8. Papers would read "Hurricane destroys Crawford, millions in improvement"
Crawford is almost 600 feet above sea level and a long way from the coast. If Crawford takes a bad hit, it will be Houston that garners attention.

10. I really wish people would stop saying this
The most that Crawford would likely get from a hurricane is a few stiff winds and some rain- it's too far inland to sustain major damage from a huricane. Worst case scenario is a renegade tornado from the storm, but even that so far inland would really be a freak occurrence.

In the meantime, the coastal areas of Texas which are mostly BLUE or at least purple are going to get hammered. And you only thought gas was expensive after Katrina- the area of Victoria, TX to Lake Charles, LA has tons of refineries and chemical plants, not to mention the offshore rigs.

As usual, Bush won't suffer, but the little people will.

16. We received 11 inches of rain in St. Louis one day from a tropical storm
Or so I read, as it happened in the late 1950's.

Not likely, but places farther from the coast then Crawford have been massively flooded in the past.

Winds would not be very damaging, but historically most hurricane deaths are from freshwater flooding.

18. We can get that in Texas from a non-tropical event
In 1994 Conroe, Texas received almost 24" in a 24 hour period. Last fall Beaumont, Texas received about 18" in 3 days and gets about 60" a year. So even the rain from this system would likely do very little damage, especially with how dry Texas has been lately. We actually *need* the rain from this storm, just not the damage.

19. We need a long, slow, steady rain
Not the massive downpour a hurricane will bring. That'll only cause massive runoffs and flash flooding. But, yes, you're right, we do need the rain. The only thing likely to happen to Crawford from Rita is a good soaking.

20. Amen!
I wish people would pull out a goddamn map. See Texas? It's that great big state sort of in the middle and down at the bottom of the US. See how biiiiig. That's not just our egos. It is a fucking big state. Crawford will get some rain. That is all. The people who get hurt will be the usual people who get hurt in hurricanes, the poor, the poorly housed, and those who live directly on the coast. The hurricane blows up one of the dry rivers, and everyone from Austin on south will suffer. Where's Crawford? North of Austin. Out by Waco. In Tornado Alley, not in vicinity of hurrican damage or post-hurrican flooding.

26. You are probably correct. Crawford will get some rain and nothing else.
But why discount inland flooding?

As much as I hate to use those FEMA c*cksuckers as a source:

The next time you hear hurricane -- think inland flooding!

Inland Flooding Backgrounder
Flooding Chart - See below for stats (Hurricane deaths)
Freshwater Flooding 59%; Wind 12%; Surf 11%; Offshore 11%; Tornado 4%; Other 2%; Surge 1%

While storm surge has been the number one cause of hurricane related deaths in the past, more people have died from inland flooding associated with tropical systems in the last 30 years. Since the 1970's, inland flooding has been responsible for more than half of all deaths associated with tropical cyclones in the United States. Flooding from hurricanes can occur hundreds of miles from the coast placing communities, which would not normally be affected by the strongest hurricane winds, in great danger.

Some of the greatest rainfall amounts associated with tropical systems occur from weaker Tropical Storms that have a slow forward speed (1 to 10mph) or stall over an area. Due to the amount of rainfall a Tropical Storm can produce, they are capable of causing as much damage as a category 2 hurricane.

FACTS ABOUT INLAND FLOODING FROM HURRICANES

* Freshwater floods accounted for more than half (59%) of U.S. tropical cyclone deaths over the past 30 years. These floods are why 63% of U.S. tropical cyclone deaths during that period occurred in inland counties.

* Over the past 30 years, 78% of children killed by tropical cyclones drowned in freshwater floods.

* One cubic yard of water weighs 1700lbs. The average automobile weighs 3400lbs. Many automobiles will float in just 2 feet of water.

* The average person can be swept off their feet in 6 inches of moving water.

* The average automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water.

* The average automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water. At least 23% of U.S. tropical cyclone deaths occur to people who drown in, or attempting to abandon, their cars.

* Rainfall is typically heavier with slower moving storms.

* Rainfall Rule of Thumb: to estimate the total amount of rainfall that can be expected from a tropical system, divide 100 by the forward speed of the storm in miles per hour. Example (100/Forward Speed = estimated inches of rain). Your local NWS forecast office will have a more accurate estimation method to predict rainfall.

we regularly get severe thunderstorms (in fact, one or two hit while Sheehan was around) and flood warnings.

25. Thank You!!!
My family is in the Beaumont/Pt Arthur area. My uncles work in the refineries and there are a lot of refineries down there. In the past they didn't shut down all the way, but kept a skeletal crew behind.

And Crawford won't be destroyed by the hurricane. Pleeeese, it'll be like a spring/early summer thunderstorm at it's worst.

13. HA!
Funny story:

Yesterday my friend asked a fellow Red Cross volunteer here in Houston, sort of rhetically, "hmm... Iraq, Katrina, now Rita? Do you think God decided that our president is in need of some spiritual help?"

The other woman looked her straight in the eye and replied, "SERIOUS spiritual help."

heh heh heh. I'm inclined to agree.

to "destroy the pig farm". She said that would only be fair, considering. (Okay, they've all heard me mention on numerous occasions that it's not a "ranch".)
