Help Frances Newton
Just passing on an e-mail:

Please Help Frances Newton's Family with Funeral Expenses

Dear ....

As you know by now, Frances Newton was executed on Sept 14. Family and friends of Frances gathered today, Sept 20, in Houston for her funeral. Please take a moment out of your day to think of them.

We received a note from Gloria Rubac of the Committee to Free Frances Newton saying that Frances' family is having trouble paying for the funeral, the plot, and the burial. As anyone who has had to arrange a funeral for one of their loved ones knows, funerals are quite expensive.

Gloria said that Jewel Nelms, Frances' mother, was very hesitant to even ask for contributions as she is such an independent and proud woman, but she said if someone really insisted on doing something, that a contribution would be more helpful than flowers.

To send a contribution to help the family with funeral expenses, mail it to:

Jewel Nelms
13875 Ella Blvd., Apt. 1105
Houston, TX 77014

If it is more convenient for you to contribute online, you can contribute through our Paypal account and we will forward the contribution to Jewel Nelms.

Thank you to the Committee to Free Frances Newton for the amazing amount of work they did on Frances' behalf.

Sincerely,

Your friends at Texas Moratorium Network

If you are still angry with the governor and Board of Pardons and Paroles because they did not stop the execution of Frances Newton, you can let them know by sending them an email.
Even though we failed to stop the execution of Frances Newton, we are making progress with public opinion and with the opinions of some policymakers that Texas needs a moratorium on executions. Next year's gubernatorial election will go a long way in determining whether Texas has a moratorium in the near future. The Texas Democratic Party has endorsed a moratorium and independent candidate Kinky Friedman has signed our moratorium petition. Click here to see Kinky's signature on the petition. If a Democrat wins or if Kinky wins, our chances of having a moratorium greatly improve.

Please register to attend the 2005 Annual Conference of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, which is being held in Austin Oct 27-29. There will be lots of workshops where you can learn valuable skills to help stop future executions. The 6th Annual March to Stop Executions will also be held as part of the conference on Saturday, October 29. The march will end with a rally at the Texas Governor's mansion.

Click here to register for the conference. Remember, a big reason why the conference is coming to Austin is because people on this email list wrote them and asked for the conference to come to Austin. Our goal now is to have more people attend the NCADP conference in Austin than have ever attended one before. So register today.

Texas Students Against the Death Penalty has been given 10 scholarships by NCADP to pay the conference registration fee for ten students. If you would like to apply for one of the ten scholarships, please email Hooman Hedayati at hooman@texasabolition.org with a brief statement on why you should be given one of the scholarships. They are looking for students who want to start anti- death penalty organizations on Texas campuses, so if you want to start such a group or already have started one, your chances will probably increase for receiving one of the scholarships.
