Dalia Lama in Tucson - Some Christians protest
Yea I was floored when I read this. I didn't get to see the man but I wish I had, but I found out too late about it.

I cannot believe some people actually had the audacity to protest his visit. If I had been there I would've said "You know you're here accusing this man of not knowing Jesus YOU do not know nor follow the teachings of Jesus of Nazereth, if you did instead of driving up here in your SUV's to spread hateful values, you'd have loaded your vehicles up with food to feed all the homeless people who live in the downtown area, why aren't you out doing that if you're so Christian? maybe if you actually listened to the things this man says about love and compassion, you'd see he is far closer to Jesus than any of you people are"

Not very Buddhist of me to say that, but still sometimes my demons just get the better of me.

By Carol Ann Alaimo
ARIZONA DAILY STAR

The Dalai Lama is not a stodgy man, and neither are his admirers, judging from the crowd that greeted the famed spiritual leader in Downtown Tucson on Monday.

Some wore glitter, feathers or flowing robes. Others lighted incense and struck yoga poses on the lawn of the Tucson Convention Center.

About 7,500 fans, from Tucson and elsewhere, converged on the city center to see the 70-year-old Buddhist monk in his only appearance before the general public during his four-day stay.

"This calls for a celebration," said Marta Macbeth, 50, of Santa Fe, N.M., who twined lime-green parrot feathers into her waist-long silver hair for the event. "I just get really happy when His Holiness is around."

Erin Midkiff, 17, a senior at Tucson High Magnet School, donned a black T-shirt featuring stars, planets and gold glitter.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Midkiff, one of hundreds of students who got free tickets. "I've always been really interested in Buddhism, and it's pretty amazing to see the top leader."

1. Who was it on DU who said
something like "He's corrupting our children with ideas of peace!"?

I'm a christian myself but I don't see the reason for their outburst, other than the fact that his philosophy is generally contrary to the Bush agenda.

2. Do those Christians know that he interpreted the New Testament
Because the Dalai Lama was interested in the teaching of Jesus and a Christian community asked him to comment about the New Testament and he made a whole lecture (which is available as a book) where he talks about and interprets the New Testament.

3. Yep, this makes no sense
" A handful of Christian protesters held up signs declaring that His Holiness is a sinner who needs Jesus."

Why exactly is he a sinner? Just because he is not "born-again"? If that is the case I will stand with the DL, since being Catholic I expect those few protesters will have the same problem with me.

7. Their next stop of protest was probably St. Augustine the cathedral
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 05:56 PM by noahmijo
that is about one block east of where the DL was.

See you're a Catholic so to these people you're a heretic. ;) That's what they used to call me anyway these types back when I wore the crucifix around my neck. Although I consider myself more Buddhist nowadays I still have a special place in me for the good Catholics out there.

4. if only his teachings were followed
If Dalai Lama's teachings of peace to all beings were only followed, what a better world we would have, but of course less opportunity for the greedy warmongers

5. A man who preaches peace and love is protested by....
Christians as a "sinner who needs Jesus". These people are just plain stupid and crazy. I sometimes think they would even protest Jesus himself.

8. I always say that if Jesus were alive today they'd order Bush to crucify
him. On charges that he hates America.

6. that would be like protesting the POPE
whether you agree with his brand of religion or not! geesh - what is WRONG with these people?

They should really question their own religion when all they feel is hatred and disdain.

I would much rather meet the Dalai Lama than the Pope, myself.

11. The Dalai Lama is the only spiritual leader
I would address as "Your Holiness" under any circumstances. He has earned it.

I tend to think he espouses much more of "true Christian values" than the current Pope does!

9. All of our totems must be diminished. All leaders who do not speak
"kool-aid".

The hate that this President has unleached. Shame on him.

Dali Lama,is he understands why people protest and it won't bother or deter him in the least. He is truly at peace with himself and his environment.Truly a great man!
