How many people in Gretna, LA
work in New Orleans?

How many people from Gretna go to New Orleans to eat, play, and shop?

I think the entrance and exit ramps between Gretna and New Orleans should be closed permanently. If the people of Gretna can't help their brothers in a time of dire need, then why should the people of New Orleans continue to help them?

2. I think about 18,000 +/-. We should ask Conyers to investigate the Gretna

police force and the Jefferson parish Sheriff, Lee, to determine if they should be held partially responsible for the deaths and suffering of so many of the people of New Orleans. It has been reported that they called black people "niggers" and shot at the fleeing people and sent them back to the hell of the convention center. Also, why was the UNDAMAGED 24 mile causeway across the lake to the city of Lacombe and St. Tammany Parish blocked off to all but emergency traffic? Is it because St.Tammany is mostly white?

4. The Gretna Police definitely needs to be investigated

This wasn't just an isolated incident. I have a report from one week later from the VT National Guard that talks about them going into a neighborhood to see if they could stir things up and kick some butt. Apparently there is small neighborhood where the 'bad' people live that they like to terrorize.

3. I want to know if the Gretna sheriff even had the authority to
close the bridge. Was this a state road, US highway?

5. Good question
Does anyone know if any of the civil rights groups or ACLU are looking into this problem?

6. Looks like it belongs to the state

The name of the two bridges is "Crescent City Connection"

http://www.dotd.state.la.us/operations/cccd/bridges.asp

The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) unit, providing the operation, maintenance and policing of the Crescent City Connection, was then designated as the "Crescent City Connection Division" of DOTD

7. Here's more evidence for anyone looking into this
This is a report from members of the National Guard that were there on Sept 8, one week after the police blockaded the bridge.

September 10, 2005

GRETNA, La. — Thursday night's mission for the Vermont National Guard members assisting the hurricane relief efforts highlighted the contrast in styles between the Vermont soldiers and local police and sheriffs.

By about 9 p.m., darkness had settled over the Guard's patrol areas and the third platoon was starting to settle into their checkpoints at the entrance to the Monterey Court neighborhood when a sheriff's cruiser and a pickup truck pulled up.

Two deputies were in the cruiser and another three or four were loaded into the truck.

The deputies asked the Guard how things were going. When the soldiers said it was boring, one deputy said "I guess we'll go make a run through there to see if we can stir some (stuff) up."

"They're going in in squad size. It looks like they're loading up," one Guardsman said as the deputies pulled forward about 50 yards to get ready to make their patrol
