18. The picture of the dog in the water was taken |
|
by an AP photographer. I first saw it on truthout a few days ago. I have been crying ever since as the caption explained that this little one is stuck in the goo. I sent this email:
I saw the photo you took of the dog stuck in the water because of the oil spill. It is on the web page truthout.com PLEASE tell me you rescued it! If so, and you better have, I will adopt it immediately. Please acknowledge this email or call me...please.
I have not heard from them. I hardly think of anything else.

19. I'm sorry to hear the photographer has not replied to you. |
|
I saw in the news that many of the animals have been moved to California, which I guess makes it all the more harder to reunite those pets with the owners. I just hope they all get adopted into good homes.

21. Yes, many are in SF, LA and San Diego |
|
I just emailed the editor of Truthout as well asking for assistance. I've been haunted by this since Friday. My husband and I were not really thinking of adding to our family. Jean was from a puppy mill, now closed, and she doesn't have much of an immunity system (the owner inbred!). Her meds are very, very expensive but she is happy and healthy. But, if I get a call, I'll take that little one in a heartbeat.

I hope those other few that looked like they could be helped but hadn't been yet ... I hope someone helped them. They look like they could make it, with a little help from a friend.

11. we must never let this happen again |
|
we must lobby hard for all shelters to accept pets -- this must become national policy. They do not have to be in the same area as people. a separate section setup with collapsible crates run by volunteers will work. most shelters have different large rooms to separate it. there's not excuse to not implement this!

15. I read today in one website that the biggest problem of the rescuers |
|
right now is that they are running out of space to put the rescued pets.

Pet Safe is a Red Cross program in Nassau County, NY that is a cooperative effort of local groups and government working together to assist people and their pets during times of disasters. We're asking the American Red Cross to adopt it as a national program. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/750226838

Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 01:29 AM by SeattleGirl
The kitty in the second picture looks like of one of my cats, Miss Kitty The Queen of the Universe. She's sitting on my lap as I type this. I love her to pieces. She is 14 years old, and I got her from a shelter. She was in a cage with about 6 other kittens, and all but her were up against the front of the cage. She was curled up in the corner, a little fluffy ball of grey fur, and I instantly fell in love with her.
Thanks for posting these, even though the last one breaks my heart.

16. About the second photo, that's the kitty's owner in the photo. |
|
He went back to his house to rescue his kitty from the attic. That's quite a leap, though!
I bet Miss Kitty The Queen of the Universe is very grateful for being rescued from the shelter, and returns every bit of your love.

26. That's like how I got my little dog |
|
He's gone now and I miss him all the time. :( But I remember one year for my birthday I got to get a dog so we went to the Humane Society downtown. I looked at all the dogs and something drew me to this one caged area. I saw the cutest little litter of puppies. They were all brothers and sisters. My brother wanted this other little dog but I wanted the one I got. I was just so drawn to him. He was so cute and playful and when I got him he was so happy to be with me. I miss him all the time. Your story just reminded me of that.

27. How sweet. I'm sorry your puppy is gone. |
|
My husband had a dog for 16 years -- she was an old lady when I met my husband, but I fell in love with her. After he had to have her put down  he was so broken-hearted. About 9 months after that, at Christmas-time, my daughter and I got him a dog food bowl, leash, collar, and dog toy. We put them in a box with a note that said "Just add dog when you're ready". In two months, we had our new puppy, who is now almost five, and who we got from a private family, and while we miss the first dog, we love our new one.

it was a great photo-essay about saving these animals. Even the stranded ones let me believe they'd make it. That last one is just too awful, and ruins the whole post.

We've seen enough death, human and animal, from Katrina. There's no reason to show such a gruesome photograph. What was the point? To make everyone sick to their stomach and upset?
