Holy CRAP. Alan Alda is the SHIT.
I always knew it, but was never able to prove it.

Now we have proof.

That was such an unbelievably smooth and hilarious interview.

Alda himself could have been conducting it.

What a great man.

Isn't it easier to ask for more info than to insult someone?

I've read some of your threads and I tend to like you. But I like BGL, and in this case I believe that you are wrong & rude.

To me, it seems rude to call someone "THE SHIT!" and claim it to be a compliment.

Perhaps I am unaware of a secret, hitherto unknown meaning of "SHIT" ?

Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 10:59 PM by BullGooseLoony
I suppose I could have said that he was "badass."

But, as far as diction seemed appropriate, "the SHIT" was much stronger and conveyed my newfound feelings for Alan Alda much more accurately.

I suppose you're all flunking colloquial English now, as well?

Maybe in the sense of "unacceptably informal". But everyone I know would take that as an insult. Many people still have not adjusted to the New Orwellianism, where bad words are used for good meanings.

I'm telling you that what I said, and what I meant, is that Alan Alda is THE SHIT. End of sentence.

As far as the current pronunciation of the term that you have brought up, may I refer you to the fourth track on the album here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005AQF7/103-7029198-6717455?v=glance

And that was back in the early 90's. Time to get caught up- brotha.

52. Too much nuance?
Look, the person I was responding to could have more politely asked for more info. I am not perfect as there are a few threads that I responded to someone in a less than respectful way. On whole, I regret the disrespectful responses that I have made, for they reflect negatively on me, and also because I wish to be a better person.

As for referring to someone as being "the shit", it is well understood that that phrase was meant as a compliment. Intention, for me, is bottom line in judging whether or not a person was saying something positive or negative about me or mine. Sorry, no examples come to mind, but we have all been around long enough to know that someone could say "nice words" that in context are a knife in the back.

Give me good intentions any day. I have long said that two people could say the exact same thing about me, but a person with evil intention would mean it for harm, a person who loves me can get away with it because they mean it for good. I always judge intention.

BGL meant a compliment, so why do you take offense?

In case you haven't noticed, the choice of words is important to most people. I've had too much experience with crowds that use words in Orwellian ways, telling me that no, their meanings are different from what I had always known them to be, only to find out later that my original instincts were right. Fuck that shit. If you want to make a compliment, use words that are designed for that purpose. If you use derogatory words to make "compliments", then you shouldn't be surprised to find that people don't think of them as real compliments.

If "people" cannot understand the context in which they live, then there are no correct words to speak to them.

If you have a bee in your bonnet tonight, well we all occasionally suffer from that. We all have been under extreme stress. I sincerely hope that is all that is wrong with you.

in our world had better have known that Alan Alda was on the Daily Show tonight well before it aired in the area.

It was all over DU tonight. The Daily Show is a STAPLE of DU culture.

Don't know? Don't like it? Not my fucking problem. YOU'RE the one doesn't know. Don't act like I have to make up for it for everyone else.

It's YOUR responsibility to know what the hell is going on. It's not my responsibility to tell you.

Considering your behavior in this thread that brings you up to a proud single unit of credit.

Cryptic OPs are a much bigger "nuisance" at DU than a less than 100% awareness of The Daily Show guests every night.

a halfway decent understanding of the current events surrounding DU culture.

Are you telling me people didn't know that the Daily Show was on tonight, and that there was going to be a guest?

Is this not something that just about everybody here gets involved with?

Those who post here who DON'T follow the Daily Show fairly closely don't even have informed or respectable opinions.

I'm sorry, but if you don't know shit, you DON'T KNOW SHIT.

When people are ignorant, that's their problem. It was all over DU, and all over the TV.

I will go ahead and do all a favor, though: George W. Bush (a.k.a. - that's "also known as"- the "Chimp") is the President of the United States right now.

There. I've done my civic duty, and hopefully every single DUer will now know what they should know.

89. Some of us don't live where The Daily Show is aired.
It isn't on television all over the world.

Of course, most of us who can't get The Daily Show and other shows that are mentioned on DU tend to try to figure out from various posts what happened, and refrain from comment on things we just don't get televised in other parts of the world.

It is nice when people here can link to what they're referring to, and particularly helpful if there is a video clip, but heck, sometimes that's just not possible. In that case, it's just best to ignore the thread altogether and try to participate in the ones that pertain to things we are able to access.

98. Some of us have very tight budgets
and refuse to spend money on cable TV which is a whole lotta nothing mostly. In our budget, it was either cable or DSL and we opted for DSL so we could both be on the computer at the same time, getting as much news as possible. I enjoy watching the Daily Show clips that get posted here, but I'm hardly going to waste the money every month just for one or two shows.

I didn't understand your thread title to be a compliment, either until I read through the thread. Sorry, I'm a middle aged women from the midwest. :D

19. He is the new President of the United States
replacing Martin Sheen on "The West Wing" - playing a Republican, but a Republican with a conscience (remember, it's fiction).

27. Without cable I only get Bravo for some reason..
I'm behind on the wing but last night it was the point where Jimmy Smits comes out of the brokered convention ahead ( the networks dream )I figured Alan Alda was just on for a year playing a skunk pretending he had a concience. Man he's good. Does the rest of the staff stay on?

Unless you are a writer for the West Wing show????? He is playing the role of a Rep. "running for office against JIMMY SMITS a Dem" I don't know why but my ESP isn't working tonight. Maybe I already missed the election?? But the new season hasn't started yet, so how can that be???? My money is on JIMMY SMITS to take over as Pres. in place of Martin Sheen!! :banghead: ON edit...... Guess I missed the first show ? Was it on last night? I had news on all night!

56. Season premiers on Sept. 25
And the election hasn't been held yet.

But there was STRONG inference from tonight's Daily Show that he was going to be taking over the Martin Sheen role ... and, if you think about it, Smits does NOT have the bona fides to take over Sheen's role.

74. Personally, I think it's over after this season anyway
I mean, unless the ratings go through the roof, I don't see them being able to carry the show with an entirely new cast.

As you said above, Alan Alda fits the bill for the role and Jimmy Smits doesn't. At the same time, if Santos becomes President, then we keep Josh, Leo, etc.

Personally, I don't think that either scenario is plausible and that they're just going to bring it to an end.

If I had my way, the show would end with the inauguration of President Sam Seaborn.

92. Alan Alda's already been the US President....

in
Canadian Bacon
(written & directed by Michael Moore btw)
also starring the late great John Candy.
Brilliant satire.
The U.S. President (played by Alda), low in the opinion polls, gets talked into raising his popularity by trying to start a cold war against Canada.

Yes, Alda was (as always) smooth & hilarious. :loveya:

54. I'm an Alda fan too
In the last READER's DIGEST they had articles by both him and his wife. She's writing children's books, and he's got an autobiography out.

Did anyone else ever see a movie he did with Ann-Margret and Hal Linden called "A New Life"? It tanked at the box office, but I liked it. It's about a newly-divorced couple and their attempts to adjust to single life and then new relationships with younger partners.

It was really cool to read about him being on stage again and about the new book!

I've loved him since MASH - I had one of my first crushes on Hawkeye. I hadn't seen him in "A New Life" though... I'll have to add it to my list of rentals! :)

102. This is silly....
yes I like the Daily Show. I even bought the book.

But I do not have cable. Nor do I even have an antenna. My TV is used on the rare occasion for DVD's. So some of us do not automatically KNOW whats going on a CABLE show. And there is no reason to look down on people because WE'VE been able to make the jump to life without a propaganda box. And that was the exact impression the OP's responses gave me. "You don't watch the Daily Show? You weren't watching it RIGHT NOW, JUST THEN, AT THIS VERY MOMENT? What in the hell is wrong with you? If you want to be a part of the cool club at DU, you must watch this show every night. Therefore you don't get to join in on the conversation. Any such requests for background will be thoroughly flamed!"

The first few replies could of been worded so as not to put the OP on the defensive. But SHEESH! Most of the COOL CROWD would've given some sort of transcript, dialog, link, or simply an amusing anecdote.

So the Bronco's game on Sunday was awesome. You obviously ALL know what I'm talking about. Bronco games are what EVERYBODY knows about here. So there is no need for any background.

See what I'm sayin'? Don't want to sound like the a-hole manager at the fast food place I worked when I was a teenager that used to say, "You got time to lean...you got time to clean."....BUT....don't "assume"...it makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me".

106. No, no- any rude, demanding, or sarcastic posts "requesting"
background will be met with similar disdain and hostility.

If people want info, they can either read all of the other threads talking about the Daily Show, or they can ASK NICELY.

AND- you have NO excuse for not being informed. We talk about things going on the mainstream media, here- ESPECIALLY THE DAILY SHOW. EVERY NIGHT THAT IT'S ON. There are about FIVE THREADS HERE ON THE DAILY SHOW EVERY NIGHT THAT IT AIRS. Shit, it sucks to not know what's going on, but that's the way it works when you deliberately cut yourself off from the outside world. Read those threads if you want to know what's going on.

Just count on the fact that at about 10PM Central, Monday through Thursday, there are going to be a number of Daily Show threads.

I, in concert production. Just got home after 7 straight days of 16+ hours a day.

Again, don't assume. You make a....well nevermind. It's obvious that you're just going to assume anyway.

And obviously it makes you quite hostile to think that someone would request a little background in a thread about something that requires a little background.

All right. Flames back in your court. Hit me with some vitrol.
