12. No probs
I've been here for several weeks but have been prevented from posting other interesting stuff - until now.

I had to 'reply' to heaps of posts first.

Admin: it's a good way of turning newbies away IMO.

3. Yeah, it's about time for them to take a tumble...too close to the flame.
They think they're cute...they think they're Bill Gates. They're neither. The amazing reduction in cost of storage plus searching software makes them a prime target.

I don't get all this fascination with centralized storage? What's this about: back to the mainframes.

Distributed processing is here to stay. Why put your private information on the web? The most communication intensive email users/search users are also those with legal or ethical mandates for secured information--health, finance, law--give me a break! They're not going to use it.

Can't wait to see these guys take a tumble, especially after hiring Iraq PR flack Dan Senor s VP of International something.

Google as in Grandiosity!

4. I guess it's human nature to want to see the successful humbled

I'm not saying that as a criticism, just an observation.

I remember back in the 80s when I thought Microsoft was something special...and they were. Same with Adobe. Unlike Microsoft, Adobe's managed to hang on to at least some of their original elan.

Google's products simply amaze me with their design and forethought, and I am a big fan of how they treat the people who work for them, too.

Some future day, though, I will realize that whatever made Google magical has passed, and that they have become just another megacorp.

But not yet...

Peace.

5. I was an early fan ...
... but when they tried to stroll down the corridors of power and have a smoke with the big boys, all I could think was, "good luck!" They'll get eaten alive; they're playing with people who are quite serious.

All this "grand game" stuff with hiring people who are clearly marked politically and throwing a lot of $$$'s the Republican's way just sets them up when power changes hands. Very short sighted. Plus, they need to pay attention to the biz...this stuff's a distraction.

I'd like to see them get out of the politics, either side, and just do technology and systems.

We'll see how it turns out.

6. well, as far as free email goes...
I adore it.

Hotmail, yahoo, especially AOL, they all blow.
Gmail gives you unlimited space and the recognition software is sort of fun i think. I worked spring training baseball earlier this year and the ads were all for tickets and the like. Good stuff, fun to intentionally screw around with.

And, Raider Nation, nonetheless ;)
Too bad they refs are getting paid on the side. How do you pass interfere your own team?!?!

7. Yeah, I saw this a while ago...
and I never really understood why anyone needs a gig of free email anyway.

Some people tell me they like the idea of holding all their email online so they can dig through it while on the road, but if they got a laptop anyway, why bother?

Doesn't anybody have a decent ISP any more? Or can't they afford a reliable pay email service if email is so important to their lives?

Earthlink gives me 100 MB of email storage with the price of admission, with optional spam and virus filters free of charge, and they don't seem to have any deals with Heimat Sekuritat. I can check it from anywhere in the world or just download it with Eudora and wipe it from the servers. Eudora has search functions in it that whip through all my mailboxes to find anything I might want to know without looking for a wireless connection or a library. And, I've got a few gigs worth of mailboxes collected over the years-- a bit more mail than Google claims to hold. And no bullshit ads or tracking.

Change ISP's every couple of months? Get a pay email service or your own domain and just have your own personal domain email forwarded to whatever you change your ISP to next month. Or any combination thereof.

Gmail-- bleccchh.

10. I'm not sure if I "need" a gig of email space
but I sure do like having it. I also like having it available to access at anytime online, rather than having to d/l them first.

I don't like deleting my old mails and I don't really want to deal with an external client software. Though, I do have outlook (might consider a switch to Eudora).

Also, I'll admit it - I'm cheap. I don't feel like paying money for an extra ISP, especially when I'm already paying for broadband. I'm not sure what Comcast's email is like though. I might consider checking it out.

I don't understand the need to dismiss gmail if you don't use it. I do agree about privacy concerns, but if that's the issue, you should address that rather than insult those of us that use gmail or free email providers.

15. I wasn't aware I was insulting anyone...
although, OK, it could seem that way.

But, I'm not going to be too apologetic about it. There have always been a number of privacy and spam issues with the free accounts, and the simple truth is that there is nothing "free." I can't count ow many "free" deals out there have suddenly become pay deals or just disappeared.

I have couple of free accounts myself that I've set up for various reasons, and hardly ever use, but I can see their use. And, I do know a few people who have good use for them-- like some who don't happen to have home access, and get online at work or some other place.

But, truth is, most people I personally know who use the free accounts don't know much about other options or are somewhat paranoid about letting their "real" email addy out there.

And, yeah, some of us live by email for work, organizing, information, etc., but I suspect the vast majority of people don't really use it that seriously and anything they do works fine for them. I've suggested that people use the POP3 accounts they already have instead of webmail, and I often get blank stares.
