gives the people affect Katrina some hope!

27. I'll repeat what I said
right after Katrina hit and everybody was ragging on Oprah.

Why is she the ONLY billionaire anybody mentions here who has an obligation to give away her money?

I haven't seen a single thread asking where Warren Buffet, Bill Gates or the Walton family are. Why is the ONLY black, female self-made billionaire the only one we focus on?

Oprah gives away more every week than 99% of the people here earn in a year.

I will never understand why we feel the need to hold her to some ridiculous standard above and beyond every other rich person in America.

I love Oprah. I never watch her show... it's not my thing. But I know where she came from, what she became, and what she does with herself and her fortune, and I find all that very admirable.

29. My guess would be that since Oprah grew up there..poor and black
and has "made it" bigtime, she has a built in "obligation" to be more empathetic to the conditions that so many people in the deep south are facing now..

Perhaps she was just waiting for things to settle down a bit and could set things up properly..

The only problem I see with her plan is that so many of the most needy were not, and never will be "home-owners"..How will renters and the "marginal" people affected be able to be helped..

..I am glad she stepped up...

30. Glad to see this.
I'm glad Oprah did this and set it up this way. Much preferable to the Red Cross which just seems like a black hole where the money will never been seen again by the people who need it the most. .Also, I think Habitat for Humanity will be part of this which is awesome news because they WILL get things done. :woohoo:

Okay, my remaining beef with Oprah is that she still has not slammed the * cabal for their evil non response to Katrina. She has the power and the airwaves to do so and has not. C'mon Oprah! :banghead:
