Lindbergh Field given FAA award for runway safety
Lindbergh Field given FAA award for runway safety

The San Diego International Airport (SDIA) became one of only two airports in the Western Pacific region to be recognized by the FAA for runway safety after having no runway incursions during 2004, the airport authority said Monday.

This award acknowledges that the airport authority is providing the highest standards of operational efficiency, safety and security, said Thella F. Bowens, president and CEO of the airport authority, in a statement. The airport authoritys airside operations department continues to ensure that SDIA meets or exceeds all of the FAAs certification and safety requirements.

The FAA identified runway incursions defined as an aircraft either taking off or landing on the runway when it is occupied by another aircraft or equipment as an on-going aviation-safety issue. The safety team completed a comprehensive evaluation of airfield operations at each of the 82 control tower-operated airports within the Western Pacific region as part of a program to reduce runway incursions and surface incidents.

Lindbergh Field is the nations busiest single-runway commercial service airport, serving 16.4 million passengers in 2004, according to the airport authority.
